[h=1]Super Mario Odyssey unlocks a ton of bonuses after you beat the game[/h]
[h=2]Oh, you thought you were done once credits roll? Not so fast[/h]

Most of the world is just starting to get its hands on Super Mario Odyssey, and as you dig in, you might be wondering why you’re having trouble getting every moon in a kingdom or just how deep the rabbit hole of this game goes. Lucky for you, we’ve been playing for a week straight now, so we can fill in some of the details.
Spoiler warning: While this post will not discuss any specific plot or gameplay sequences, it does spoil some of the rewards you get for “finishing” the game. If you want to be surprised, read no further.
For anyone who’s played recent Mario titles like Super Mario 3D World or even going back to the Mario Galaxy games, it’s no surprise that there are more challenges waiting after the credits roll. Here’s what Super Mario Odyssey has in store for dedicated players.
Super Mario Odyssey Nintendo[h=3]TONS MORE MOONS[/h]If you’re journeying through some of Super Mario Odyssey’s kingdoms and ever think to yourself, “Wow, the list of moons in this kingdom is surprisingly short,” I have good news. By beating Bowser and finishing the game, you unlock the ability to stuff every single kingdom full of even more moons.
In each kingdom, you’ll find a strange metallic box that Cappy will comment on but you can’t seem to actually interact with. After credits roll, return to that box and you’ll now be able to toss your hat at it, sending it rocketing into the sky, where it bursts open and fills the surrounding level with new moons.
RELATED
[h=4]Super Mario Odyssey review[/h]

You’ll need to locate each individual box in each kingdom, but they add a lot of moons — in some cases, even doubling the total number available in a kingdom. Many of these new moons are also extremely challenging.
[h=3]A NOSTALGIC NEW KINGDOM[/h]Once you’ve rescued Princess Peach, you get the chance to go visit her in the Mushroom Kingdom. This throwback world is reminiscent of the Peach’s Castle area in Super Mario 64, including the ability to jump into paintings (for extra-hard boss battles) and at least one room that is directly taken from that N64 classic.
Best of all, the Mushroom Kingdom has dozens of new moons to collect, including moons that are offered up for completing statistical milestones. We spent several hours scouring this kingdom and still have more to do, so expect to keep busy.
Nintendo
[h=3]SCATTERED NPCS[/h]One strange thing you might notice on your trip to the Mushroom Kingdom: Princess Peach isn’t actually there. That’s because she’s decided to go on her own roadtrip with her hat companion, Tiara. As you return to older kingdoms to clean up old moons and bust open boxes of new ones, you’ll also be able to find Princess Peach, retrieve a moon from her in each area and follow along on her journey.
Besides Peach, other denizens of Super Mario Odyssey will pop up in different zones than usual. With peace returned to the world, it seems that tourism has picked up. Many of the traveling NPCs are just there for flavor — like a fish person from the Lake Kingdom who you can discover happily bathing under a waterfall in the Woodlands Kingdom — but others will present you with new missions that reward (duh) even more moons.
[h=3]EVEN MORE NEW ZONES[/h]The Mushroom Kingdom isn’t the only new area you can unlock after the credits. As you gather even more moons, you can power up the Odyssey — the ship Mario uses to travel between kingdoms — further to reach even greater heights.
By gathering a total of 250 moons, you’ll open up the ability to reach The Dark Side of the Moon, a smallish area that features a really tough boss rush challenge. To complete this, you’ll need to defeat all four of the game’s main rabbit bosses, plus their final mech form, on one life and with no checkpoints.
It took us a ... a while. Pro-tip: Go to a different kingdom first, enter a store and purchase an extra heart before returning to the Dark Side. This will help a lot. Once you manage to survive the boss rush, you’ll unlock other challenges on the Dark Side.
That’s not all, though! By gathering a total of 500 moons, you’ll be able to travel to the Darker Side. Yes, seriously. While the previous level had a boss rush challenge with no checkpoints, the Darker Side features one of the most intense, demanding and lengthy platforming sequences in the game ... with no checkpoints. Godspeed!
There also might be an even harder final challenge waiting for players who manage to collect every one of the game’s 800-plus moons, but we’re honestly still chipping away at it, so we’re not sure yet.
[h=3]OUTFIT EXTRAVAGANZA[/h]Not everything you unlock for beating Super Mario Odyssey is about challenge. By finishing the game, you’ll also earn the option to purchase lots of new hat and suit combos for Mario. Many of these are unlockable via amiibo use as well (such as the swanky wedding outfits), but if you don’t want to shell out real money for figures, you can just pay in-game gold coins. More of these will unlock for purchase as you gather moons.
Whether you’re looking to play at fashion or to prove your skill at platforming, Super Mario Odyssey has a ton for dedicated players to achieve, even long after Bowser is busted. If you need help along the way, be sure to check out our Super Mario Odyssey guide, which we’ll be building on throughout the weekend and into the weeks ahead.

