Playstation Sony: feeling good” about the progress of Blu-ray.

Despite its launch troubles with PS3, Sony says it’s “feeling good” about the progress of Blu-ray.

The long-term success of PS3 rests largely on take-up of Blu-ray as the next generation DVD platform. PlayStation 3 comes with a Blu-ray drive, which offers comparative value against specific players currently on the market. Blu-ray is up against HD-DVD for dominance of this emerging market.

In an earnings conference call yesterday Rob Wiesenthal, chief financial officer of Sony's U.S. operations said "We are feeling really good about Blu-ray right now, but it is early days."

He added, "In Japan, about 96% of the hardware being sold for high-definition format are coming from the Blu-ray family. It's a format with over 100 different CE manufacturers. Obviously we have the launch coming up in Europe for PS3. So we are feeling very good about that.”

Sony points out that the top five films of last year - as well as the top 11 of 15 - were all released exclusively on Blu-ray.

blu-ray has alot more capacity than the HD DVD so obvioulsy it'll have more clearer picture

its not about the capacity, the thing is that before the launch of the playstation 3 the only few BD players on the market were absolute crap and they didnt even have a good catalog of movies to display either.

HD DVD got off to a better start, but its run is over now

well yes, by far the best blu ray player in the market at this moment is the playstation 3, thats widely accepter over the internet.

well yeah, as i said, before the PS3 the blu ray format was not that well received but sony was billing the ps3 all the time as the primary blu ray player and that turned out to be true and now as you can see blu ray is outselling HD DVD

no thats a general internet statement, you'll see people whining almost everywhere that the ps3 is expensive waah waah..

as for blu ray movies, eventually the format WILL make its way to pakistan once it really picks up all over the world so dont worry about it.

well really no, the blu ray player costs about 200-300 dollars to make the $1000 are just way overpriced.

its been more then made clear that the technology that comes with the ps3 is far more then 600$ , its a big bargain.

And its a given that with the popularity of blu ray format when people see that the expensive blu ray players are crap, they'll naturally turn to the ps3. Hence the PS3 will fulfill game AND next gen media needs alongside.

what if they threw in a random useless gadget with the ps3 and made it even more expensive? simply answer this would you rather have a $300-400 PS3 which can be upgraded with a Blu ray addon or you are happy with a $600 priced PS3 even if you don't want a blu ray player?

we dont have the luxury of that choice now do we, and lets not turn this into a "but the 360 is the same as PS3" discussion.

as for the price, do you really think that the 600 will seem overriced after a year or two ? as its been made clear the blu ray format is the way of the current new video formats hence the blu ray demand will increase tremendously in the coming year. All the better reason to own a PS3 rather then an expensive standalone blu ray only player.

I am happy with my DVD player are you not? who knows what will happen in the next 2 years the blu ray may be winning against HD-DVD but so far both have been what can be called "failures" they haven't gained any momentum.
The point here is $600 is TOO MUCH not matter what you are getting. Hell i am not ready to pay $400 for the 360 because i think that's too expensive as well. Just give me a 200-300 game console i don't really give a crap about movies just make them addons. Want one buy one don't want save your $200.

600 may be too much for people like us, but for the americans japanese europeans their equivilent price isnt THAT high (hell im sure you must've read the news items about how the japanese public hates the 20 gig PS3 model and would rather have the more expensive 60 gig model instead). DVD's may stick around for a lot longer too but thats like saying ps2's going to stick around, developers/movie people will want to focus on the next generation of formats as much as they'd want to keep the old one's going because of their high market audience.

DVD's have come a long way and they're most commonly used because of their availability and somewhat cheap prices, but there was a time when DVD's were also going through the phase that blu ray is going through right now.

That being said, the future is still bright for blu ray, and ps3's price will obviously also drop in the year, with the whole 65 nm processor, sony fixing their diode issues and blu ray being accepted more news items on the net you can imagine sony's cost of manufacturing a ps3 has lessened considerably from before.
