I have this atom netbook, its windows is just not booting. When the windows load screen in there, it hangs for a while, there is blue screen of death and the lappy restarts. Same thing over and over again. It is not even starting in safemode.
I know I would have to install a fresh copy on windows.

So what I want to ask you is: is there anyway I can boot up some windows using a usb and secure my data??

I have heard some people talking about using some other OS like linux.
I would appreciate a step by step solution.

Remove the hard drive and install it in a PC as a secondary drive and copy the data.

I wouldn't recommend the Linux method

Or, you could install Windows on the existing partition. It'll make the old folder Windows.old without dumping anything as such and wont even delete anything.

If the data is encrypt, afaik it can NOT be copied using another Microsoft Windows OS. However, Linux OS can remedy this.

This is risky.

@omarko. Download Ubuntu desktop edition, burn onto a pen-drive and boot from there, select "Try Ubuntu without installing" when it loads you'll be able to see your Windows partitions, just copy whatever you want and logout.

Data isn't encrypted unless you enable it using the BIOS. Well, in most cases.

And yeah. Ubuntu is a great option. Apart from the fact that it's friggin hard to understand. But I guess since it's just to copy the data, it's worth the shot.

I just want to insert the USB, go into a rhythmic motion, copy my data into the USB/external and for the climax I would copy those files into my other PC temporarly until I can install a fresh copy of windows.

I don't want to take out my hard drive.
That Ubuntu sounds easy but I have no idea how to do it and have never used a linux based OS.

HDTune install karo, check how many bad sectors are present on the HDD. This usually happens when there are bad sectors on the HDD.

Ubuntu is very simple and easy too. Download it and put it on a USB and run it. There's an option where you can go into it directly from the USB too, I believe. Do that and copy all the stuff and you're good. Operating once Ubuntu has booting is an ordeal and a massive headache, though.

Ummm... it is a LAPTOP. I don't think I want to take my atom apart unless it is the last resort.

So I made around 7 pendrives with both the latest 11.10 and 10.04 version of Ubuntu.
The laptop detects the usb but when I try to boot it, I get something like:

Could not find kernel image: /casper/vmlinuz

---------- Post added at 06:51 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:50 PM ----------

Any suggestions ? :s
I followed everything as per instructions.

And I downloaded the OS using the alternate torrent links on the official site.

Which version did you selected from dropdown menu (in Universal USB Installer)? Make sure it matches the version you downloaded. e.g. 11.10 for ubuntu-11.10-desktop-i386.iso
And download RapidCRC calculate hashes of ubuntu-11.10-desktop-i386.iso (MD5) and post here.

edit: Please format your thumb drive in FAT32 before using.
