What I want to know is that is this a good idea or not:

http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=108208

I plan to combine a 300w dell's branded psu and another 400w one that also came out of a branded system. The 300w one would run the drives, fans etc and the 400w one would drive the rest. The rest being a p5kpl-cm, e7200 oc'ed and a 4870 (whenever I buy it).

I want to know if this is a good idea or is it risky to run even after successfully combining the two psus. Thanks.

Spending on a new psu is what I'm trying to avoid. I'm currently saving to buy a 4870. If I'm able to combine these two psus, I would be able to buy the 4870 and run it without having to spend on a new psu.

^^ ummmm i c but i hope that ur 400w branded psu has enuf amerage on the 12v rails to run the 4870, if ur so keen on geting a highend card u must also have a compatible PSU to run it with.
I'd still suggest that u sell both of em, add a few k's and go for a cx400 which is retailing around 4.5k, It will easily run ur whole system without a hitch even with overclocking. Plus it is 80+ effecient :)
Never compromise on the PSU :p !

Actually i quiet like the idea.I never heard anobody doing this before. Let it be an experiment and let us know if it worked or not.

@Totaloverdose. Ahan. What about cm's 460watt one? Would it be able to handle the 4870?

@Safriz. It is a bit risky thats why I'm not sure whether I want to experiment on this system or not.

@Sunny945. Space isnt a problem. My case has enough space at the bottom to hold another psu.

@Overboost!
That thing requires some modding skills. But in Pakistan, its actually not a good idea to run TWO Power Supplies to provide power to ONE System.
Overclockers.net --- You might wanna look at this. Its not an easy task so just leave it.

You intend to buy a 4870. I would say, instead of relying upon your current PSU's , get a new one. Wont cost you much but it will be a better choice.

Corsair CX400 as other people are saying.

@abobobilly. Just checked out the link. I think it's a pretty easy thing to do thats why I gave it a thought in the first place. Ofcourse buying a new psu is the best way to do it but I want to know if this rig would be reliable if I get it to work.

MAn both PSU will use same ground and this is dangerous. And there will be a slight difference in their start up and off timing. I also did this but it didn't worked well.

Lol you remind me of old times :D

I did this with two generic PSUs (500 + 250) watts. On 250 watt I was running hard drives, dvd rom, fans... etc and on 500 watt I was running my mobo, processor, rams and 4870. But since you're also going for 4870 I should warn you that this method didn't worked with my 4870 because that 500 watt PSU didn't have enough amps to feed this card. So I advice you to go for a branded PSU.... CX400 is your best bet as it has enough juice to get this card going.

Note that this dual PSU method is not dangerous if you do it carefully but it won't work with 4870 and you'll encounter errors because of low amps.

Thank you all for the replies. You've changed my mind on the dual psu and I'm thinking about buying a new one now.

@Black viper. How many amps are we talking about for the 4870?

18 amps on one rail. 36 amps combined (as one 4870 require two power connectors).

CM460 watts is ok to get but its not better than Corsair CX400, because CX400 is an 80+ certified PSU. That is why everyone suggesting you CX400 rather than CM460.
