South Africa's first black president and anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela has died at the age of 95.

Mr Mandela led South Africa's transition from white-minority rule in the 1990s, after 27 years in prison for his political activities.

He had been receiving intensive medical care at home for a lung infection after spending three months in hospital.
Announcing the news on South African national TV, President Jacob Zuma said Mr Mandela was at peace.
"Our nation has lost its greatest son," Mr Zuma said.
"Although we knew that this day would come, nothing can diminish our sense of a profound and enduring loss."

Mr Zuma said Mr Mandela - who is known affectionately by his clan name, Madiba - had died shortly before 21:00 local time (19:00 GMT). He said he would receive a full state funeral, and flags would be flown at half-mast.
Crowds have gathered outside the house where Mr Mandela died, some flying South African flags and wearing the shirts of the governing African National Congress, which Mr

One of the most influential and important figure of modern history. His death is a great loss to humanity. Mandela was the perfect example of someone who bore years of hardship and struggle but never compromised on his principles.

Not the thread for this sort of discussion but ANC's terror attacks bore lots of similarities to what has transpired in our own country over the past decade. In short, it was tit for tat.

But of course some countries would label one party "terrorist" whilst letting the original perpetrators go scot free. :)

Can't believe I haven't read Mandela' autobiography "Long Walk to Freedom" yet. Must pick it up at the earliest. Heard it's lengthy and not the most well-written of books but very inspirational in spirit.

That's how it goes man, It's all about prepective and what you own views are, during the time when ANC was put on the terror list Racism was a big issue in the U.S as well. I'm glad things have changed though and we only have men like Mandela and Martin Luther King Jr. to thank for it.

He did compromise in the end. He let the whites keep control over the economy in exchange for political rights for the blacks. Even today they retain economic power and as a result unemployment among blacks is very high in South Africa.

He lived 95 years and achieved what he could, during his time. And as we know that these days, no one lives forever and by saying that, I wouldn't say that "his death was great loss to humanity". Being bedridden due to his lung problem isn't exactly living and when it's your time to go, then it's your time to go.

Anyways, U2 for Mandela!
