@ Blatwave Get jealous of Karachi? That city maybe good on a lot of fronts, specially the availability of anything imaginable, but damn...it is filthy.

My exact same reaction when I moved from Islamabad to Karachi. I'd honestly move back any day of the week.

Who the hell says that there's just one KFC in Islamabad or Pizza-Hut or Dunkin donuts or Rahat bakery for that matter?

Please don't try to presume to know stuff if you don't know about it already. You can even google it to find out.
So how many KFC are their in Islamabad?

Karachi is filthy?

Ooh look the bad man is spitting pan on the roads ew how gross

Maybe filthy. But the areas are getting cleaner. And it is sort of fun. Karachi has all sorts of people. From the Mailay (lower class) to the Burgers (elite class).

People should for once stop thinking about themselves.

very true but still some people think we sleep early
occasionally i personaly vist f7 at about 12 in the night

At midnight, going for a drive throughout the Margalla-Road is amazing. And of course what do other people know (its like they've never even seen the real-isb if thats what they think).

And there was one guy who was complaining for no good breakfast? Looks like he never visited 'Rana Market', the oldest place and giving the best "Halwa-poori and Chana".

A little dirty and dusted yes but NOT filthy.

Not since Mustafa Kamal!

Karachi is nice and clean for the most part compared to any metropolis.

I mean Its almost scary that Saddar area is now clean and the absence of trash, junk and crap,. which is very odd looking.

Similarly every place where you have to work, have fun or hang out in Karachi is C-L-E-A-N!

The biggest issue however is still the lack of common decency, etiquette and manners. Spitting Paan, throwing away used items on the road and generally any form of wall chalking is just plain wrong

AND SHOULD BE PUNISHABLE BY DEATH!

Karachi is dirty?

Really?
I find Lahore a tad dirtier, but enjoyable nonetheless.
If you're talking about pollution, I'd say both cities are equally polluted, and Islamabad hands down between the three.
If you're talking about dust, I'd say Lahore is dustier. The loose soil that makes you sneeze. But then again, there has been roads + underpass constructions going on for the past 3-4 years that has contributed a lot to this. In the past 10 years, there was one such phase in Islamabad where there were underpasses and roads being built, and it was equally dusty then.
If you're talking about dirty roads, I'd day Lahore has cleaner (and non-red) roads :p
If you're talking about dump trashes, and waste carelessly trashed along roads etc(Lahore has developed much in the past 4 years and very few such places remain), I'd say Lahore and Karachi both are equally bad.

But then again, the last time I went to Karachi was when I moved to Lahore; 5 years ago. Wow. Time flies. A lot could have changed of the Karachi I know from 4-5 years ago.

Karachi has evolved in the past few years and the roads are NOT that red! Either with blood OR Paan.

Khair.

Between ISB and LHR

Lahore is still the natural choice for any sensible person :p

I don't know what the fuss is all about. I just read the 12 pages. God. I can't facepalm myself and the fanboy (I don't think the term is correct for the cities, but couldn't find a suitable alternative) and biased decisions.

There's not rocket science involved.

Both cities have enough food places to cater your needs. The real choice breaks down to friends and family.
Since I have ALL my maternal AND paternal immediate relatives in Lahore, and the rest (very few nonetheless) abroad, I'd probably never go to Islamabad just because 'it's mean temperature throughout the year is 2C less', unless I don't have a choice.
Friends, you can make new ones, so that's not much of a problem.

I don't know about today's Islamabad, but last years was hostile towards me. It was as if someone of lower caste has stepped infront of them. Was pissed at their attitude and promised myself to not bother with them.

Coming back to food places. Firstly, HOW much can you eat? It's not like you'll be eating out every freaking day. Lets just say you'll be eating once in a blue moon.
Both cities offer enough top notch outing spots and food places for me to stay just on the line between the two.
Islamabad has Papasalis that I wish was in Lahore, and once specially went to Isl with friends just to have it. Watched two movies at Cinepax, and came back the same day. Yes. mental, I know. Then you've got H Block in Lahore, which has literally everything you can ask for. There's Bundu Khan that I absolutely love, second only to the Karachi wala BBQ Tonight. (The Lahore one isn't of similar quality. The food quality and management here sucks). There's Minaal in Islamabad, and there's Cuckoos in Lahore. Then you come to the more 'expensive' and 'elite' price bracket of food. There's M.M. Alam road, with practically every(of those in Pakistan), good, top quality multinational food chain. From Hardees to Mc Donalds, to KFC to Dominoes to Pizza Hut to CTC to Gloria Jeans. There isn't one place here (the road) that you'd not find worthy enough to eat at, let alone 'try' it. Then comes Islamabad. For me, there's nothing I'd die to see in Islamabad, had I been a resident here, that was in Lahore. Yeah, there are a few, call it 'exclusives', but then again, it's not like you'll eat out daily, right? I love to eat, and for me, having each and every damn food multinational/regional outlet in my city is not a deciding factor. I couldn't care less. It's not as if there isn't really anything to eat other than that ONE particular thing.

