[h=2]Destiny update addresses House of Wolves annoyances like treasure key drop rate[/h]

Destiny update 1.2.0.2 is live, bringing some requested changes to the first-person shooter, according to a post on developer Bungie's official site.
Perhaps the biggest and most welcome news concerns treasure keys. Since House of Wolves' release, players have been hunting the randomly dropped items to unlock the biggest chests and score the biggest loot in the Prison of Elders arena mode. Drops were rare, and some Guardians spent hours running between public events and finding exploits in the hopes of a drop.

Treasure Keys are now a guaranteed drop in each week's Wanted Fallen Bounty, and developer Bungie also increased their drop rate from small chests at the Prison of Elders' end and from Ether Chests.
Update 1.2.0.2's tweaks hit all corners of the solar system, from bounties to weapons. You can get the details from Bungie below.
[h=2]Key Highlights[/h]
  • The first Wanted Fallen Bounty completed each week is now guaranteed to drop a Treasure Key
  • Greatly increased the drop rate of Treasure Keys from the small chests at the end of the Prison of Elders
  • Increased the drop rate of Treasure Keys from Ether Chests
[h=2]Prison of Elders[/h]
  • Greatly increased the drop rate of Treasure Keys from the small chests
  • Class Items will now drop from Level 32, Level 34, and Level 35
  • Fixed a bug in which the Ship (Hildian Seeker) did not drop under certain circumstances
  • Fixed a bug in which the ‘Elder Cipher’ Bounty could not be acquired if your Bounty inventory was full
  • You will need to defeat Skolas again to receive the ‘Elder Cipher’ Bounty
  • Damage caused by Qodron’s Gaze is reduced by 25%
  • Damage multiplier for the Jailbreaker buff increased by 100%
[h=2]Trials of Osiris[/h]
  • Fixed an issue in which Trials of Osiris emblems were not sent to the Postmaster if your Emblem inventory was full
  • Passage Coins can now be dismantled
[h=2]Weekly Heroics[/h]
  • Fixed an issue where the Weekly Heroic strikes did not award engrams (Note: Tooltip will not display them as rewards)
[h=2]World[/h]
  • Increased the drop rate of Treasure Keys from Ether Chests
  • Ether Chests may only be looted once per spawn
  • Ether Chests will no longer grant ammo consumables when opened
  • Ether Chests will now grant a small amount of Queen's Wrath reputation when opened
  • Ether Chests now have a chance to drop Tokens of Flight, Identity, and Judgment
[h=2]Quests[/h]
  • Petra will no longer display a quest waypoint for players who have not purchased House of Wolves
  • Fixed a bug in which players abandoning the ‘Gone to Ground’ quest were still being directed to the Venus Patrol
[h=2]Bounties[/h]
  • The first Wanted Fallen Bounty completed each week is now guaranteed to drop a Treasure Key
[h=2]Weapons[/h]
  • Fixed a bug in which the 1.2.0.1 hotfix mistakenly did not contain the 1.1.1 Fusion Rifle balance changes. As a result, players were playing with its pre-1.1.1 weapon balance state. The original fix has been re-applied.
[h=2]Items[/h]
  • Tokens of Flight, Identity, and Judgment can now be dismantled to gain +10 House of Judgement reputation each
  • Ammo consumables can now stack to 100

[h=2]Red Bull promotion points to 'The Taken King' as Destiny's next big expansion[/h]

Destiny's next major expansion appears to be The Taken King, according to what looks like specially branded boxes of Red Bull energy soda bearing the name and a logo associated with it.
Bungie, Destiny's developer, filed for a trademark for "The Taken King" in late April, and the application included a logo similar to the one seen on the packaging in this picture taken by Twitter user AgriosEndendros.

Very interesting... #Destiny #Bungie @G1Net pic.twitter.com/DGbLmRJD4H
— Agrios Endendros (@AgriosEndendros) June 2, 2015
The URL mentioned is a dead end right now.
Destiny publisher Activision announced in February that Bungie is working on a "major content release" for the game that the studio is planning to release this fall. Bungie's original contract with Activision from 2010 stipulated that the studio would put out a downloadable expansion, codenamed "Comet," in the years between major entries in the Destiny franchise.

[h=2]Report: Destiny's The Taken King expansion hits Sept. 15, adds new raid, new subclasses[/h]

Destiny's next add-on, The Taken King, will be released on Sept. 15 and add a new subclass for each of the game's current classes, according to a report from Kotaku. The $40 expansion will reportedly also introduce a new raid — something developer Bungie didn't have ready for the recently released House of Wolves add-on.
Kotaku cites marketing materials for Destiny: The Taken King that outline its price and contents. The raid is described as a battle against Oryx, father of Crota, who players fought in The Dark Below's raid, Crota's End.

