Enough is enough PTCL--I'm getting Wateen

I've tried everything PTCL sucks in my area. Ever since they bought Maxcom my connection has gone down the drain. I've tried complaining 100+ times. The problem is with the line SNR. I live 300m from the exchange and on a good day the attainable rate is 16mb which is perfectly fine for my 5mb connection. However, it fluctuates and I keep getting desynced. I had the lineman visit last week, and while everything was fine over the weekend, my stats have deteriorated to this:

SNR Margin US/DS9.5 / 4.4Line Attenuation US/DS31.5 / 45.6
Power US/DS11.3 / 18.3Attainable Down Speed1532
Link Up Times0Line StateShowtime

Every time I receive a phone, the modem desyncs.

When it works though, it works like butter. 5mb, I have never seen a better connection in Pakistan. Fluid. Great for gaming. But that's where it ends. These stats give me a high ping as well. I'm paying 3500 for this crap? I've already filed a complain in the Consumer Rights Commission and I'm going to demand 4 months of my money back.

Anyways, I'm getting Wateen tomorrow. My 5mb connection is shared between 10 people and now I'm thinking of getting 2x2mb. I'll be double to money but hopefully it'll be more stable than this. I might get higher pings, but I'll have to live with it.

How's the browsing on Wateen? I don't download torrents--only browsing, video chatting and occasionally downloading from http and ftp.

Or is Worldcall a better call? What about Witribe? I'm done with PTCL for good.

Don't you see the problems yourself?

1. 10 people are sharing your Internet.

2. You're phone line obviously needs to be replaced completely.

3. Use the splitter only with your phone. Connect the phone cable to the router directly without the splitter.

So rather than trying to downgrade your speed you're changing to Wateen, which is already capped at 2mbps? Yep makes total sense.

1. 10 people sharing the internet has nothing to do with the SNR and Attenuation values.

2. The line was replaced 6 months ago with CAT6 wires and it goes through 2 NIBs. The telephone line is crystal clear when the lineman comes for his "chai pani" and it goes back to noisy within 48 hours. Complaining at 1218 does the same (it takes 24 hours). If there was a problem with the internal wiring it wouldn't fluctuate like it does now would it? Everytime I receive a call, I am desynced. Sometimes, the second sync is at a much higher rate.

This is what I had when the lineman was here last week:

SNR Margin (dB): 13.9 20.3
Attenuation (dB): 40.5 22.8
Output Power (dBm): 12.6 19.7
Attainable Rate (Kbps): 13356 1161
Rate (Kbps): 7165 767

The lineman wants to replace the wiring (again), but the electrician says it's not a internal problem. The sad part is that I live only 300m from the Exchange. I never had this problem on Maxcom.

I even had the local DSL technician visit twice. Works fine when they are here--goes back to noisy a few hours after they go. Once, last week, my telephone line had no tone (I could here static though). I called the lineman and he said the people at the Exchange are messing... he fixed it within 15 mins and line was crystal clear for that day.

3. I've tried that. They even gave me a new splitter/modem. Doesn't work.

@Lord Ammar

PTCL is synced at 1048 right now. It was 2200 this morning. 5000 last night. It was 64 last week. 0 before that. It's unstable as hell.

Are you in Clifton? What attenuation rates are you getting?

Your attenuation is pretty high i.e you living 300m away from exchange = not possible. What ever it is the problem is your line & your lineman is either a 'haram khor' or your area's line are messed up.

its unstable because ur speed is far more than what ur line can handle. it tries to connect to 5mbps, it fails and it settles for a lower speed.

and try by passing the internal wiring & directly hook up your modem to main wire & see how it goes.

Ya this might work , my neighbor was having same problem they just connect another phone line directly from dp to their home and the net became stable again.

To do this the box should be near to your house to avoid any conflict .

And PTCL don't offer 5mbps, do they? o_O
I was using Maxcom. I have the same package that I had with them. It's syncing to 3mb this morning.

The line itself isn't stable. I was on a 7mb profile and it would sync fine at times and back to terrible at others. Now I'm on a 4.5mb profile and still the same problem.

I just went and bought a Wateen modem. It's working pretty well. Browsing is as good as PTCL at it's peak. Pings are much higher though sadly. It's not just local pings but packets to Kuwait and Saudi are being routed through Europe which means no more TF2/BF3. But on the positive side, I'll be finish a game in SC2 without having the fear of an imminent desync.

And now, my uncle won't have to go to a cyber cafe to book a flight. My dad won't have to wait until tomorrow to check his email. My grandmother will finally be able to Skype her grandchildren without disconnections. I could have lived with higher bandwidth but 200kbs is good enough for now--especially since it's no capped. (the guys at the franchise said 250GB should be no problem. Helpline guys said fair usage is 1000GB/month).

And it's pretty cool that buy 3 months contract and get one month free--everytime. That eventually comes down to 2500 a month.

Most of you here will be happy as I report Wateen is turning out to be crap. Their servers are messed up and I keep getting page time outs. They were going to send someone over in the morning today but nobody here yet. Download speeds are pretty slow too.

Overall, it's a little better than PTCL but still crap.

How is Worldcall?

Depends from area to area.

I've already lodged a complaint with a Consumer Court for PTCL. Who should I contact from the PTCL management to tell them about the sorry state of affairs at their exchange and the haram khor lineman? The haram khors even took my personal modem (that I had bought from the market) apparently in exchange for their PTCL modem. Then they took the PTCL modem when I filed for disconnection. I called the DSL technician and he agreed to return my original modem but I highly doubt he will.

I've not had a working telephone line since 1999 (except the period where I had Maxcom. They get the line fixed and it stayed fixed).
