I am assuming you are in your 2nd year,if yes then

you can apply abroad after asking your dad whether he can pay for the expenses, because except Ivies,Oxbridge and WUSTL (washington university in saint loui),No other university is probably going to provide you a nice hefty scholarship,And as you are from Fsc,applying in Oxford or Cambridge is not an option cause they only accept A-level scores, you can mail them personally about the possibility of apply on the basis of SAT but I don't think they'll accept it,SAT is only useful for American universities and few others like NUS etc...

And apply k sath sath you can keep a safe option here aswell with applying to NUST and/or LUMS...I am sure you'll atleast, atleast get enough marks in NUST's test to get into PNEC electrical engineering,PNEC mechanical Engineering or CS from SEECS etc...

prepare for SAT abhi se hee,buy Princeton SAT + College board's official sat book, prepare from it,prepare nice and good, and then take the SATs in October or in November,AND DO REMEMBER: practice as much as possible, after you have ran out of practice test from the book, torrent the practice tests from kickass.to :p,apart from that, try to participate in College societies, debate competition (intra college or all pakistan etc),MUN's waghera or something like that,Extra curriculers are not that you play cricket with a local club or go to swimming LOL,extra curriculers here actually means countrywide events/clubs/societies/other stuff in which you participate...

also Don't if you are going to apply why commonapp,OR ANY university's own app, don't leave the process towards the end,This app filling stuff can be really really frusterating, cause they are long as hell, and YES,remember,ESSAY/statment on purpose you would have to write in the app DOES MATTER ALOT,so be considerate in it,Ask seniors about your essay on collegeconfidential

NOTE: If you are not understanding even any one of the terms I am mentioning like common-app etc,Do search about them,AND PLEASE join collegeconfidential forums,It would really help you,Go to all the rankings websites make a list of universities you are going to apply, search about them...

- - - Updated - - -

remember

1. Matric/olevel marks/grades MATTER ALOT,I CAN'T stress enough how important they are to the them
2. SAT score does matter,But you can still cover it up with really good matric marks and a well composed online App and especially essay..
as a ball-parked value,I'd say to get into a top 150 uni except ivy leagues etc,try to score atleast 1900
3. The Essay/Statement of purpose REALLY REALLY matters alot,I can't stress enough how important they are to them...
4. TOEFL doesn't matter, try to score 100 in it,WHICH is quite it,just don't stress it,it doesn't matter at all,it is just for visa purposes but as every thing has some sort of limit, your score must not be below 90...

COURTESY: my best friend who is going in UW MADISON this 18th
Thanks for the reply, bro.
Yes, I am in 2nd Year.
Matric marks 990/1050 (94.28%)
I know English enough and I am GOOD at Maths 150/150 in Matric. I took an online practice TOEFL test today and it seemed easy.

But how the hell can I participate in so much Extra curricular activities , prepare an Essay, and make preparation for SAT and still get enough marks to get in NUST/UET in just 2 months?!

I can work hard but ain't that a little too much? Plus, what were the Matric/olevel/SAT Scores and extra curricular activities of your friend?? UW MADISON is among top 20 Universities of the World, but top 150 dosen't seem good enough..Does it? And is there any chance for ivy league?

it is not so difficult, and it is sort of stressed work but it is not like "VERY HARD"....a few but genuine extra curriculers would suffice, essay preparation you can continue slowly with studies and all stuff,jo time free hota us mein se half hour/1 hours, surfing pe/thinking pe lga dena, the SAT preparation would surely help you in your LUMS' test, and a bit in Nust's test aswell,Morever ,Nust's test is not so difficult,as I SAID,you can easily score 125-132 etc even without giving proper time to Nust preparation,My other friend is in Virginia tech,Who gave Nust's test really really casually, scored 132,I gave it too without even preparing a single thing, got 122,so it is quite easy....

