You are thinking from Sony's point of view think as a consumer.
I don't give a crap if a short japneese rich guy can afford a ps3 i can't and i am pretty sure millions of others people can't as well sony wants to win the format war why make the gamers as the guinea pigs and make the ps3 a blu ray trojan horse.

because sony know they're investing in the future, with the amount of content thats shipping on discs at this time you forgive me for saying that DVD's will become obsolete in 2 years time. Thats when the bigger storage mediums will shine truely, thats when blu ray will have its time in the spotlight. Sony obviously have planned ahead in this sense and for that i truely agree with them, hence im not asking anyone to buy a PS3 right now either, hell as a consumer myself i'd rather have a price drop too.

But buying one right NOW will also have its benefits thats what the point is. Having a primary blu ray console, a near perfect ps2 and a next gen ps3 all in the same box. (yes PS2 compatability is kick ass, especially since the new firmware that fixes the graphics).

digital content distribution is a good concept and it helps in some way but the entire medium format turning digital is pure wishful thinking, the world will keep using optical medium format for like ever.. and that aint exaggeration.

persnally i think ps3 is not overpriced....... just take a look of the machine and what it offers for 600 US$. i don't know why ppl. are making fuss about it.

bottom line.... if u want a BD player and consider games as a plus point then get a ps3. if u want 2 play lots of games buy 360 (just for now)

me you forgive me for saying that DVD's will become obsolete in 2 years time.
wow, that's a big statement with dozens of millions of dvd players in the world still selling like crazy, movie sales of $25 billion in 2006 on dvd support of every studio in the world with every movie coming on dvd, with a projected 40% adaptation of HDTV's in US by end of 2008 this is a big big prediction.
But buying one right NOW will also have its benefits thats what the point is. Having a primary blu ray console, a near perfect ps2 and a next gen ps3 all in the same box. (yes PS2 compatability is kick ass, especially since the new firmware that fixes the graphics).
So you are saying i should buy a ps3 and pay the extra $200 even though i don't want blu ray i can't afford a HDTV which is necessary for the blu ray movies? can you cough up an extra $1500 in the next 2 years so you can use that feature?

(yes PS2 compatability is kick ass, especially since the new firmware that fixes the graphics).
Strange just a yesterday i was hearing crazy stuff like how people were losing their save games when playing a PS2 title on PS3.

Pretty right, if you don't want BD don't buy ps3 and i don't want blu ray i guess you do.

er.. from what i've read that only happened to one guy and it happened after firmware upgradion, his virtual memory card got swiped after his firmware upgraded. So ?

and it switched from 'the graphics appear worse then they do on a ps2' to 'memory card gets swiped' lol, people just need a reason to bash eh ?

its a big prediction i know but its one thats most likely going to turn out to be true, but the other more important thing that i said which i also believe is true is that while the movie people/media etc will want to release things on DVD's because of their already big market, they'll also focus on the next generation of players, blu ray and HDDVD (mostly blu ray though) isnt just going to sit there idly.

So you are saying i should buy a ps3 and pay the extra $200 even though i don't want blu ray i can't afford a HDTV which is necessary for the blu ray movies? can you cough up an extra $1500 in the next 2 years so you can use that feature?
actually devil, im pretty sure YOU wont buy a PS3 even if you had the cash lol, my reply was in context of the people who actually WANT to buy one, and most people who buy a BD player will also want to buy a HD TV, its just common sense.

You should have been here when pakgamers opened ( gamerzspot ) i was planning to buy a ps3 lol. Wanting and affording are 2 different things very few people can afford a ps3 + HDTV.

errmm. why give a reason Sony said perfect BC at launch don't overclaim and people won't overbash its really simple.

thats just wrong, if a person can afford to spend 25k rupees on a games console he can spend more on a better TV too, besides the notion that you absolutely NEED an HDTV to enjoy blu ray of ps3 is just wrong. Games are play tested on both HD and SD Tv's to ensure quality on both 360 and PS3 as far as i know.

the only thing that went wrong at launch time was that the ps3 automatically tried to play all ps2 games in 480p while only a few of the ps2 games support that resolution, hence the weird graphics, even back then the more technically advanced ps2 games like god of war etc looked superb. Since this new firmware upgrade even that issue has been fixed, and the ps3's still got one major region to go.

So, sony has pretty much fixed the BC issue before going worldwide. Thats the end of that issue

Blu ray movies require a HDTV. And i don't think a person who can afford a console can also afford a HDTV i have been saving for an year now and have 27K a HDTV costs a whole lot more and unless you have a HDTV the extra money of PS3 blu ray is useless.

Personally i have no problem with this a console launch is bound to have troubles but Sony just set themselves up for backfire " we will have perfect BC right and launch and won't have any problems like our competitors "

you know in a sense that statement IS right, besides the graphics glitches (there goes perfect though) the ps3 even from day 1 had a big BC advantage over its competition.

oh come on devil, blu ray doesnt require a HD TV, and besides you may also consider that the ps3 doesnt need to come in a "i'll save money for it" category seeing as how it can be a general blu ray and standard dvd format player for the entire family when they buy a new TV to go along with it. See what im saying.

PS3's can be bought for a multitude of reasons. Not just gaming. Thats the beauty of it.

Here is an interesting and intriguing fact which i just learnt about the Blu-Ray. I am not sure if you guys already know it or not...

Java software support

At the 2005 JavaOne trade show, it was announced that Sun Microsystems' Java cross-platform software environment would be included in all Blu-ray Disc players as a mandatory part of the standard. Java will be used to implement interactive menus on Blu-ray Discs, as opposed to the method used on DVD video discs, which uses pre-rendered MPEG segments and selectable subtitle pictures, which is considerably more primitive and less seamless. Java creator James Gosling, at the conference, suggested that the inclusion of a Java virtual machine as well as network connectivity in BD devices will allow updates to Blu-ray Discs via the Internet, adding content such as additional subtitle languages and promotional features that are not included on the disc at pressing time. This Java Version will be called BD-J and will be a subset of the Globally Executable MHP (GEM) standard. GEM is the world-wide version of the Multimedia Home Platform standard.

The BD-ROM specification defines four profiles of Blu-ray players. All video-based profiles are required to have a full implementation of BD-J. The 1st generation players are based on the Profile 1 (BD-Video) specification that does not require support of certain features such as Picture-in-Picture, secondary audio, local storage, and network connections. Profile 1.1 makes PIP, secondary audio and local storage mandatory. Profile 2 (BD-Live) adds network connectivity to the list of mandatory functions. Profile 3 is meant for an audio-only player and does not require video decoding or BD-J.

YES IT DOES TO WATCH HD MOVIES YOU NEED HDTV
What sony should have done is
$600 Premium PS3 with Blu Ray, 60GB etc for all the people who want all these things in one hardware.
$300 PS3 without blu ray, 20 Gb for the people who just wanna buy a game console.
