Just noticed I made an error with one of the entries. CNET is credited on Metacritic, but since they don't assign scores, it ought to be excluded from the GoW tally.

That puts RDR2 in the lead.

Never cared much for <insert publication name>'s opinion. This pick reassures that they should continue to be ignored.
The thing with Giantbomb, though, is that they hardly review any games, so it's kind of fair for people to not care about them :p

IGN Spain GoTY is God of War so back to a tie now.

Not only that, but their picks are more questionable than Edge. They chose the PC version of PUBG over Zelda BotW and Horizon Zero Dawn.

Also, they included Red Dead Redemption 2 in their Top Most Disappointing Games as well.

Meanwhile on the full list, God of War has pulled far ahead with a bunch of wins and Spider Man is a genuine third place GoTY winner right now.

Eurogamer GoTY - Tetris Effect

We could have picked one of those surviving bastions of Big Gaming, a God of War or a Red Dead, because the scale of craftsmanship they display is often extraordinary to behold, but our hearts wouldn't have been in it. These games stirred admiration in us, but not passion.

Instead, our choice for game of the year is a game to cut through all this noise and make a nonsense of all this talk. It's a game of utter purity, a contemporary take on a timeless classic, and a genuinely inspiring and uplifting experience. It doesn't care about the zeitgeist, because it is, in itself, the history and the future of video games rolled into one. It's Tetris Effect.
The other game of the year
There were only ever two games in serious consideration for our game of the year: Tetris Effect and Fortnite. But the choice between them was an agonising one. Not because the team was pretty evenly split between them (they appeared the same number of times in our personal top 5s), but because they represented such fascinatingly and utterly different things.

Fortnite is the quintessential 2018 video game, perhaps the best-run live game of all time, where the social experience and the constantly evolving metanarrative become far more important than the fairly simple, if entertaining, game itself. It hardly matters that it is a work of breathtaking corporate opportunism that was originally supposed to be something else (an unholy stew of Minecraft, DayZ and Left 4 Dead). It has already left a huge impact and there's no doubt that it will change how games are made and played in far more meaningful ways than a slew of copycats. Also: we played it together, a lot, and had a ton of fun. Epic, we salute you.

If Fortnite was Eurogamer's second choice, then I really don't care about their opinion.

Also, what the hell is "inspiring and uplifting" about Tetris? Timeless classic, yes, historic and nostalgic, yes, perhaps innovative and immersive in this case, but idk how it could be uplifting (their write up doesn't help with that).

Anyway, choosing Tetris because "it doesn't care about the Zeitgeist" and then literally naming the most popular game as their second pick is quite ironic.

I don't mind Fornite being ranked high. PUBG and Fornite will undoubtedly shape the future of multiplayer games in some form. Call of Duty is more irrelevant today than it has been in several years.

The praise for Tetris has me intrigued though. I wonder if its worth it without VR.

Less immersive without VR, but otherwise the same. It'll also be available on Steam in around 6 months, once the timed exclusivity period with Sony is up. Was the same case with Enhance Games' last title i.e. Rez Infinite.

Geralt's the top tier winner either way :geralt:

Don't worry, GoW will likely pull up ahead again.

Just pointing it out. ;p

Mass Effect 2 lost to RDR back in the day because of these accumulative results too, critics only reviews had ME2 ahead but it still 'lost'.

ME2 lost by all accounts.

Thats just a random dude who has his own set of rules running a blog for convenient compilation. Metacritic only winners just makes more sense.

The Japanese centric site which gave Yakuza its goty made me chuckle. Valkyria Chronicles and Megaman 11 as runner ups :tv:

Meanwhile, RDR2 is still in the lead on the real Goty list.

You reap what you sow. This is what happens when you take away choice from consumers. Even with 88% split going to developers, they can't recoup costs. Meanwhile, Helldivers 2 is a massive hit for Sony thanks in big part to Steam.
