Finished The Cuckoo's Calling by J.K. Rowling, her second book written after the amazing Harry Potter series. She wrote this under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith as she wanted no preconceived notions and hype. This is a pretty straight forward murder mystery/detective novel. The story is set in London, and shown through the eyes of P.I. Cormoran Strike, former military, now missing a leg and a particular fondness for alcohol. The novel follows how Strike goes about the whole case, his workings, his methods, the problems he faces, etc. It also focuses on Strike's personal turmoils.
This is a pretty straight forward book, narrative wise but what makes it a very swift read is the usual charm and fluidity that Rowling brings in her books. She has a way with words and it is at full display here. She has always been good with mapping out colorful characters and her knack for it is visible. The book is full of diverse and amazing characters. Even those that are minor, having only one or two appearances are memorable. The central murder mystery is interesting enough to keep you hooked and it becomes all the more interesting as you try to figure out the clues with the information as Strike receives it.
All in all, a very good read and for fans of Detective Novels, this is a sure bet.
