Assalam-o-Alaikum!
I took the entry tests of this year.got shortlisted in Pieas (electrical eng), Fast lahore (comp science), Comsats islamabad [electrical(electronics or computer)

engineering and Comp science] and got 892 merit no at Nust. Also have applied in IST , inshaa Allah us men bhi aerospace men hojaega.

I am from Hyderabad, and have no relatives in punjab, and Fast has no hostel facilities so if I go to fast then i will be living in private hostel.

Its really difficult to express what i want to do. I want to remain on both hardware and software sides. I want to make a program , put it in the machine i designed,

and see my work moving and doing its thing in the physical world. If the machine has some problem in its circuits or whatever, i want to replace those ''physical''

things by myself. If there is something wrong with the programming, i want to find and correct it myself and don't want to call someone else for it.

The field that has this quality seems to be Comp. Eng. Nust offers computer eng at CEME (rawalpindi) but I really don't know that how good is their comp eng. So

answer this, and also if i have selected the right field and university.

Doing jobs is not of my mindset because i have a passion for research and development, but still it would be welcoming if someone could put a light on job

opportunities spectrum (especially for comp eng). and also the future in research.

Thanks!

PS. I can change the field preferences of NUST till 23rd july.

If you can look past the stifling Military environment and strict routine of EME, I'd say you've made the right choice. A merit of 892 should easily get you into the department of Computer Engineering.

CE provides a nice balance between hardware and software although focus is more tilted towards the software side. To give an example of what you can achieve, you will be able to design electronic circuits and programme a robot all by yourself by the fifth semester. Although EE and CE students dearly lack on the mechanical design and testing area.

Talking about the department, it is probably the ablest of the four departments in EME. Dr Shoab (the HoD) is considered a legend in Engineering and Scientific circles, both here and abroad.

I think that what you want to do is Electronics Engineering or Computer Systems Engineering... Electrical is mostly hardware only (much more related to power generation than controlling said power), while Computer Science is mostly software only. Electronics and Computer Systems would allow you to design your own hardware and run your software on it. Beware though, electronics and computer systems both don't have a job market in Pakistan.

That is true, unfortunately. That's why I always recommend CE over EE(Electronics) as graduates of the former are well versed in the software side of things and could land a CS job if they're skillful enough.

Nust doesn't offer computer system engineering. And i thought that electronics and comp eng were basically the same thing but selected comp eng because i felt it had more of software side than electrnoics.

CE at EME is Computer Systems Engineering. Computer Software Engineering is offered at the Military College of Signals, NUST (Rwp)

And also can someone put light on the job opportunites for comp eng? as said in the main post, i am not interested in doing jobs, but who knows maybe because of supporting myself financially for further studies I could do a job.

Right, see if you can get hostel in MCS, damn that place truly rocks! there are alot of desi foodies near it,last night i was there, doing sheri saw couple of military lads there,EME is not even in PINDI,it's near Motorway and H12 is not far either....

So your best bet would be CSE from MCS if you wanna enjoy city life.

Inshort MCS is in heart of Rawalpindi and the place around is full of life where as nust H12 and EME aren't.

Less said about EME's hostels the better........

Location wise I've always felt EME has an advantage over other schools of NUST. Daewoo bus station is right next and every other vehicle travelling on G.T Road would drop you off smack in front of the campus.

Saddar is at ten minutes drive from the campus.

Coming back to the topic, CEME is good in computer engineering? I have heard a lot of praises about CEME's electrical engineering, but don't know about comp eng.

And also someone was telling me that the nust started comp eng at CEME only about 5 or 6 years back so the repo of the comp engg from it is doubtful. is it right?

Thanks!

What if you're not skillful enough in the software side, but are in the hardware side in CE, Any idea about job opportunities in Pakistan ? :bounce

Job opportunities in the area of Hardware design are not very encouraging in Pakistan. Most opportunities arise in the software side of things. As long as you're a good programmer, jobs shouldn't be hard to come by.
