Super Mario Odyssey

Mario’s next adventure looks incredibly wild and inventive — even by Nintendo standards. Today the company showed off the latest trailer for Super Mario Odyssey, which follows in the sandbox footsteps of the genre-defining Super Mario 64, revealing an experience that looks to be absolutely crammed with ideas and potential.

One of the core components of the game is Mario’s hat, which has been turned into a sentient character named Cappy, who can be tossed onto characters, enemies, objects, and vehicles, transforming Mario in the process. The trailer shows everything from a Mario T-Rex to a Mario tank to a Mario Bullet Bill. The levels themselves, meanwhile — which range from urban cityscapes to typical desert and ice worlds — look to be very dense with things to discover and interact with. At one point in the trailer, the game even shifts to an old-school, side-scrolling Mario experience.

Super Mario Odyssey will be the biggest Switch game since The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild at launch, and it’s coming later this year — Nintendo revealed today that Odyssey will be available on October 27th.

[h=1]Mario possesses man, a frog, a dinosaur and more in Super Mario Odyssey[/h]

[h=2]Here’s all the great transformations — and costumes![/h]

We’ll be blunt: Super Mario Odyssey looks amazing. The coolest new gameplay feature we saw in the game’s first full trailer may be Mario’s special hat ability. Cappy, his sentient hat, has the power to possess virtually anything in the world.

Yep. Super Mario Odyssey’s coolest mechanic is possession. If Mario flings Cappy at certain people or things, he “captures” them and absorbs their powers. It ... sounds weird, sure — but it looks awesome. Check out a bunch of the creatures and beings whose bodies Mario inhabited during our first peek at the game.
Mario can become a huge T. Rex with a very tiny Mario hat and ‘stache. Nintendo
Mario doesn’t just stomp on Goombas’ heads anymore. Now he can become their leader.
Another enemy Mario can capture is a Bullet Bill. Rad.
Mario the Friendly Ghost Hat.
Mario makes for a nice rocket ship, honestly.
Mario becomes a Koopa Troopa, and it’s ... it’s something.
We have mixed feelings about Statue Mario. Nintendo
Mario! Becomes! A! Cab!
Mario as a little baby Cheep-Cheep.
Mario as a tank is everything. EVERYTHING.
Mario as a Chain-Chomp! Cool. Nintendo
Mario becomes a viewfinder ... that can jettison into the air. Because that’s how those work.
We want to kiss this Frog Mario straight on the lips.
Mario finally can experience the horrors of being a human man with normal proportions.
Mario can also get different hats that change up his outfit. Here’s his jazzy sombrero-poncho combo.
We won’t shame Mario for wearing a floaty.
American football: The one sport Mario has yet to conquer.
We’d kill for a Mario version of Overcooked or Cooking Mama. Rewatch the new Super Mario Odyssey trailer below to see all of these in action. That’s what we’ll be doing for the rest of forever ... until Oct. 27, anyway, when the game launches on Nintendo Switch.

[h=1]Super Mario Odyssey will feature co-op[/h]

[h=2]The second player controls Cappy[/h]

During the third day of E3 live streams, the team at Nintendo confirmed that Super Mario Odyssey will feature local co-op.

When the feature was demoed during Nintendo’s Treehouse stream, game director Kenta Motokura said he was inspired to add this feature in the game because the Nintendo Switchnatively features two controllers out of the box.
Co-op mode in Super Mario Odyssey Nintendo In this two player mode, you’ll notice that Mario’s hat, Cappy, floats above his head when this mode is active. When co-op mode is being used, a prompt appears on screen explaining the different commands between Mario and Cappy.
Mario still maintains his traditional running and jumping moves, as well as controlling the camera, but he no longer controls Cappy — although they did tease that he could still control Cappy somehow, but it was not shown on the stream. Players controlling Cappy can fly around and perform attacks, as well as control the camera.