[h=1]Super Mario Odyssey lets you cosplay as the best villain[/h]

[h=2]Bless these unlockable costumes[/h]

Super Mario Odyssey has a whole bunch of costumes to unlock, and yes, they are fantastic. As we discovered during our six-hour stream of the Switch game, these costumes run the gamut from classic, to stylish and to ... evil.
By evil, I mean extremely good. If you’re anxious about “spoilers,” here’s your warning.
We had amiibo on hand, so we were able to quickly run by Uncle Amiibo to grab costumes based on favorite Super Mario characters. (You don’t have to have the amiibo to unlock the costumes, mind you, which is a nice touch.) For whatever reason, the basic Yoshi, Bowser and Peach amiibo didn’t quite work ... but good ol’ Wario did.
And you know who else grants Mario a special outfit? Waluigi. Check out the GIF below to see just how excited we were to discover this.

Mario has dressed up as Waluigi before, back in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Doorfor Nintendo GameCube. But this is the most high-profile and mainstream Mario game to give Waluigi a chance to assume a starring role; he’s one of the only characters in the main crew to never have his very own game. Of course, it’s really just a re-skinned Mario, but that doesn’t dissuade us from calling this cosplay Waluigi’s first, big-time starring role.
Here’s a nice, crisp screenshot for you, featuring Russ and me. NintendoThis isn’t quite the “Super Waluigi Odyssey” we continue to hope for, but we’ll definitely take what we can get. That goes for the rest of Super Mario Odyssey, too — which features many, many, many more very good, very reference-heavy costumes to put on Mario.

[h=1]Nintendo is fighting itself for best-reviewed game of the year[/h]
[h=2]The only person that can take down Zelda is Mario[/h]

Nintendo is in the unique and rather enviable position of fighting itself for the best-reviewed game of the year. Super Mario Odyssey is out in the wild, and the reviews have been uniformly positive. It’s biggest rival in terms of positive coverage? Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
Here are the top five best-reviewed games for 2017 to date, according to Metacritic:

  1. Super Mario Odyssey with a 97
  2. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on the Switch with a 97
  3. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on the Wii U with a 96
  4. Divinity: Original Sin 2 with a 93
  5. Persona 5 with a 93
The review scores for Odyssey look pretty impressive when you line them all up.
Nibel via Twitter NibelNintendo is on a bit of a hot streak this year with the Switch continuing to sell out, a new Zelda title, a new Mario title, a new Metroid title, the sequel to Splatoon, the SNES Classic selling out instantly and ... well, amiibo are still a thing I guess.
Watching the game of the year awards is going to be interesting this year, with so many outlets raining love on Nintendo’s offerings. Nintendo is often conservative with its releases, trying to make sure there’s always that one game you’re looking forward to getting next, but 2017 was absolutely stacked with great games and hardware from the gaming giant.
When Nintendo comes out swinging, it comes out swinging.

I shipped mine to an incorrect address but was fortunate enough to get it corrected in time. Will hopefully be getting my copy somewhere around 2 Nov. Also got the free cappy coin that alone is worth 50 bucks - thanks to BestBuy's pre order bonus.

So I've been playing this...on world 3. The level design is just so so good and the mechanics are extremely fluid, as are the animations. Nintendo is by far the king of platformers.

[h=1]Super Mario Odyssey has hidden rewards for players who ‘break’ the game[/h]

[h=2]Ready to get creative?[/h]

Super Mario Odyssey is one of the best-games of the year, and the sense of wonder and exploration that Nintendo packed into each of the levels is a big reason why it’s so enjoyable to play. Each area is absolutely packed with secrets, easter eggs and hidden paths.
But you can go even further.
The game’s jumping mechanics can be exploited in a number of ways if you want to get to places that seem to be off-limits in the course of the regular game. It’s the sort of thing that speedrunners live for and can lead to shortcuts through the levels, but players are discovering that Nintendo knew about many of these areas and placed piles of coins in many of them as a reward for your creativity.

