EDIT 2: please read post #11 to help! below issue is moot now...

title says it all. this just randomly happens, not just in windows but anytime at all. sometimes the problem goes away for a little while only to come back just as bad as it was and then to go away again for a little while.

i tried:

-killing overclock and even underclocking.
-clearing CMOS by replacing the little battery on the mobo
-running memtest, came back clean(0 errors)
-replacing memory
-checking temps, all normal(CPU: 39C to 43C idle, GPU: 42C idle)
-removing GTX-460 and running on built-in graphics.

problem still there every time. as far as i know, this just suddenly started happening :(. advice?

EDIT: SPECS over there <<<<<<<<<

Did you try reinstalling windows? Also it could be power supply or motherboard related. Using another power supply might fix it.

This is one of the problems i am facing myself, and it started happening on its own. Its Memory related problem.

The problem is, memtest wont find any errors in rams (probably because there isn't any), but Windows' MemTest WILL Find some memory errors and mention it as some sort of 'hardware' problem (memory related i.e a stick is faulty ... which isn't actually).

I also have this problem with my P35 chipset and XMS2 800Mhz rams, and like i said before, it just starts happening out of no where.

What happens is that windows do not boot, and get stuck at startup BIOS Screen, just like its stuck at detecting some device and its not detecting it .... but the problematic thing is, it detects my memory find i.e. 4096MB and then goes further to check my Optical Drive and Hard Disks (boot device checking operation) ... and sometimes it halts at Optical/Hard Drive checking.

Now this makes me wonder if its my Optical/Hard Drives but it never was the problem. Heck its not even memory related because if rams are faulty, why would they run just fine in another system for a period of over 3 months.
I was concerned that this problem was strictly motherboard related, and that motherboard develops some sort of 'bug' overtime.

But then i checked a 2GB Corsair 800Mhz Value Ram (operates at 1.9v stock) .... but it gave me no problems for a period of over 3 months

As i have 800Mhz rams, turning Voltage upto 1.85v and mostly 1.9v (XMS2 runs at 1.8v stock), and tuning the speed down to 667Mhz mostly boots the computer for me .. with just ONE stick. And then i would insert the other stick and it boots just fine. Then running windows for a couple of minutes and then restarting in boot menu, and changing it back to overclocked settings with just ONE setting left as it as i.e. Memory Voltage = 1.85 or 1.9v and changing the Ratio (for overclocking) manually (dont set it to auto) .... works just fine for me for a period of ... undetermined amount.

This was just my experience which i TRIED To put in words. As i have no solution for this problem yet, i dont think i will be able to help you with any.
But just change your Memory Stick and Slot .... and see if the problem goes away. It does go away for me .... sometimes.

check your PSU, connections...make sure nothing is loose..clean your PC...just disassemble everything and reconnect it

you can try this, one user claimed here @ pg it worked
clean your windows 7 registry.......

but then your saying it shows blank screen so i see some hardware prob...

---------- Post added at 11:05 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:03 PM ----------

and btw underclocking will never fix anything, it should work on normal settings if the problem never persisted

I played resource intensive games and they worked without any problem but still random restarting is persisting. And it has DEFINITELY gotten more frequent. i still need help.

@my3m: i cant check my PSU as I dont hav another PC. connections all checked. PC is clean. also tried dissembling. i tested each and every component by removing them and testing PC except the processor. the prob has nothing to do with windows as it restarts during BIOS setup, during games and everything in between. All my PC components except RAM and HD drives are less than 1 year old(last october).

99% of these problems are related to weak PSU.

Reinstalling windows won't help as its random and you don't know whats causing it. However you can try a different PSU and see if problem persists.

It may seem unrelated but sometimes bad LAN controller can also cause this. Try Disabling the LAN in BIOS and plug away the LAN Cable and than use PC for 4 to 5 hours. If no crash or hangup than you will have to change your MB or get a lan card extra.

@faheem: i dont hav any extra thermal paste so i dont want to touch the CPU until as a last resort. I am currently using it outside my case and it has improved alot(its only been 5 minutes, it usually restarts anywhere from 2 secs to 30 mins of usage).

@alienX: i tried disabling LAN like u said but the prob was still there. :( I dont have a different PSU but the one I do hav is, as I understand, a very good and reliable one as it was recommended to me by 7-8 people on PG when i asked for suggestion to buy. I dont think its PSU otherwise the computer would not be able to function at peak at all instead of only the random restarting it does.

im still very much in need of your help guys. kindly give any advice you can, ive tried everything i know so far in trying to fix this.

This solved my problem a few months back....i was able to use all 1dbx4 ram pieces with my mobo, and now it doesn't work with all 4 but works with only 3. alot of googling has lead me to the conclusion that its a bug in the mobo and i will update my bios as soon as i get time :(

guys, i followed faheem's advice and took my mobo out of my case and turning it on with all components and it worked flawlessly so i assumed the motherboard was touching the case and thus grounding it out. i placed cardboard this time between my mobo and the casing and reassembled it as I thought the problem was fixed and it was running as good as always.

but now the mobo wont turn on. the motherboard's power light is on, but still it does nothing when i press the power button. i tried doing it by using a screwdriver on the two pins but still it wont turn on. i then took it out of the case again to see if it would run like it was before but now it doesnt work outside of the case either. the mobo just wont turn on! what the hell is this things problem? i seriously dont hav time to deal with this... any idea what to do?

i'm still less than one year into my 3-year warranty... do u think i can get this replaced?

Prpably you have killed the board. If its light is on but not doing anything you turn it on, but fans spin for a moment and stop, board was faulty in first place and disassembling it may have caused more damage due to static on your body and during handling.

hm... my boards lights are on but the fans dont spin, the power button doesnt do anything. i also found by accident that if u touch the bottom pins of ICH7, it turns on but it doesnt show anything on screen. i did this thing 7-8 times. so the board isnt dead atleast.
but yes, its possible i damaged the board too.. :(
is warranty possible? what can i say to them to get this replaced? im going to unicenter tomorrow btw

Personally i see only one game that should be truly deserving of GOTY title this year (if it delivers). And that's KCD:II

The gameplay is generic & outdated in that game. And it's 5 hour campaign is too short to enjoy.

About Hellblade 2, I just watched the story on a YT channel out of curiosity and I think it has the Hallmark of a GOTY this year. While many criticize the game and I also don't like this genre of game, I believe the story and visuals looks like a cenimatic masterpiece.
It may win the "best visuals" category, but that's about it. A GOTY contender needs to nail all aspects (Story, Gameplay, Visuals, etc)

That's still higher than it's total play length. A 5 hour campaign for a $50 game is downright scammy.

I have a PS5 but I am not satisfied with the experience. I am currently saving for a 4080 64 GB rig soon. Bit will wait for Pro if performance improves. This gen has been so bad I don't plan on buying consoles anymore for AAA gaming.