During the live demo, Nintendo showed off how instrumental Cappy can be in performing fast actions that Mario can’t do, for instance, grabbing scattered music notes that quickly disappear to solve a puzzle.
Nintendo
Cappy is also invincible, so playing as him is perfect for players who want a stress-free play session without the fear of getting hurt. Nintendo added a few puzzles that are helped by the teamwork, such as situations where Mario needs to hold an item but needs Cappy to do something.
Super Mario Odyssey will be available on Oct. 27, 2017 on Nintendo Switch

As expected Mario Odyssey looks set for another hit. I love quality platforming games but sadly I think only Japs are the ones brilliant at this stuff and most of them end up being on Nintendo only. The only other platforming game that i have loved and is not a part of Nintendo ecosystem is Puppeteer back on the PS3. Such an underrated game it is and that too came out from SCE JAPAN.

Nintendo would like you to know that Mario doesn’t ‘possess’ things in Super Mario Odyssey

Someone found their thesaurus

You know how everyone spent all of E3 last week going gaga over
Super Mario Odyssey and the myriad people, creatures and objects that Mario can quote-unquote possess in the game? Well, actually, Nintendo has a slight but firm note for everyone.

Mario’s classic red cap is sentient in Super Mario Odyssey, with eyes and everything. The Italian plumber can toss his hat at all kinds of things in New Donk City (and elsewhere) in order to transport his soul, the very essence of his being, into them. At that point, Mario will be able to control the noun in question, which will indicate its possessed nature by sporting a red cap on top and a thick, curved mustache on its face.
If you think this sounds a bit like the special ability of another popular Nintendo character, you’re not alone. Sam Logan, the artist behind the
Sam and Fuzzy webcomic, posted a cheeky illustration on Monday to clarify the difference between a Kirby that has “eaten” Mario — and would therefore be able to copy the plumber’s abilities — and a Kirby that has been “possessed” by Mario:

As you can see, the tweet (and Logan’s corresponding
Tumblr post) went viral. But Nintendo pushed up its glasses and issued a correction, saying, “Um, actually he’s been ‘Captured’ by Mario.”

This might be the sassiest tweet we’ve ever seen from Nintendo. But “captured” is, of course, a play on Cappy, the name of Mario’s possession-obsessed headgear — which is acap — and “capturing” is actually the name of the mechanic in the game.

[h=1]Super Mario Odyssey ditches the ‘game over’ screen completely[/h]

[h=2]It’s game over for game over[/h]

Players will never have to worry about hitting “game over” in Super Mario Odyssey. While Mario can die in myriad ways throughout the game, he’ll never make the player sit through one of the iconic end screens.

A recent post from the game’s Japanese Twitter account confirms that Super MarioOdyssey has no game over screens. A rough translation of the tweet explains the game’s health mechanic, which sees Mario losing 10 coins every time he “plunges to the depths.” Coins replace the traditional lives system of other Mario games.
“No matter how many times he fails, there is no Game Over,” the tweet continues. A follow-up messages adds that even if Mario has less than 10 coins in his possession, the player can still keep going without worrying about a complete game over.
“We also wanted people to be able to, you know, you get into a kingdom and you can just kind of continually keep going through that kingdom without being pulled out, so that was why we kind of wanted to get rid of the lives idea,” Yoshiaki Koizumi, the game’s producer, told Polygon at E3 of the decision to do away with lives and 1-Ups — and, apparently, game overs.

In our time with Super Mario Odyssey, we found that amassing coins wasn’t difficult; they’re all over the various kingdoms Mario travels through. There’s also the usual checkpoint system, so that anytime Mario does kick the bucket, he’ll just pick up from the last flagpole he hit up.
It’s a little bit sad to see the iconic game over go by the wayside. A recent video explored the evolution of Mario’s deaths and game-ending actions over the past 30 years, ending with Super Mario Odyssey’s much less anxiety-inducing death screen.

But maybe the lack of game over will be good — since we want to spend as much time as possible running around this sandbox adventure game. Super Mario Odyssey launches Oct. 27, only on Nintendo Switch.

