Played the demo. Its alright. I found the trailer very ordinary... but seems like this might turn out to be a decent game. Nothing OMG amazing. Looks and plays ALOT like Lost Planet 2...so if you liked that gameplay (LP) you're most probably gonna like this too. At first sight its hard to differentiate between the two games. But I'm sure the story and varied characters will set this apart from LP2.
You play as Ryder, member of the RDA (Resource Development Agency). The story is running parallel to the events in the movie, instead of it being a direct recreation of the movie events. No cut scenes in the short demo.
You destroy the huge rock formation to clear out way for your team by firing missiles from your chopper...and jump into the action right away. Like the chopper, you can control vehicles in the game and even a heavy armored robot thing (like in FEAR 2). You can assign 4 weapons to the available slots at a time. Weapon selection is generic, ranging from a pistol, assault rifle, grenade launcher and a flame thrower. You unlock upgraded variations of the same weapons as you earn more XP which yield more damage and stuff. The dynamic flame system is decent. You can set parts of forest on fire using the flame thrower (like in Far Cry 2). There are also 4 slots where you can assign special Skills you earn by collection XP like calling in air strikes or blending in with the environments. Theres a reasonable amount of variety... although none of it is new. Similarly, you can upgrade your armor as well.
There are day and night cycles in the game as well. Flashlight attachment to your weapons is automatically switched on at night...even though it rarely helps you navigate. What else.... weapons are okay to shoot. The game was very very easy...but its just a demo. Only encountered a few huge creatures in the game. Instead of developing a strategy to beat them (hitting weak points etc), you can just aimlessly shoot at them til their energy bar drains out. There are stations set throughout the forest which you can use to Teleport back to other parts of the forest. Very useful and welcomed feature instead of driving around to get to your mission objectives.
Graphically, its pretty good by todays standards. Huge set of options in the PC port ranging from low to Ultra High. The screenshots I've posted are on Ultra High settings and 8xAA on DX10. You do need a beefy rig to max it out at 1080p. I'm assuming the console ports aren't running at Ultra High equivalent settings. Played fine for me at those settings but using 4xAA. Looks quite stunning actually at 60fps. I tried 3D Stereoscopic vision as well. Looks great but some awesome battles in the final version might do it justice. This time around, if you have an HDMI cable, 120Hz display and 3D Glasses, you can experience 3D on both consoles (PS3 and Xbox 360) as well.
Looking forward to this one...worth a shot. I have some complains mainly in regards to the story telling and characters. But I won't mention them until the full game is released. I recommend fans looking forward to the movie and people who liked the LP style gameplay to check this out as well.
