Multi-millionaire Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson has said he is willing to personally fund a sequel to Double Fine's cult classic Psychonauts.

Double Fine head Tim Schafer has continually stated he would like to develop a second Psychonauts game, but has been unable to secure publisher-funding to back the project.

"Let's make Psychonauts 2 happen," Notch tweeted to Schafer earlier this morning.

"Also, I'm serious," Notch then confirmed in a tweet to Eurogamer sister site Rock Paper Shotgun, from whose article he had spotted recent comments by Schafer on the future of Psychonauts (originally published on Digital Spy).

Psychonauts was first released in 2005 to positive reviews but disappointing sales. Double Fine recovered the rights to the game's publishing proceeds last year. Since then, the digital PC version has been seen a substantial update via Steam, and a new Mac version has been launched.
Make it happen!

It literally just happened, you want press conferences after a day of tweets? They're indie developers, this is about as official as it gets. I'm not getting my hopes up or anything but there's a good chance it could actually happen.

Happened last night actually, I was on reddit at like 6-7PM and the tweet (original posted above) of Notch was linked in and was only < 1 hour old, So it's at least been a few hours or so. And I never said I want a press conference or something immediately, I was just saying that the twitter exchange is still going on and none of them have commented on anything other than the game being called "Psychonotch".

While I am happy that Psychonauts is getting a lot of love I still wish a lot of Lucasarts classics get the same treatment =(

[h=2]Notch Was 'Semi-Joking' About Funding Psychonauts 2

Last week Marcus "Notch" Persson sent the gaming community a flutter by offering to fund a Psychonauts sequel.

It turns out the Minecraft creator wasn't so serious after all, despite declaring, "I'm serious".

Before we get to Notch's pseudo-reversal, a quick refresher:

The timing of his offer couldn't have been poorer, as in subsequent hours Double Fine began obliterating Kickstarter records in support of their point-and-click Double Fine Adventure.

A week and nearly two million public dollars later, Notch says he was, "semi-joking" and that, "the budget for doing a Psychonauts 2 is three times higher than my initial impression."

He took to his tumblr today with a full de-briefing of the situation. I offer it here, without judgment.
Hype!

So in an interview, Double Fine lead Tim Schafer mentioned that they wanted to make Psychonauts 2 happen, but that nobody had been willing to fund it so far. Being a big fan of the first one, and thinking a sequel could probably be profitable, I semi-jokingly tweeted Tim about me funding a sequel.
And then the internet exploded. (Or at least my inbox did)
And then Double Fine did their highly successful kickstarter.

Here are the facts of what’s happening now, from my perspective:

* Tim and I haven’t spoken much at all other than a couple of emails.
* We mentioned meeting at GDC, I hope that will happen
* I assume Double Fine will be very busy for many months with the kickstarter project
* The budget for doing a Psychonauts 2 is three times higher than my initial impression
* A couple of other parties have mentioned also being interested in investing in it
* I would not be investing in this as a charity. It would be because I think the game would be profitable
* And naturally, I wouldn’t want to have any creative input in the game. It would be purely a high risk investment in a project I believe in.

I have NO idea if this is actually going to happen. The kickstarter stuff obviously changes the playing field a lot. Investing that incredibly high amount of money also requires a lot of planing and discussion, and I’ve never done anything like that before, but I do have contacts and advisors to help me out.
All I know is that IF the numbers work out and IF they still want to do it and IF they don’t decide to self fund a sequel by doing more crowd funding (which is honestly what I would’ve done if I were them), I would be most interested in doing this type of investment.

Point is, stop hyping over this, internet! You’re going to scare me into doing things secretly instead of being open and transparent via twitter. I am incredibly scared of the very real risk of people feeling let down just because I took a chance at something that doesn’t end up panning out.
Also, I realize you won’t stop hyping, so I’ll just go into hiding for a few years if it falls through.

BTW, i started Ghost of Tsushima, and it got me hooked within the first couple of minutes. I already know It's gonna be a memorable experience. This is how you make a proper Samurai game. Not that SJW game Ubisoft is making.

That's still higher than it's total play length. A 5 hour campaign for a $50 game is downright scammy.

Consoles were my main platform ever since Atari 2500. But now I think it's not worth it as PC especially with DLSS deliver far smoother performance. AW2 on console didn't even had ray tracing and ran below 30fps. Similar issues plagues DD2 on consoled.
The cross gen era really made people think 60fps would be a new standard lol

Welp, done with Hellblade 2. Thoroughly disappointed. Such a nothing burger after the unique experience of the first game.

I have a PS5 but I am not satisfied with the experience. I am currently saving for a 4080 64 GB rig soon. Bit will wait for Pro if performance improves. This gen has been so bad I don't plan on buying consoles anymore for AAA gaming.

It is indeed the worst generation by far.

Both PS and Xbox have been a flop this gen as they can barely maintain 30 fps in a lot of AAA games th.

  • L LegacyGamerGuy:
As per WCCF Tech review, Xbox Series X doesn't even maintain a consistent FPS and sometimes drops into the mid-20fps range. That's unacceptable, tbh.

Gradually transitioning from console gaming to PC as the games are not worth it. 6 hours of Hellblade 2 is just not worth the $50 price tag.
Score 1 for game pass. I wouldn't pay full price for this at retail either.

Just downloaded my first legit digital PC game on GoG at a discount of $8: Two Point Hospital. The same team behind Theme Hospital Two Point Studios now part of Sega. And I am having more fun than most recent AAA games except of course BG3.

Still, I don't like either Sony or Microsoft as they are focusing more on corporate greed than delighting customers. PC gaming is best of gaming and worth every penny.

PC Gamer score of 58/100 for Hellblade 2??? Is it really worse than Gollum that was 64/100? Microsoft games can't even come close to high scores of Sony exclusives apparently.

About the Microsoft (and Sony) debate, I feel both have become too greedy and losing their minds over corporate greed. Personally, I will never buy any console next gen and switch to PC gaming where democracy reins.