[h=1]Super Mario Odyssey capture abilities keep getting weirder[/h]

[h=2]That time Mario became a giant piece of meat[/h]

Super Mario Odyssey‘s magical hat Cappy is still a mystery. Is he a ghost that possesses hats? Some kind of alien that transforms on a whim? A hallucination brought on Mario’s PTSD from losing his trusty red cap?
While we probably won’t get a full answer until the game’s release, Polygon did get to see some of Cappy’s origin story at a recent Nintendo preview event. (You can see some of our experiences in the gameplay video, above.) Super Mario Odyssey’s early game takes place in the Cap Kingdom, Cappy’s home country.
We were treated to a cut scene of Mario in the spooky, monochrome world, with a landscape dominated by a looming, ivory tower sporting a black top hat. It’s in this kingdom that Cappy and Mario team up, and Mario gets to see firsthand what it’s like to capture another creature. Without spoiling the moment, Mario’s first capture has a surreal quality that is a little horrifying. We got a sense of what he feels when he captures an object, then replaces them in time and space. It’s cute to see some little baddie with a Mario hat and mustache, until you realize they may no longer exist after you exit their body.

We spent time in two other newly xintroduced worlds in our demo. In the Luncheon Kingdom, Mario needed to use giant corn on the cob pieces to traverse pools of pastel pink lava. And there was an especially mysterious puzzle where we had to capture a gigantic hunk of meat, which we wiggled tantalizingly in order to lure in a giant predator.
One of the first things you’ll immediately want to do upon exploring a new Super Mario Odyssey kingdom was run up to every creature, person, and object and see if you could capture it. As soon as we were plunked into the Seaside Kindgom, I sprinted around flinging my cap at every single critter. This was followed by a lot of cooing at whatever weird Mario hybrid was created. Mario became an octopus that shot water out of its backside, He became one of the iconic cheep cheeps ... with facial hair.
Mario befriends a parrot in this image we grabbed from Snapshot Mode, the game’s photo mode. In Snapshot mode, you can zoom, rotate the camera and add filters. Nintendo

It was in the Seaside Kingdom that we spent more time checking out the in-game store, where you can buy Mario outfits. That includes, of course, the beach trunks (and accompanying bare chest) that set social media on fire last week. Even from a few minutes of playing around, it seems these trunks paired with the in-game photo mode are going to lead to a lot of magical weirdness.
Snapshot Mode’s versatility assures we’re going to see so many amazing, creative, bizarre screenshots from the game. Once you enter photo mode, you can reposition the camera freely, zoom in dangerously close, then layer on the filters. We were able to get up close and personal with one of the octopus Marios, and also take the postcard-worthy snap you see above. Its something I could see myself spending hours fiddling with.
Check out 10 minutes of Super Mario Odyssey gameplay from our time with the game above. It’s out for the Nintendo Switch on Oct. 27.

[h=1]Super Mario Odyssey does a smart thing with amiibo unlockables[/h]

[h=2]Nintendo knows no one likes pay-gated content[/h]

Super Mario Odyssey will use all available amiibo to unlock special costumes for Mario, but if your amiibo collection is lacking, don’t worry. Nintendo’s website for the game notes that all “amiibo-exclusive” content will available without using amiibo at all.
It’s a design choice that is becoming rarer and rarer these days, when it seems like every big-budget game launches with a bevy of microtransactions in tow. Even Nintendo has gotten into the season pass game, for example, with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The Switch and Wii U game also locks certain costumes behind amiibo, like Link’s classic green tunic. A recent uproar emerged around Metroid: Samus Returns as well, because its hardest difficulty setting is locked behind amiibo figures.
This won’t be the case with Super Mario Odyssey, it seems. That’s not to say that Nintendo won’t try to entice us to pick up new amiibo alongside the game; there are some cute wedding-style Mario, Peach and Bowser figures launching later this month based on the getups they wear in Odyssey. But it’s reassuring to know that we’ll still be able to dress up Mario in his fancy white tux even if we’re unable to find the figure in stores.
Availability can be a big problem with amiibo, especially coveted ones. That combined with the sheer expense of them makes the idea of gating unlockables behind them anathema to completionists who want all the the content in their Nintendo games. We’re glad that we won’t have to worry about any of that when Super Mario Odyssey launches Oct. 27 — but that we’ll also be able to use the amiibo we do have to speed up the unlock process if we want.
