FPS dropping

Assalamulaikum all. I've got this issue with my pc. While playing Team Fortress 2, whenever there are a lot of people around (5+), the fps drop dramatically. Without the people around, I get an average of around 150fps, but then it drops down to the 20s and 30s. Its working fine with other games BFBC2, COD etc. Another thing I noticed is, I've got the msi afterburner's OSD turned on which shows me the temp and gpu usage. While playing other games, the gpu usage is in the late 90s and sometimes even 100%, but while playing TF2, the max gpu usage i get is no higher than 60% and when the fps drop, the gpu usage goes down to 20-30%. I would appreciate any help in this matter because this is getting annoying. Thanks in advance.

The rig in question is a C2D E7200 @ 2.9ghz, 4gb ram, P5KPL-CM, 1GB 4870.

looks to me like a problem with your drivers. download the latest drivers for your GPU

do this :

1.un install drivers
2.reboot into safemode and run driver sweeper
3.reboot into normal mode and install new drivers

@Photographer. I had the latest drivers but still I tried what you suggested. But it didnt work

@Ahsanshah. I've got the latest drivers and I'm playing the Legit TF2. It updates the game automatically whenever there's a new update available.

Btw I previously had a GTS 250 and didnt have this issue. Must be an ati thing. To me, the low gpu usage in tf2 feels as if there's some software related issue and the game is not using the gpu to its full potential. Like I said before, other games use the gpu at over 90%.

nw i think ur tf2 needz the latest patch update...if ur using a legit ver then u should get them automatically otherwise ul hve to search and download the patches urself.

@Ammarmalik. So we're passengers of the same boat I found a command on a site to be entered in the console that supposedly doubles the fps mat_queue_mode 2 but it didnt help much. The jittery motion did reduce but the fps are still dropping

@Journeys end. Like I've mentioned before, my steam automatically updates the game and its been updated with the latest available updates.

maybe the new drivers are buggy. try older ones. (waiting for ati experts to comment on this)

yes its bothering me too that its happening to a game i spend most of my time playing

@Photographer. I've tried 4 of the previous drivers i.e. 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, 10.4 because I too thought the new drivers might have some bugs but it didnt work.

@Abobobilly. Yeah thats very weird. The game I play the most is TF2 and its getting frustrating now.

why dont you try fresh installation of tf2

it happened to me quite long ago (obviously not with tf2) i dont remember the game it started stuttering i had installed it in second partiton, i did everything but no use. until i installed fresh window and installed the game in c.

i dont know if it may be of any use to you but try clean installation of the drivers, game and if not then if you can windows.

The problem has finally been solved. I reinstalled my windows yesterday and the game's working like a charm now. Thank You all for your suggestions.

@Ammar. You should try to reinstall your windows too. Since like me, you also had an nvidia vga previously, the nvidia drivers previously installed might be messing with the ati ones.

regarding GPU usage...in tf2 it doesnt go above 60%... Tf2 is more CPU intensive... i had the low fps issue long back, then i OCed my CPU to 3.2 Ghz n the problem was fine... new gpu drivers for ATi r also out... 10.6