Finding clever ways to break levels in #SuperMarioOdyssey is not only possible, but rewarded. One of the reasons this game rules.

You can watch a video of another hidden area at the top of this post.
This sort of thing shows the steady, confident hand Nintendo brings to its first-party games. It wouldn’t have been fair to hide moons up there — only the best players are going to be able to figure out how to string together these jumps — but leaving these sections empty would also be a wasted opportunity.
The piles of coins are a nice way for Nintendo to tell players that it sees them, and knew these techniques existed, without breaking the game’s difficulty.

[h=1]Super Mario Odyssey sold 2 million copies already, says Nintendo[/h]

[h=2]SNES Classic has also sold 2 million since launch[/h]

Super Mario Odysseylaunched only four days ago and already it has sold two million copies, Nintendo told investors in a presentation following a robust quarterly earnings report.
It was one of many highlights in this slide deck presented by Tatsumi Kimishima, Nintendo’s president. Kimishima said that the SNES Classic Edition, which launched Sept. 29, has also sold 2 million units.
And Super Mario Run, the mobile title that premiered last December, has hit the 200 million download mark — though Kimishima did not brand it a success. He said Nintendo has “not yet reached an acceptable profit point,” with the game, but “we have learned a lot in terms of game development and deployment,” on mobile platforms.
For the classic line of consoles, Kimishima said that Nintendo is banking on the SNES Classic as a low-cost entry product to drive lapsed gamers, or those who have never played, to the Nintendo Switch. He reaffirmed that production on the NES Classic Edition, which quickly sold out in 2016 and was abruptly canceled months later, will restart in 2018.
The presentation closed with a note about the oncoming holiday season and Nintendo’s preparedness to meet demand for the Switch during it. Earlier, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said supply-chain concerns had led to shortages of the Switch since its launch in March.
“The ongoing lack of Nintendo Switch hardware on shelves in domestic and overseas markets means that our consumers, eager to play the software that has already been released, are not yet fully able to acquire the hardware,” Kimishima said. “We are working to ensure that these consumers are able to get hardware, moving forward.”

[h=1]Super Mario Odyssey is the fastest-selling Mario game in the U.S.[/h]
[h=2]So that worked out pretty well[/h]

Nintendo already announced that Super Mario Odyssey has sold two million copies thus far, but the company has now revealed that 1.1 million of those units have sold just in the United States. That makes Odyssey the fastest selling Mario game ever in the U.S., as well as the fast selling Switch game since the system’s launch.
The company also publicized something we’ve pointed out in the past: It’s only competing with itself for the best-reviewed game of the year as well.
“On Metacritic.com, which aggregates scores from certain reviewers, for example, the game currently has a critical review average of 97, with 43 perfect scores,” Nintendo stated in a press release. “This makes Super Mario Odyssey the best-reviewed game on Metacritic for any system of the last three years, tied only with Nintendo Switch launch game The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.”
Nintendo isn’t being shy about celebrating the game’s success, tweeting this image earlier today:

While sales of Super Mario Odyssey were likely held back at least a bit by the limited supply of the Switch itself, they are likely to grow as more hardware makes it onto store shelves and the holiday shopping season begins.
“Nintendo has increased supplies of Nintendo Switch to meet demand through the holidays,” the company said. “The total number of Nintendo Switch systems sold in the United States through the end of October now stands at more than 2.6 million.”

I prefer playing it on TV. Actually the game is designed in a way that its preferable to play it without the sticking the joy cons in the stock controller case. There are movements that are somewhat mandatory that can only be done with separate joycons in your hand. The game really rewards you for looking into every nook and corner of the map, in the second kingdom i found around 30 moons and i thought i must have cleaned the whole map only to find out that there are actually 50 moons in total for that map lol.

Nintendo has always been spot on with their platformers and Mario's level design has always been awesome but Odyssey really takes that design philosophy on another level. My impression of the game ofcourse comes from the starting 2 levels and judging by that I think this is by far the best level design in a mario game.

Some more screens + Videos from Odyssey. Not sure how many levels are there in total but I think I have spent around 15 hours on the first 5 levels alone. Again, the map design in Odyssey is freaking fantabulous. I just hope Nintendo brings in the trophies/ achievements sorta thing to its platform as well. Its just mind boggling that they have nothing of this sort atm.

Spoiler: show
