Finished. Surprisingly short game if you don't do much of the side stuff.
Obligatory post-credits scene to reassure everyone that a bigger threat exists and that a sequel is on the way (hopefully not lol).
Mass Effect: Andromeda is a game with a few decent ideas, but ultimately poor execution in nearly every area. Here's a breakdown of my impressions:
What works
- Atmosphere: manages to retain the feel of western-styled space opera
- Exploration: traversing the varied and large planets isn't half bad, and it helps that the Nomad is mechanically easy to maneuver
- Skill progression: character classes, customization, and ability trees
- Gameplay mechanics: vertical and horizontal thrust lend some mobility and verticality to combat encounters
What doesn't work
- Story: B-grade plot devices, B-grade character development, B-grade dialogues
- Gameplay mechanics: awkward character movement, platforming, and a poorly implemented dynamic cover system
- Camera: unnecessarily zooms in too close to your character during combat; becomes annoying when you need to do some light platforming mid-combat
- Hit reactions: or the lack thereof
- Animations: it isn't just Addison's face that's tired
- Scanning: useless, one-dimensional, tacked-on mechanic
- Enemy AI: easy to confuse and often braindead when approached from the rear
- Multiplayer netcode: awful, just awful
The negatives outweigh the positives, and hence this gets a 6/10 from me.
TL;DR Mass Effect: Andromeda is the Resident Evil 6 of the current generation.
