Brother I think what you mean is that your khala has suffered a hemorrhagic stroke. That is when a blood vessel ruptures in the brain and sudden bleeding occurs. When this occurs then there is no DEFINITIVE or urgent treatment. Like any bruise that develops on any part of our body, you can consider it as a sort of bruise in the brain and it will only settle down with passage of time. SO it is During this time if the patient is unable to breath due to significant brain injury, he is kept on ventilator, kept on NG tube feedings and all sorts of supportive treatment is given. Please note that nothing can be done once the bleed has occurred and all treatments there on-wards are supportive just to give brain time to relax and recover with time. This includes BP control, nutrition, anti epileptics etc. How much recovery will occur and to what extent is highly highly variable so it is difficult to predict it.
Inside the brain there are a few water tanks that contain clear fluid. It is known as C.S.F and acts to cushion the brain. It is produced and gradually absorbed by brain itself. But In-case the Bleed has extended in to these water tanks then there is a high probability that the blood will stop the absorption process leading to accumulation of fluid inside the brain. This will cause the brain to swell up. Since the Brain is surrounded by a HARD skull, there is NO where for brain to swell or expand into, hence it will push down and cause death by spinal cord compression. Therefore it is IN THESE circumstances a surgery is done to drain the brain fluid externally by means of an EVD. This is by far the only indication for surgery in patients with stroke. Again, the surgery will not control the bleeding, nor it will heal anything. The brain will heal with time on its own, but the surgery would reduce the brain pressure giving it time to relax and recover.
Now the problem is that elderly patients suffer from stroke. Once the patient is put on ventilator for more than 3-4 days then the patient tends to develop Ventilator associated Pneumonia, or other hospital acquired infections. All these tend to make the prognosis poor.
Please, Do not take as if I am trying to scare you or anything. But I just want to explain that you need to be patient and pray. If possible do share the MRI pictures of her. I might be able to guide you better. And please, do not think about shifting her to another hospital. The process of shifting itself would be life threatening and it is almost to impossible to find ICU beds in hospitals.