I am again saying, join College-con forum,go through the Class of 2018 thread, you will find many answers to your queries, make threads in there, ask questions/any sort of queries

Remember: Rankings are just A benchmark,do you know most american native students Don't base their choice on rankings?,This is because education system there is quite leveled up and 2ndly because there are many many factors which rankings lack,But as I said, rankings are still pretty "objective" measure...

always select unis to apply from a pool of Safe schools, match schools and reach schools (read them about on us college news or just google, and ALSO READ how to find which school is safe/reach or match)

My Bestie's profile:

SAT: 1750
SAT subject: not taken
Matric: 91.5%
Part 1 Fsc. 480/550
Extra curriculers: A few, probably in a chemistry club of college,an internship of 1 month I guess at some factory, and 1,2 other things
probably a really gem of an essay,He worked really really really really hard on that part...btw community service is also considered A SOLID SOLID EC

you have a whole year to apply for ivies,so if you really want to apply, you must have really good solid EC's and a really really really Awesome essay in which you write having a clear ambition/highly talented thinking etc with a SAT score ATLEAST above 2200 I "RECKON",with a sheer bit of luck,BUT DO apply for atleast one Ivy...Atleast thats what I know, meet some college advisor too if you want to,but it Ain't neccassary for other colleges except ivies....remember: ivy leagues want those students who bring something new to it,any talent/vision/ambition,and ivies are a reach school for almost every every student

AOA people, Im looking to go to USA for Masters and I would like to know about experiences of people who have done bachelors from Paki and Masters from US. Which universities are you in? What documentation and tests are required? And which consultants, if any, did you use or are good/reputed?

well, its a bummer but YES. either u do A levels, or Intermediate or even MBA, hell, Even if one has MA English Linguistics degree, they need IELTS result for UK, Canada, US, Australia and New Zezland. and usually its over and above IELTS bands 6.5. infact its the more the better formula here.

btw i did my IELTS in August and got 8 Band score ;)

now im also considering to go abroad

CANADA, Student Visa and Expenses

hi. im interested in getting the info about going to Canada as a student. i need to know detailed or at least approximate estimate about all the expenses and fees that i would need to pay.

i need some info about any uni where fee is lowest and also the expenses are comparatively lower than other areas. now, dont recommend me Memorial University for their fucked up education system and even more fucked up weather... ;)

also pls dont say go to University of Toronto, cant afford.

simply advise me which university is better for lower fees and living expenses and also where i can easily get some job.

i will be interested in getting admission in Business and commerce related fields. any thing.

i know there are many people here on PG who might have some knowledge about this. so guys pls help me out about this.

i have very limited finances and would like to study and work there with lowest expenditures.

thanks in advance.

So I've made up my mind to pursue Masters in Informatics or Information Systems from Technical University of Munich. I'm currently in 8th semester of my BS Computer Engineering from SSUET, Karachi.

The problem is that I'd probably end up with a very low CGPA which would be around 2.7. Now, I know that the University website doesn't state that the applicants' GPA should be above a certain mark but a lot of people will be applying. How can I increase my chances of getting Admission in this uni? GRE & English Language Proficiency proof seems to be required here and most of the Program is gonna be taught in English.

Anyone here ever faced such an issue? Got any advice?

Hey brothers, like many here I also have the dream to do Masters from abroad, and as many of us know that Germany and Malaysia are the most affordable countries. So I am currently in final year of Bachelors in Engineering (Metallurgy and Materials Engineering) and I want to do Masters from abroad, at least I want to try hard. so in that regard I need some help from you all specially the ones who are already studying abroad like NaNoW. I have researched German university and know the process, the confusion is how can I get scholarships? I can hardly make up the 8000 euros so I got to have some arrangement for the 2nd year. I will give IELTS in Jan or Feb INSHALLAH, have cleared GAT already. I will Graduate in dec 2014 and will be applying for the winter semester 2014.

1. try getting erasmus or full bright
2. You have to "show" 8000 euros every couple of years..that means, you can borrow some money in germany from your freinds or anyone and then give it back when visa gets extended..
3. you can earn easily via student jobs or other odd jobs.

I did the same, applied on the basis of my provisional result, cpga of 7 semesters and indivisual gpas ..

and apply for scholarships from Pakistan..But I dont understand why you need a scholarship// I mean its great that you want scholarship, but you dont need one in germany since studying costs next to nothing ..including accomdation
