In Halo: Reach, players experience the fateful moments that forged the Halo legend. It’s the story of Noble Team, a squad of heroic Spartan soldiers, and their final stand on the planet Reach, humanity’s last line of defense between the terrifying Covenant and Earth. This darker story is echoed by grittier visuals amid a backdrop of massive, awe-inspiring environments. Characters, enemies and environments are rendered in amazing detail by an all-new engine designed to deliver epic-scale encounters against the cunning and ruthless Covenant.

A little bit of back story i wrote about the events and important characters in the story that only those who've read the novel are familiar with. I hope this helps you appreciate some of the moments in the game better than you would have otherwise.

The planet Reach was the center of Human Research and development. It was also extremely well defended. An armada of frigates lined up and ready for battle at a moment’s notice. Multiple orbital defense stations all set up at key points with Heavy-duty MAC cannons – One round could push clean through a covanent Capital ship. If that wasn’t enough, there were tons more MAC cannons on ground around the entire planet.
The planet was the Fortress so to speak. Most of the population believed the defensive and offensive capabilities of the planet were more than enough to handle any covanent invasion fleet…or any invasion fleet they had yet encountered in the past.
The planet was also home to the Spartan – II program, which John (Mastercheif) had been a part of. He, along with around 70 other kids were kidnapped from their homes from various systems (galaxies) around the universe and were brought to Reach and put through training so brutal that was, in some ways, un-ethical.
They were all very young…as young as 6 years old, but they all had some specific physical and mental capabilities that were exceptional from normal human beings, making them eligible for the program and the un-imaginably painful physical augmentation where the candidates were given specific (illegal) medicines to genetically enhance their strength, speed and reflexes tenfold.
The founder of the program was a civilian doctor, Doctor Halsey. She wasn’t with the military, but due to her contribution to the program she worked close with them, inside the Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) on Reach. She had been like a mother to the Spartans they never had. She had watched all of them grow up in front of her through the years into the lethal killing machines they were trained to. All of the Spartans deeply respected her and may be feared her seemingly cold personality; her stare could punch a hole straight through that half-ton armor and make them second guess themselves at times. Most of them didn’t really know how to react with her due to her non-military status – standard protocols of engagement obviously didn’t apply.
Another thing most of you might not know is the relation between Cortana and Dr. Halsey. Cortana was Halsey’s personal AI – literally. All the AI’s were based off or were copy of another human’s brain. They inherited the features of that person, their voice, emotions, personality and general way of communicating with someone. Now you know why the chief cared so much for Cortana; she was the closest thing to Dr. Halsey he had, and he had promised her safety to the Dr.
The time the game starts is only a few weeks prior to the start of Halo 1. The covanent show up on Reach undetected and before long, a full-scale invasion is underway. Hundreds of millions of people die during the ruthless confrontation and eventually the entire planet gets taken over and later, glassed. Only the UNSC frigate “Pillar of Autumn” captained by “Captain Jacob Keyes” manages to escape the battle with the Chief and Cortana on board.
As per "The Cole protocol" which dictates that if only escape is the only logical choice during a battle against the covanent, the said UNSC frigate should perform a slip-space jump using COMPLETELY random coordinates. The only condition being that those coordinates DO NOT point at the direction of Earth. Doing so, if the covanent even follow that frigate, they'll be following them into unknown space.
After the Pillar of Autmn escapes Reach and initiates The Cole Protocol to perform the slip-space jump, they arrive at an unknown artifact....Halo. Thats where Halo 1 starts.

It is a very emotional, intimate and extremely down-to-earth story as you and the rest of the Noble team desperately try to save the planet. Their attempts at sparking some hope through their heroics are ultimately useless, and the entire struggle they put in…everything goes to waste.
Or does it?