Earlier today, details on The Taken King were also posted to Reddit, but those details were removed by moderators of the Destiny subreddit. (A cached version is here.) According to that post, The Taken King will add a void elemental super attack for the Hunter, a solar attack for the Titan and an arc attack for the Warlock.
Publisher Activision said during an investor call in February that Destiny would get a "major content release" this fall. Bungie applied for a trademark for The Taken King in May, and marketing materials from Red Bull published last week offered further evidence of the expansion's name.
More details on Destiny: The Taken King are expected to be officially revealed at E3 2015 next week.

[h=2]Destiny veterans get VIP bonuses with Taken King DLC[/h]

If you were going to wait to hop into Destiny until the Taken King DLC launches on Sept. 15, here's a good reason not to: Bungie will be doling out exclusive bonuses to players who head into The Taken King at level 30-plus or have purchased both previous expansion packs.
Here are the details: Players who reach level 30-plus on at least one character or buy both prior expansion packs by August 31 and buy The Taken King by Feb. 1, 2016 will receive an exclusive commemorative "Founder's Fortune" Year 1 emblem, Sparrow, armor shader "and more." What's the "and more"? We'd guess that it's "Gjallarhorn 2: Gjallarhorner" if we hadn't just totally made that up.

[h=2]Destiny: The Taken King has PlayStation-exclusive content, and here it is[/h]

Destiny's next expansion, The Taken King, will continue the series' arrangement between Sony and Activision for exclusive content on PlayStation platforms, and Sony revealed the details earlier this week.
The amount of exclusive content in The Taken King is similar to the amount of exclusives in Destiny, The Dark Below and House of Wolves. The PlayStation-exclusive content to this point will remain exclusive until at least this fall. Destiny's website notes that Xbox 360 and Xbox One players won't get The Taken King's exclusives until at least fall 2016.

The Taken King players on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 will be treated to an exclusive Vex strike, "The Echo Chamber"; exotic scout rifle called Jade Rabbit; and one set of armor for each of Destiny's three classes. They'll also get an exclusive Crucible map, Sector 618:
Challenge your fellow Guardians in this Crucible map set within the ruins of an Earth colony reclaimed from the House of Wolves. Fans of Clash and Control modes will find plenty to love in this mid-sized arena: each side's narrow chambers give way to an open center area, connected only by two exposed bridges and a handful of small platforms for the adventurous.
The Taken King launches Sept. 15 on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One for $39.99. For more on the expansion, check out our hands-on impressions from E3 and our video interview below.

[h=2]Bungie apologizes to Destiny fans, will sell Taken King DLC goodies separately[/h]

Bungie's The Taken King expansion for Destiny includes much new content, but fans were annoyed when some of the exclusive bonuses included in the $80 The Taken King: Collector's Edition could be purchased no other way. It seemed like hardcore fans, the ones who had supported the game from the beginning, were being left out in the cold.
Bungie has addressed the situation today, and it looks like the fans have been listened to.

[h=3]What went wrong[/h]A tone-deaf interview on the pricing and content of The Taken King with Eurogamer seemed to set the community on fire. The issue is that while the expansion costs $40, you would have to pay $80 for the Collector's Edition of the original game to get all the content and three new emotes that wouldn't be sold any other way. So to get that content, you'd have to rebuy the game and several expansions.
Here is the exchange between the interviewer and Luke Smith, The Taken King's creative director.
Luke Smith: Is it also the final question on the emotes?
Eurogamer: I'm not going to mention them again. I can't get them.
Luke Smith: But you can if you buy the Collector's Edition.
Eurogamer: I'm not going to buy the game and the two DLCs all over again.
Luke Smith: Okay, but first I want to poke at you on this a little bit.
Eurogamer: Poke at me?
Luke Smith: You're feeling anxious because you want this exclusive content but you don't know yet how much you want it. The notion of spending this money is making you anxious, I can see it -
Eurogamer: I do want them. I would buy them -
Luke Smith: If I fired up a video right now and showed you the emotes you would throw money at the screen.
The whole interview is interesting in that it presented the worst possible way for Bungie to deal with the fan feedback, and the community has been in an uproar since it was published. Bungie has released a statement on the situation today.
"Reading my interview with Eurogamer and imagining it came from some random developer of a game I love — that random developer looks like an Asshat," Smith wrote. "But that Asshat was me — and those words rightfully anger you."

"I'm sorry."
Bungie has now pledged to sell that content, which consists of three Armor Shaders, three Exotic Class Items with XP Bonuses, and three class specific emotes, in a digital package sold for $20 starting on Sept. 15 of this year.
The blog post goes on to discuss as-yet unannounced bonuses for "VIP" characters who have been playing since launch or purchased the existing expansions, as well as a hint about a bonus for people who rebought the game for the content listed above. "If you purchased the existing Digital Collector’s Edition, and you already owned Destiny and both expansion packs, we’ll have some additional information for you soon," Bungie stated.
We'll see if the fans are appeased by this decision.

