Okay, I'm at crossroads :p ..

I contacted a few authorized APC dealers (i.e. they are mention on APC's website) and told me that a BRAND NEW 3 KVA online UPS is for 2.8 lakh, and a refurb is for 2 lakh ..

Then I called the contact shared by @HAMMER of THOR, and the guy there said that a BRAND NEW 5 KVA online APC UPS is for 1.45 lakh, and a used/refurb one is for about 80k ...

There is a VAAAAAAAAAAAAAAST difference between the prices here, so something fishy is going on :p

Nothing fishy. Go n get the 80k one.

Apc proper import and all stuff has been expensive since ever.

Buy used apc. Hell for that price buy 2 and keep one spare if something happens to 1st one.

Running two myslef 1 and 1.5kva 4 yrs and going strong. Got one from khi and the other frkm hall road.

Hall road one I got sitting in pindi over olx. Blind without even checking :)

nothing fishy trust me... i got 4 1.5kva ups systems from this fast linx and they are working flawlessly for more than a year now... i got them for 13.5k while the official dealer would give me that for something like 65k brand new... they are also very easy to fix for these guys, if a problem shall ever arise...

Well, I bought the 6KVA Aurora unit for 80-ish if i recall correctly. The dry batteries cost 20k each, 4 batteries amount to 80k.
The whole setup cost me 1.6LAC -ish.
This has run the whole house( excluding fridges, oven etc), 40incher LCD, AVR with 9 speakers, my PC and bunch of other stuff. It doesn't restart my pc when light goes, so im guessing switching time is less than 16ms ( The PSU hold time).

well i bought 3 towers and one desktop... the desktop one was for my computer which i bought back in feb 2013 with two 120AH rocket dry batteries... it has been working flawlessly ever since and it was a used unit from server farms i guess, which get set here cheap... it can handle loads upto 1050W even though it is rated at 980W... the other 3 tower form ups that i have are for house use, as i was tired of those noisy fans and dim lights and what not due to those cheap ups systems with wet batteries. One of those units is at my khala's house with some cheap dry batteries and the other two are at my house with american gel batteries of narada which have a life of upto even 11 years... the desktop unit is quite ugly looking lolz but works fine... the tower versions look brand new with not even a scratch on them(they paint them though)... you are right, as mostly only software problems arise but i never mess those things as i don't need to... it can also hold its own against a little fluctuation from wapda(not extreme ones which are common nowadays so a stabilizer might be needed but even without it the ups will not let fluctuations harm your stuff)

What about Deutche Power brand ? Their 6 KVA online UPS is for about 1.8 lakh and is sold through an authorized distributor .. Although I don't have any experience with this brand ..
Like I said this brand is not deutche in any way, it's a chinese rebrand made to look like german. Stay away.

Got a few questions ..

So I've decided to buy a brand new APC from an APC authorized reseller .. Yes I'll be spending about 1 lakh extra, but I'd rather not buy a refurb because the definition of 'refurb' is different for everyone selling one :)

1) So anyways, first question is, is there a way to *confirm* directly from APC, that the UPS you're buying is in fact, brand new ? ... Like maybe enter the serial number on their website and it tells that it was registered to such and such reseller in Pakistan on such n such date, etc .. ?

2) Also how do would claim warranty if I ever need to ? Is there a central APC service center which I can go to, or do I claim the warranty directly from the reseller who sold me the UPS ?

3) And what's the difference between 'Select Partner' and 'Registered Partner' ? Authorized resellers on APC's website are categorized between these two, and I don't know what's the difference between them ..

You should ask these questions from the guy selling you all this. Afterall they r selling new so support must be there.

Remember one thing this ups may not work directly on external batteries. As the one so called refurbs are modified to charge a bit differently and at same time utilize external wet or dry batteries.

So do your research well before spending money. The builtin batteries wont give u more than 10 to 20 mins backup depending on system load. Thats OK if you have a generator to kick in later.

Just my two cents....buy two refurb units in price of 1.

These genuine apc units are very tough machines and refurbs doesnt mean its going to harm ur equipment.

People have run AC units on this and other high mission critical stuff.

Make sure you dont buy a chinese made APC unit have heard bad things about those from a guy who repairs apc units. Not sure how true that is but just to sharr his thoughts.

Cheers

I was just chatting with APC Sales, and they said that the warranty period that the reseller should be offering you is 2 years for both the UPS AND its batteries, and that I should avoid the reseller if he's not offering this.

I contacted a bunch of authorized APC resellers the other day, an NO ONE was offering anyhing more than a year of warranty for the batteries, with most offering only 6 months .. :/

These guys replace batteries with second grade and then increase their margins. short cuts are common in our land.

Try looking at what big organization's IT guys use and from where they procure.

My work place is now using LG solar panels with large battery bank and some high end ups. I know its not apc. Will try and check what make n type they have.

Post these questions on wired pakistan site lots of engineers there. Might get more details.

Okay, bumping this thread after 2 weeks now .. Done a considerable amount of research, but still haven't bought anything ..

Have a question ... Does anyone know what's the main difference (if any) between these two models ? SRC3000XLI and SURTD3000XLI ? .. Both are 3kva and seem to have identical specs apart from some very minor differences, however the former is about 70k ~ 100k cheaper than the latter .. Furthermore, the SRC series is also the newer series which is supposed to replace the older SURT series (according to resellers here) .. So it doesn't make sense ..

I was wondering if anyone here has experience in buying an 'Online' UPS ? I'm in the market for a 6 KVA one, but don't know which brand to buy and from where (I'm from Islamabad) .. They're the most expensive kind of UPS's, so I want to buy something that will last a long time .. Any suggestions are welcome .. I need one for my Home Theater room which contains all imported high-end equipment ..
We bought 2x 7.5kva Online UPS's for the gaming zone back in 2012. I think the name was Cosmos and they were really high quality. We used to run 19x Xbox 360's, 18x 23" LED Screens, 2x PS3's and 3x Samsung Plazma screens on each while 8x Gaming PC's with 500w PSU's and 20" LED's + a reception computer and all lights in the hall on the 2nd UPS. Never had any trouble except the batteries needed to replace after 1.5 years. We were running 4x 200ah's AGS Batteries on each UPS so total were 8 Batteries. We never encountered any restart or shutting off on any of the UPS during any black outs even when everything was running.

They UPS company have office in DHA T-Block Commercial Area in Lahore and at the time both UPS's with 8 Batteries cost approx. 4.5 lacs but the last time I called them in September and asked the rate for same model UPS the price of a single UPS went up to Rs. 180000/- back in 2012 it was I guess around 150000/-

You reap what you sow. This is what happens when you take away choice from consumers. Even with 88% split going to developers, they can't recoup costs. Meanwhile, Helldivers 2 is a massive hit for Sony thanks in big part to Steam.
