Overheating Laptop!

So i bought Inspiron N5010 the Ci5 version, and installed MW2 on it, played it for a while and my laptop got really hot, and after an hour, it shut down by itself!

I was wondering if there is a solution to this overheating problem? and my laptop was on the table and i also put 2 books under the edges to lift the laptop for better air inflow! Will those fancy laptop coolers do the trick? and my GPU temps reach 90 degrees on full load! some international forum said that this is alright for laptops! but iam still worried!

Any suggestions?

Buy a good quality Laptop cooler. I have a cheap one, it does the work perfectly while watching movies etc, but is insufficient while playing games.

Can't say about the temperature, but the air that my Laptop's internal fan throws out is extremely hot. A person can't put his hand there for more than 5 seconds!

well any laptop will get extremely hot while gaming (I myself had a hp pavilion dv2000 series laptop before upgrading to a desktop) and that also got quite hot while gaming....however it never shut off by itself due to an overheating component....and my laptop would also reach around 90 degrees....so while a decent quality laptop cooler will help out, you might also want to get ur laptop checked out to see if the cooling components (fans, heatpipes, etc.) are functioning properly...

as for the laptop cooler, check out myshop.com.pk, and homeshopping.pk they should have some....but not sure how good they are....

So, there is a chance for my laptop to run fairly cooler, once i install the cooling device? what i mean to say is, uska faida to hota hai na? :p

and ive read that its best to buy coolers which are powered externally rather than a USB port, any difference?

IMO if you bought the laptop recently then it should not overheat, my laptop being over 2 years old doesnt overheat even tough i put it on my bed/pillows/blanket etc . Its either bad TIM application by DELL or shoddy build quality. i'd recommend either sending in while its in warranty and let dell fix the problem for you or you could by a notebook cooler
there is another way to fix this but i wont recommend this unless you have lots of experience opening laptops. what you do is open up the notebook and replace the TIM on the CPU and GPU.

PS: notebook coolers do nothing IMO :D

dude, i put it on pillows and shit too, it works like a charm then, but it only starts to heat up when i play a GPU hungry game on it! otherwise i love my laptop! and its only been a month or so since i bought it!!

i think you should have the laptop checked out to see if the thermal compound has been applied properly, and if the cooling components are working like they should be....because as Photographer said, ur laptop shouldnt be overheating....my laptop never overheated once while i was gaming (and i had mine for 3 years, give or take a few months)....and i played cod4 multiplayer, need for speed carbon, and lots of other games on it too...

no need to check out the laptop ... its perfectly fine.... a cheap laptop cooler wud do the trick partially .... get a NIDEC 120mm fan and use it as an exhaust where the laptop give out hot air .... i m using it on a laptop with 260Mgtx and and it took down the temperatures by 10 degrees ... this coupled with a laptop cooler can make a 115 to 18 degrees difference.. TRIED AND TESTEDD

So many different opinions, iam seriously confused here! i can install a 120mm fan on the exhaust! and get a cooling pad! but as Raheelc and Photographer suggested, is this overheating on maximum load natural? :s

plz post the pic of HW monitor so we can see what temps you are getting?

also do you hear you laptop fan spinning hard and and pushing hot air out while gaming?

i would say that reapply the paste and make sure that your heat sink is placed right.cos i play on hp dv5 by lifting it above 5 inches of the ground and never get above 70 C even after hours of gaming.

you know your laptop wasnt worth something if you have to arrange for extra cooling! if your on a flat surface and if it overheats sadly says a lot about the build quality!

My laptop (toshiba satellite L305-D) reached in 90 to 95 degree centigrade zone while gaming. It is more than one year old from date of purchase.
Just two days ago I connected a mouse, usb keyboard, display monitor, charged my china mobile via usb AND played dabang dvd on it. After one and half hour of use it shutdown by itself.
Air was coming out of the exhaust and the fan was blowing very hot air. I waited for half and hour and it became alright.
My problem is same except my laptop is older.
Rite now the temp is 75 c while browsing alone.

give it a thorough cleaning by blowing lots of air through the components and ensure that hs surface is cleaned and apply artic silver or some other superior thermal paste, also try to adjust fan speed settings to ensure that the fan is on all the time...remember just always ensure flat surface such as table not a stack a of books, those little 4 hinges that raise the laptop half a inch are there for a reason!

well, this is what i did, i installed two fans, one fan under the laptop intake for better inflow of air, and one on the exhaust blowing air out, Temps dropped by 10c on full load, and my laptop surface didnt feel warm at all! but still, should i still be worried? oh and my laptop fan speed is constant at 30%!! :s

PC Gamer score of 58/100 for Hellblade 2??? Is it really worse than Gollum that was 64/100? Microsoft games can't even come close to high scores of Sony exclusives apparently.

About the Microsoft (and Sony) debate, I feel both have become too greedy and losing their minds over corporate greed. Personally, I will never buy any console next gen and switch to PC gaming where democracy reins.
