Barely a year into it and the new Auto Industry Development Policy (AIDP) seems to have begun to yield the intended results: new non-Japanese car brands are coming to the Pakistani market, and the existing ones are forced to invest in new variants and models as well as improve the quality and passenger safety features of their vehicles in line with global standards.

At least three new carmakers plan to enter Pakistan’s market whose size, some analysts believe, will almost double to half a million units by 2025. French Renault was the first carmaker to announce its plan to invest $100m in the Ghandhara Nissan plant to bring its brand into the country’s market. South Korean companies — Hyundai and Kia — followed the French carmaker, announcing their intentions to stage a comeback in collaboration with reputable local industry giants — Nishat Group and Younus Brothers — with deep pockets. Now the German Audi is also said to have approached the Board of Investment through its local authorised dealer with a proposal to start an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) plant here. Pakistan being the 6th largest populated country, with half of its population below 30 years and car penetration as low as 13 vehicles per 1,000 persons, offers a huge potential for growth to global carmakers

it sounds all good but it depends on what kind of cars we would be getting. I mean, in europe and americas, audi's a3 is a hatchback with a 2.0L engine but i read an article early Q2 last year that audi plan to turn the hatchback into a full saloon and change the engine to a smaller 1.2L and it would cost half a mill more than the most expensive honda. i am probably just ranting here but would people be really that dumb to buy an underpowered car because its an audi.

Its the same story of why honda motorcycles redesigned their CG125 engine in the 80s, after doing their market research they found out that people here dont bother about routine maintenance so the redesigned engine didnt require as much maintainance as the older CB125. My point being would it be really good value for our money or would it be just a dick measuring contest.

EDIT
The car i was talking about were diesel models and after some info gathering have found out that smaller engines are offered only in petrol down to 1.0L.

I've been reading a lot about VolkWagen coming to PK. That'll be really nice considering how many other car brands VW owns.
I know Audi, Porsche, BMW and Mercedes all have their showrooms in Karachi, but is our market even that competitive in the price range these cars will be going for?

Guys at volkswagen are smart, and they've probably done their homework. They won't try and enter a market without proper research. They might start offering Jetta here to tackle civic and corolla altis, or they might target the higher end segment. Only time will tell.

If they move assembly / building plant here, then that would mean something, since w.r.t prices they will be able to somewhat compete with suzuki / honda / toyota .

I think they can do that if they want to. They're not a small manufacturer. yeh deko-
Volkswagen To Launch T6 & Amarok Cars in Pakistan Soon
These vehicles, if priced right, can be a hit in local market. I've been hearing all the fud of VW entering the market since 2015. There are definitely some factors that are keeping them away from the market.
However, I don't understand why people don't import VW cars like they do with other German & Japanese cars these days. Could be because of their perception of VW beetle aka Foxy :p

I dont think German and Japanese cars are comparable w.r.t how many people get theirs imported. I believe with German cars (Audi, BMW, Opel, VW Merc, Porsche, etc ), since because even their basic and smallest hatchbacks start from 2.0 , and the taxes are dependent on engine size, the prices can be relatively high. Also because getting them shipped has a higher cost.

It's only in US that the cars start at 2.0L.

In Europe and everywhere else, VW and Audi both offer 1.2, 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8L options depending on the car itself.

The base Audi A3 in Pakistan is a 1.2L and you have the option of opting for a 1.8 as well.

Also, while getting the car serviced a few days ago, the sales manager and operations manager at Toyota were discussing the entry of other car manufacturers in Pakistan, and saying that IMC is struggling now to match their quality and is increasingly adding new features to their cars to be somewhat comparable.

The Revo and Fortuner launched this year are nice and all, but they're still missing a lot, and IMC is planning on adding more features to them, including the Pakistani favourite 'Push start' button.

Han, japanese are being imported in far higher numbers than german cars, but Im talking about the high end segment. We see a lot of High end BMWs, Porches, Audis, and Mercs being imported, but I've never seen a high end VW car locally.

Really? Well in that case, I stand corrected, and this will be really good for Pakistani market, since the quality of German and Japanese cars will be vastly superior to what suzuki/Honda/toyota currently offer..Competition is good for us.

It will also be dependent on availability of spare parts

While competition is good for us still there are so many cars already on the roads in Pakistan even when they are overpriced. I wonder what will happen when these are priced right.