Then comes the entertainment. This is one aspect where Islamabad lacks variety. There's only so much you can do with long, clean roads, good atmosphere and that sort of argument. On the contrary, Lahore has loads and loads to offer. There's a gaming cafe, practically within 1km radius of you almost everywhere. There's good quality cinemas, 3d cinemas, good 'date' spots, if you're the type :p, good historical places to visit, there's a vast variety of clubs, there's one or two water parks (pretty awesome ones), there are places of historical importance (old colleges if you're the architecture type, Minar e Pakistan, Badshahi Masjid etc, there's paint ball and there are joylands. There are museums, and there's the Wagha change of guard ceremony. There's the awesome Safari Park where you drive through the park and all types of wild animals are surrounding you (tigers, lions). Yes. They are open. For the first time I realized how massive a tiger is.. There's one of Pakistan's best zoo (much more developed now by the way) and there's concerts. Every big thing comes to Lahore, then goes to Karachi and then Islamabad. It'll eventually reach one of the big three, but, why bother :p. There's Fortress Stadium, where a walk with a coffee in one hand and family in the other is a must in the cool winters. There's a red light district too, incase you're interested in 'that' kind of entertainment :p
There are parks. Lots of them, and there are football fields where there's a match going on every 'season', i.e holidays. [Yes, ladies and gentlemen, an English League type system is also created. Every week some 10-15 'clubs' of various accords, with players bonded with loyalty more than money play.].. If you have enough friends who play football, you can enter that and enjoy summers playing too. Mind you, they have very good players. The Pakistan under 21 and under 18 team players from Lahore almost all play there]. Then there's X-Park. Something sensational. Although there was something like this in Karachi too, I remember, but this is just amazing. Have a look at their website.

The only conclusion I can fetch is that there is not enough demand in Islamabad of such activities for the people to make a feasible investment into this area/sector; entertainment targeting the youth.
And, you are bound to make loads of friends, and find people you'll adjust into without any problems in Lahore. Even foreveraloneguy made friends in Lahore. Girlfriends are another topic :p

BUT

If you aren't the social guy, who wants to hang out with friends, and enjoy entertainment spots with friends, and are the guy who likes to live in peace, tranquility, without 'giving a f*ck about the others', occasionally watching movies, or eating out with family and stuff like that, go on for long drives on the open roads, and be happy without socialization, Islamabad is the perfect place.

Concluding, I'd say it's YOU who has to choose what type of environment suits you and not US who will assist you with the city to live in, as it is more of a personal preference than others opinions. The opinions are bound to only confuse you make the decision even more.

Oh, and those saying all parts of Lahore are dirty, roads are dirty and what not.. I'll ask you that in 3 years. Lahore is in the transformation phase, something that Islamabad has been through over the past umpteen years, and has now become the city it is. With the rate of infrastructural and road development, Lahore is headed towards a much much better road and traffic future. If only the Pakistani mentality and IQ of the drivers could proportionately advance too.

And if you're a peace lover, yet social person, and can shell out on enough petrol, the Phase 8(?) in Defense, near Ring Road (which btw is freaking awesome. From one corner to another in minutes + good road) is the place to be.

So if the metropolis is clean, the rest doesn't matter? Dude, I have told you, I have been to the dirtier parts of all the cities, including Isb, but nothing beats Karachi. NOTHING.

^ You Karachi fan-boys are freaking weird. A lot of my family is from Lahore, but, you would never see me get fan-boyish over it. Heck, I don't even like ISB. As I said earlier, all cities have pros and cons. Just advising someone on basis of personal, one-sided love is pretty strange to me. And food spots are THE WORST thing you people could have picked. No body chooses cities based on how many fast food chains it has...I mean, really? That's so childish.

What you people could have said, was that how affordable the food basic items are. How decent the vegetable market is... so on and so forth. All I have read through out these 12 pages, are comments from kids who want to eat a burger, and that's the only thing they want when they go to a city. Come on...

See! Even you agree!

^ Not really. That one was a fact. There are farms in Karachi that use human refuse as khaad. You have probably never heard of it, I don't know why, because several of my acquaintances have been there themselves and use germ killing chemical tablet on vegetables to wash away the germs. The doctor advised me to do it, when I went to MH with a giant ass stomach ache.

Anyways, let's keep karachi out of the discussion, because the absent OP never asked for it.
