I'm starting on Historical Fantasy now. Partly because I want to write one and partly because I love fantasy. Starting with Bridge of Birds by Barry Hughart. Anyone have any recommendations in this genre? Blastwave ?

Animal Farm >>> George Orwell.

One of the most brilliant books i've ever read.Highly recommend it.

About the book:
Animal Farm is set on an English farm named Manor Farm, owned by Mr. Jones. The fable-like story concerns the rebellion of the farm animals, and is told entirely from their point of view. The story opens with Mr. Jones stumbling into bed, unable to lock up the farm properly after a night of excessive whisky drinking. Old Major, the venerable and well-respected pig, has called all the animals together for a meeting to take place after Mr. Jones has gone to bed, and they gather outside the big barn on the farm. Old Major tells them all that he had a miraculous dream last night, in which he saw his approaching death, and also understood more clearly the life of animals. He wants to impart his realizations to the rest of the animals while he still can, as well as rouse them to take the action that he has come to feel is necessary.

Big Rock Candy Mountain.
Reading a bit of American classic lit nowadays.

Read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. It's a classic, so I read it just to read it. It was okay. I understand at that time it was a revolutionary novel with it's use of cultural dialect, and it's racially controversial plot. The character development was great. And Twain is just a great writer with good command of the language.

Finished The Cuckoo's Calling by J.K. Rowling, her second book written after the amazing Harry Potter series. She wrote this under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith as she wanted no preconceived notions and hype. This is a pretty straight forward murder mystery/detective novel. The story is set in London, and shown through the eyes of P.I. Cormoran Strike, former military, now missing a leg and a particular fondness for alcohol. The novel follows how Strike goes about the whole case, his workings, his methods, the problems he faces, etc. It also focuses on Strike's personal turmoils.

This is a pretty straight forward book, narrative wise but what makes it a very swift read is the usual charm and fluidity that Rowling brings in her books. She has a way with words and it is at full display here. She has always been good with mapping out colorful characters and her knack for it is visible. The book is full of diverse and amazing characters. Even those that are minor, having only one or two appearances are memorable. The central murder mystery is interesting enough to keep you hooked and it becomes all the more interesting as you try to figure out the clues with the information as Strike receives it.

All in all, a very good read and for fans of Detective Novels, this is a sure bet.

it is awesome...one of the most imaginative, shocking and inspired work of our times...martin has captured all the political intrigue and fratricide and betrayals of the middle ages and turned it into a fantasy epic of gigantic proportions...i am in love with this series..book 6, it can't come soon enough..

There are so many to go for. One of the great delights of this series is the vast array of amazing characters.
My favorites are: Tyrion (by far, he has the best lines after all), Robb, Jaime, Littlefinger, Arya, Tywin, Davos

Starting from Agatha Christie would be a great idea. She is the queen of detective fiction. I got hooked on books due to Miss Christie (and Jeffrey Archer). My favorites of Christie are:

1. And Then There Were None
2. Crooked House
3. Death on the Nile
4. Dumb Witness
5. Five Little Pigs
6. Hickory Dickory Dock
7. Murder in the Mews
8. Poirot’s Last Case: Curtain
9. The ABC Murders
10. The Secret of Chimneys
11. The Seven Dials Mystery

Khalid Hosseini does it again. I loved The Kite Runner, and though I did not fall overtly in love with Thousand Splendid Suns,I did find it an interesting read. But with this third book, Hosseini has stirred the strings of my heart like no other book of his. The book is told through multiple perspectives, covering more or less 60 years in the life of a group of people who are connected, closely and remotely. The human element takes centre stage, as there is little of story. It's the decisions that a person makes that effect many lives. It is so hard to think of the consequences of your actions at the time when you make the decision, it is virtually impossible to see how things will pan out. Things you do with noble motives yield less than desirable results. How these decisions ripple through the ages, this makes up for this grand novel. Grand in the sense of a rich cast of characters. No less than 9 people narrate the story at different points, as information pertaining to these people is revealed bit by bit. I loved this book. It grappled me. It made me feel real again (as sappy and cheesy as it sounds). It made me think about the fragile nature of humanity. This is Babel for the literary world. Must, must read.

It's not something you can force onto yourself. If you like reading, you will learn to make time for it. If you don't like reading, then that's that.

Bought "And then there was no one". What a read. I never knew i'd be totally hooked to it. What a brilliant story. Totally Epic. Just Wow.

Ending was the strangest. No one could've solved the mystery. Thanks again for suggesting this book.

Now gonna buy "Crooked House" in the next week. Also gonna download the movie.

I never read a complete novel. This was my 2nd one. 1st one was Sherlock Holmes.

Exactly. The ending of And Then There Were None was the best part. Totally blew me away. Glad you liked it. Agatha Christie is a great gateway if you want to cultivate the habit of reading. Crooked House is amazing as well but my personal 2nd favorite of Agatha is The ABC Murders.

I know I am coming to this novel a little late. It had its moment. But I heard that Mitch Albom had a new book coming and I wanted to read that. So I thought before I go this that book I should read the book that made him famous.
This book is melodramatic, emotional, tear-jerking, and cheesy. It hits home on several points. The plot device is essentially in the title, and it is a good take on spirituality and life's meaning. I think this is Albom's own fantasy of how heaven should be, or rather what he would like it to be. The life you lead is strife with questions and you can't expect all the answers in your lifetime. But what if the answers await you when your life is over? Do you find comfort in the thought that after all your life had meaning or do you bemoan the fact that you missed it while you were alive?

Anywho, this is a good book. Well written, well chalked out characters, some lines that read good on paper but might appear schmaltzy if you say them out loud, but I guess that is where the written word differs from the spoken word. The book is definitely worth a read. It is short, so newbies who want to develop a love for literature can easily digest it and it would be a good meal.
