Hey everybody,

This is something that belongs in the TIFU section on reddit but here goes

I bought a used macbook pro (Ivy bridge 2012) around two weeks ago. I bought it off some unassuming dude with an ad on olx. We meet on temple road. Laptop seemingly is in good exterior condition, I give it a superficial check and pay close to 70k for it. The seller, gives me a 2 day check warranty written on a cnic copy, that states that the laptop was never opened or repaired and is in absolute genuine condition.

Stupid me (I know), uses laptop without having it inspected by a technician. Use it sparsely for a week.

Now, A week goes by, and it starts giving various issues. They keep on exacerbating to the point where the display just wouldn't show up on boot. I went and had it looked by the technician, and lo and behold, the laptop has been completely repaired from the inside and outer body parts are replaced too. I called up the guy yesterday, and he refuses to acknowledge the repair work. Instead, he goes on to blame me and keeps jogging me through the 2 Day 'check' warranty and that it ceased to be his responsibility after the specified period.

If it's not clear yet, I've been swindled off 70k and have no clue what to do next. I bitter taste about the whole affair and really pissed at the lying sack of shit.

Would really appreciate any help or suggestions people have to offer over my next move should be. Ideally I'd like my money to be returned and the laptop returned to the seller.

Do you guys think I have a legal case, given the item condition was misrepresented?

Thanks in advance.

Its obviously your fault since you failed to inspect it properly despite having 2 days check warranty. All you can do now is pray and hope the laptop gets repaired again.

Yes I know, that I was careless for not having it inspected on time. But do you think since the item was misrepresented and told to be genuine, when it wasn't, entitles me to a full refund and return of the item?
I'm banking on the deceitful description of the item to help me out in this situation

Not so legal = Beat the guy up until he gives you your money back, or at least some of the money.

Legal = None. Cause it's OLX that's why.

I wonder why people still use OLX.
I wonder why people are stupid enough to throw 70k out without properly checking and then come rant about it. News flash, we're not living in heaven. There are bad people everywhere willing to rip you off. And if in this day and age you don't know that, then maybe this incident would be a good learning experience.

When I sold my MacBook the guy came to my house and spent a good 2 hours checking the machine.

Also you paid 70k for this? This is at best a 50k laptop.

This happens sometime. Now you cannot sue a claim over that guy as he gave you checking warranty and will refuse to give cash back even if you demand 50k. Now only a way left is to repair it. Buying from shop is more suitable and reliable than trading on olx.

Umm, I appreciate your blunt response. But this isn't a rant, just wondering if there was a way out of the situation. Indeed, I'm going to take this as a learning experience for life.

Crappers. I handed the laptop over to the repair guys, let's see if it can be salvaged in any way

You have friends in police ? Because this "2 Day Checking Warranty" is not a legal thing..this is a scam and fraud, since he lied to you. You took the laptop i.e the 2day warranty comes into the question when he was truthful from the get go.. Go to police tell them this story and see their response. If the person is picking up his phone and you have nic card, have the police question him..ask a lawyer.

I hate these kinda people.

Usually, I feel for those that get scammed or get ripped off in any way.
And I'm with those people during their moment of grieving as well.

But, this, let this be a lesson for you, when you buy something from a place where ads are shabby since the day 1 and where theres no reputation system, You should first, have some safety for your meetup, and second you have to check the item thoroughly as possible and then pay the amount.

Theres nothing you can do in this regard anymore, no legal action as well unless you were actually scammed. (Or wait, you can actually cook this up as a fraud! which it is)

But taking the 2 day check warranty written on a CNIC copy is sort of like a contract which excludes both of the above... .ya know...

That's exactly the kind of response I wanted to hear. And it's kinda accurate. I talked to a lawyer some days ago, he said it's very doable recovering the money back.

best way is to visit your police station and lodged an FIR against him by giving 500rs to mehrar ( person who writes down FIR)
under section 420 and 406 pakistan penal code.
