I am moving from symbian to Android and want to get my first Android under/in 20K. Right now I am looking at Samsung galaxy Gio 5660. Can't find any other in my range. If you have any other suggestions, kindly guide me.

I want a fast phone with good apps/games and compatible with future updates of android. The phone should be new or I can go with a used phone if its something exceptional.

Qs:

  1. If I go for Gio, does it have good support for apps or will I face any problems due to screen resolution/processor?
  2. Gio come with Android 2.2, can I upgrade it myself to latest Android version?
  3. What is rooting? What things and how much memory do I need for it?
  4. What are these different mods I keep reading about in Android thread?
  5. Is there anything else I need to know before getting my first android phone?

Bro, go for HTC Nexus one or Galaxy Ace.
They both fall under the price slot you mentioned , in new like condition.

I would try being as simple as I can in explaining you.

1.You would most probably face some problems, certain applications might not run and if they run will lag and what so ever. I would advise you to pick up a Nexus One used, new one comes for around 26k. Its the best phone for its price, its a Google nexus phone meaning ultimate software support from Google it self, you also have a lot of developer and application support thus you would not miss out on anything.
2.Gio can be upgraded to 2.3.3 Gingerbread official. Its worth mentioning that Gio doesn't have great Samung support nor Developer support.
3.Rooting basically gives you access to the system's NAND, in other words, it gives you SuperUser access. It would allow you to install custom ROMs, change bootvideos, mess around with system files, backup all your data, etc. and open a world of endless portabilities. It requires no memory, only requires superuser installed. Follow your phone's rooting guide on xda developer forum and you would be rooted in no time.
4.Do you mean custom ROMs? Well here is a proper definition:
A stock ROM is the version of the phone's operating system that comes with your phone when you buy it.
A custom ROM is a fully standalone version of the OS, including the kernel (which makes everything run), apps, services, etc - everything you need to operate the device, except it's customized by someone in some way.
Custom ROMs make your phone fast, give better battery times, more efficiency and what not. Sometimes if a phone does not receive a official update, the devs themselves make a custom ROM and thus you are not left behind.
There are a lot of custom ROMs for the Nexus One and each have their own speciality.
5.It would make you a geek :D Also Android phones normally do not have great battery times, the max is 2 days. Custom ROMs can be used to improvise. Other than this, installing custom ROMs can be addicting and are a must IMO :D They give so much cool new stuff. Also flashing them requires a full wipe thus you would loose your account data but nothing on the memory card.

^ Thanks for detailed answers mate.. appreciate that :)

  1. What do you mean when you say Gio doesn't have great developer support?
  2. Does Google Nexus One come with any warranty as I want to go with a new phone?
  3. So you mean rooting is like jailbreaking?
  4. So all these CyanogenMod, Dronix, Darky etc are the names of ROMs? Can I try these on Gio?

1.Android developers are power users who make stuff for a particular phone, roms, kernels, bug fixes, themes etc. Gio hardly has any since its not a popular device and thus it does not have any custom ROMs while on the other hand Nexus One has a huge number of developers thus you will find all sorts of rom, Cyanogen,MIUI etc. and other stuff. I couldn't even find a rooting guide for Gio.
2.It won't come with official warranty but if you buy online from hs, you would get repair warranty. Not sure if Brightex sells Nexus One.(they are official HTC dealer)
3.A sort of, you can install pirated apps on android without rooting too :D After rooting, you have the ability to customize the whole phone to your liking.
4.Yes these are ROMs and they are not available for Gio. Dronix is a Ideos exclusive ROM while Darky is Galaxy S exclusive. Only Cyanogen is found on several phones and it does not support Gio. Gio also does not have a specific category on xda developer forum.

Warranty doesn't really matter with phones like these... I mean the hardware isn't gonna fail unless you drop it down the staircase (in which case the warranty is automatically void).

I'd say get a Nexus One, with or without warranty. You will not regret it.

Mhmmm... Do I have any other options other than Nexus One in my range? I like choices you see..

And of what I should be careful and check about if I go for a used Android like Google Nexus One.. as I have never got a used phone before?

Are you saying that the official dealers (Brightex) do no supply warranty on the phones they sell - or - you're stating that 'you won't get official warranty' because the phone isn't bought from Brightex?

And responding to the new/used conversation above, tons of dealers daily sell used phones in mint condition as new and no one's the wiser. Yeah, true story.

An interesting thing I noticed on homeshopping was this;

http://homeshopping.pk/products/HTC-Google-Nexus-One-in-Pakistan.html

This is the page to their Google Nexus One product. Relevant text highlighted.

yesterday i made an order # 7938 for a new google nexus one, would you please tell me the preinstalled version of android on it? and is it possible to upgrade it to the latest version which supposed to be 2.3.3 if yes then how and where to upgrade i mean can i upgrade it myself at home and how, and in addition does the package comes with 4GB memory card?
Thanks,

Answer: Thank you for all your question. The phone does not come updated from the company but you can do that at any point in time.... The phone comes with all accessories which come from the company and no changes are made by HSN.

Thank you

Today I got my Nexus one which was order from your site on 22nd june... I am very happy with your service and loved the way you delivered it with care... I found every thing right but there was just one thing not available that is the 4gb Bundled memory card it was not there.. will you tell me why?

Answer: Thank you for liking the service and most importantly liking the product you got. Sorry but the SD Cards are not included in the phones we getting from our suppliers so would like you to excuse us for that.

Thank you
Sales Team

If you look at the Homeshopping page, it clearly lists the 4GB card as included. Stuff like this doesn't inspire much confidence in their services.

I am stating that you won't get official warranty if you buy from HSN, Brightex provides official warranty.

yeah their website isn't updated and even if they have the nexus one, you can expect the price to be a lot more than what's online.

Nexus one is 26000 on homeshopping. It's a much better phone than anything you can get with official warranty in this price range.

^ New battery mod and new overscroll glow :p

And dude... Get the Nexus One form Homeshopping. You are fussing too much over the warranty crap. Doesn't really matter. No major hardware issues in Nexus One.
