STOCK OVERCLOCKING by a standup comedian

Hi I'm curious to discuss which processors and 3d cards offer the greatest increase in stock overclocking (stock means you use the processor or 3dcard's built in cooling fan i.e. no extra cooling solution).

Bear in mind the discussion is only with stock cooling.

I've read on the intel side that the dual core 5200's (round 2.7ghz) can overclock to 3.7ghz on stalk cooling!!!! Mess with the voltages a little and get a cheap cooling fan like the coolermaster hyper 212 something and you go up to 4.2ghz. It is a cheap procesor currently around 5.5k new, so with such a heavy overclock on stalk cooling i think it really is great value.

On the amd side the athlon x2 4000's like 4200 or 4800 i read had good overclocking potential, but nothing as much as intel unfortunately. Amd's used to be the best overclockers years ago, but not anymore, even though some of the black edition pheonoms and new athlon 2's are decent. I think its hilarious how you mention amd now and people still say amd?! bohat overclocking walee machine hai zabardast. Monkeys.

On the 3d card side i dont think any modern card can overclock past 10% increase these days, but i could be wrong.
My 9800gtx otherwise called gts250 overclocks to a 10% increase with fan setting at 69% with no temperature difference. Actualy there is usualy a temperature drop when i set fan manualy to 69%!

This is a sad overclock, i wish there was some card out there that was really cheap and overclock like hell to the level of my 9800gtx!

I repeat again this debate is for STOCK COOLING since well cooling solutions are not for the faint of heart and open up a whole can of arguments of whether an expensive liquid cooled system can offer the performance increase in respect to the cost and time required. Also i cant believe those nerds on youtube have enough time to use LIQUID NITROGEN to cool they're processor, i hope they spill it on they're private parts.

If your using liquid nitrogen to cool your processor, you will have no girlfriend and in turn no need for a private part.

Also if your a 16 year old who just went online to correct all my facts, please remind yourself you are a tiny 16 year old woman regardless of your gender.

I think you can safely hit around 4.0 on many Wolfdales like the E5400 and the E6300 even on stock cooling. The temperatures will depend heavily on the ambient temps, as is the case with all forms of air cooling. Of course with a cheap after-market cooler (eg. Hyper 212) youll get lower temps than stock cooling.

What kind of clocks a particular chip can achieve varies from chip to chip. Some E5200s can easily get to 4.0 with no/minimal increase in vcore. But another E52 might need a lot more vcore to achieve the same clocks. More vcore = higher temps.

Once again this can vary from chip to chip. Refer to some of the 3DMark06/Vantage or the Unigine Benchmark threads here to check what kind of clocks people have been able to achieve with their cards. The newer 40nm cards (Fermi and Radeon 5xxx) run much cooler than older cards based on larger fabrication and are hence able to achieve higher clocks while generating less heat.

I have overclocked my old P4 2.8GHz upto 3.4GHz stable with a very little change in vcore. It ran quite cool for normal usage though cpu intensive task do tend to show their strain sooner or later and you can expect a few crashes here and there if your using stock cooling solutions .

The introduction of the new 32nm architecture has opened up new doors for overclockers. I have tested a friend's core i3 530 2.93GHz and have easily overclocked to 3.9GHz-4.0GHz though the system kept crashing at heavy usage. At anything below and upto 3.6GHz the temperatures remained bearable. I reckon the new i3s and i5s can be overclocked around 15-25% without a need for a dedicated cooling system.

I haven't got any screen shots at the moment but will try put some up of the p4 If any one asks.

Stock OC worked fine for my E8400... At least in winters. E8400 can be OC'd to 3.6 on stock cooling and voltages.

on the stock cooler you can overclock core i7-980x at good clocks bcz it has a good stock cooler j/k

brother why you want to oc through stock cooler a cheap cooler such as hyper 212 have nice temps result while oc'ing and in summer the oc on stock is totally based upon your cooling and ventilation in the case

i also need to know one thing....is it ok to OC an e6500 dual core to 3.6ghz and keep it that way for everyday usage on stock cooling in this weather???

Hi street King, i think if you mostly use your pc to play games i think its ok to leave it OCed as long as your temps never exceed nomal range. I've done it for a year now.
Bear in mind that you run the risk of frying your processor faster if you leave it OCed with a bad power supply/stabilizer/etc or if you OC it past the recommended limit.
