[SOLVED] Internet working through Ethernet but not through Wifi

I have been facing a very strange problem for last few weeks. I have 12mbps PTCL vDSL connection and am using Cell-pipe modem with built-in WiFi provided by them.

I get awesome internet speed if I connect my laptop through Ethernet cable but if i connect it through WiFi then following things happen:

1- Internet works like it should; at full speed (occasionally)
2- Internet works but its dead slow (sometimes)
3- internet simply doesn't work like there is no connectivity whatsoever (most of the time - whereas internet is working like charm through Ethernet at the same time)

I thought WiFi of my modem went bad. So I took out my almost brand new D-Link DSL 2730U and connected it with Cell-pipe to make it work like a WiFi modem.

However, exact same things happen even if i connect through D-Link.

The situation is very frustrating. I am seeking help here before going to PTCL. It's certainly not my device's fault and I have not changed any settings either.

Any help in this regard will be highly appreciated.

Firstly try to reset ur device via reset button, most of the times resetting solves many problems. But you may loose ur PTCL vDsl settings on it, either save the settings or ask Ptcl for it after resetting.
2ndly if resetting doesnt help, try to change settings of ur modem in wireless settings. Try different settings, for example changing Channels, changing wireless connectivity to either B/G/N etc. Also make sure the antenna of the modem (if it is external) is not loose or something.
4thly keep other radio wave devices away from router and ur laptop.
If none of this helps, go to PTCL and get it fixed or exchanged.

try to update your wifi Drivers and also enable Xpress technology in modem's wifi settings

According to StrikerX, the CellPipe modem is really old and 802.11n WiFi. Your signal may be inconsistent and you'll face drop outs.
My recommendation:

Disable WLAN and hide the SSID of your Cellpipe modem.
Buy 2,000 rs TP-Link dual antenna router and connect the LAN 4 port of the CellPipe modem to the Blue (WAN) port of the TP-Link router and use that as your WiFi AP.

The chances of both routers malfunctioning are extremely rare.

I think the problem is either in your PC/ Laptop or there's some interference in the 2.4Ghz band.


  1. Are you using a PC or a Laptop?
  2. Which network adaptor do you have installed?
  3. Have you checked on more than 1 computers?
  4. Try running a continuous ping test to the router (e.g. if the IP of the router is 192.168.1.1, type this in command prompt and check your ping times when your connection slows down)

Code:
ping 192.168.1.1 -t


Report back.

Sadly, none worked. Only going to PTCL option is left. Will do it as a last resort.

Cell pipe asks for either update file or an address to download update file from. I have neither of these.

Done already! With both TP Link wifi router and DLink ADSL + Wifi router.

Ok let me clear the situation. I have a laptop and it is connected through ethernet cable and internet works just fine on it. But my other laptop, 4 mobile devices and all other devices connected through wifi are facing issues. If I remove the ethernet from my laptop and connect through wifi then it starts behaving the same way.

If i do this while I'm connecting through ethernet, the results are like "Reply from IP: bytes = 32 time = 1ms TTL = 64". However, if I do this while connected through wifi the following results come after a series of "Request timed out" messages: "Reply from IP: bytes = 32 time = 3585ms TTL = 64". Time varies from 1403 ms to 3585ms. And then timed out messages pop up.

Open it and see what 2.4GHz channel is being used by your neighbors, it's usually Channel 1 or 6. If they are those channels, set your router to use Channel 11 and use 40MHz channel width (that's a bit mean for your neighbors lol but who cares).
Then go to Wireless security, use WPA/WPA2-PSK, set a password and change encryption to AES Only.
NOTE: If you have really old devices, then use TKIP+AES, otherwise just AES is better.
Then go down to security, disable SPI Firewall.
Lastly, reboot your TPLink router.

Forget the network on all devices.
Re-connect and tell me if it works out for you.

Wifi, not modem.

I have changed the channel to 11 and width to 40MHz. Disabled and enabled security features as advised.

It seems to be working fine now. I will report later today if it starts behaving weird again.