Danny O'Dwyer is one of the best game journalists around and 'The Point' is the best game show. Period.

The following video details Destiny's manipulative marketing model. Highlights similarities with practices like gambling and lab experiments done on pigeons :p

The Point - Destiny: The Hardcore Gamer's Slot Machine - The Point - GameSpot
Loot based games strive to achieve what Destiny has apparently perfected - Keeping gamers hooked and coming back for more. Ofcourse comparisons can be drawn with historical experiments that tested basic human wants and needs. On a fundamental level, gamers who simply enjoy gaming feel more rewarded than those who don't. The fact that he singles out Destiny as the culprit of doing something better than most other games of this type, and that the players of Destiny are nothing more than pigeons is poor show. The critique is very heavy handed and the innuendos seem out of line as if this game is the worst offender.

It's like "Hey you! Destiny player! You think you're having fun? Well guess what? You're not allowed to have fun. You should be playing other games that hinge around the same designs that Destiny employs, only worse."

Secondly, the timing of this video is very off. Now, Destiny is a game where nearly all activities have a reward attached to it that's a guaranteed drop. This is a complete opposite of how the game started out. Achievements are now tied to tangible objectives and loot is confirmed at the end of your activity. Though some level of randomness remains, it's all but gone. This is further helped by the fact that the amount of not-so-good loot has shrunk considerably since launch and it's clear that Bungie have been reacting to feedback.

I have to say this video falls flat on its face because there are several times when he mentions "You never know when it's coming", whereas it's been nearly 1 month since Destiny shifted gears completely and now offers rewards on a highly predictable schedule. And, in some cases, a 100% predictable schedule, which has reduced the grind and made the game a lot more rewarding.

[h=2]Bungie marks the first year of Destiny with special in-game rewards[/h]

Millions of people have played Destiny since its launch last September, and Bungie is paying tribute to their dedication with unique in-game items, the studio announced today.
Today, July 7, is Bungie Day — a holiday of the studio's creation that celebrates the company's fascination with the number 7 — and it's the first one "in the Destiny era," as community manager David "DeeJ" Dague noted. Bungie's initial way of showing appreciation for Destiny's community was to release a half-hour video showcasing players' efforts in the game.

Next, Bungie announced Moments of Triumph, a collection of 10 Destiny accomplishments covering everything from the ordinary (completing the main story campaign) to the immensely difficult (defeating Skolas in the level 35 Prison of Elders challenge).

[h=5]Must Read[/h]
Hands-on with Destiny: The Taken King and Bungie's return to its Halo roots

Everything you've already done in Destiny counts toward the Moments of Triumph, so most die-hard players will have completed many of the objectives. Guardians can keep track of their progress on Bungie's website, and those who achieve all of the goals by Destiny's one-year anniversary — Sept. 9, 2015 — will earn a unique in-game emblem.
Those who want another special item can enter the Destiny Year One Art Contest. Bungie is taking submissions from now until July 23 for the following prompt: "What has been your favorite thing about the first year of Destiny?" Images and video are valid; Bungie will post detailed guidelines later. The creators of the 50 best submissions will receive a Blacksmith shader, which the studio gave out during E3, and the top seven will get a Collector's Edition copy of The Taken King.
Bungie also added a new feature to its website today: The Armory. This hub serves as a comprehensive guide to all the weapons and armor available in Destiny, and is intended to help players make decisions about their loadouts and gear.

Dague concluded the post with a note of thanks to the Destiny community, a touching sentiment that isn't expressed much in the often contentious relationship between Bungie and the people who play Destiny.
"You are legendary," said Dague. "If you've created a Guardian in our world, you have made the game of Destiny better. It's been an honor and a pleasure to play alongside you this year. You're the reason why we do what we do."
Destiny's third expansion, The Taken King, launches Sept. 15. For more, check out our hands-on impressions from E3 and the reveal trailer below.

[h=2]Destiny: The Taken King will greatly improve quests and bounties, and how they're handled[/h]

Destiny developer Bungie is introducing a much-needed overhaul to the game's quest system with The Taken King this fall, the studio announced today.
Bounties for exotic weapons are some of the most fun, rewarding sequences of tasks in Destiny, even if some of the individual parts can be tremendously frustrating (we're looking at you, void-damage PvP kills for Thorn).

Those bounties "took you on a journey through multiple activities — which in the best cases had flashes of unique moments — and ended with rewards players cared about," said Luke Smith, creative director on The Taken King, in a Bungie blog post today. "We want Destiny to provide more experiences like that."
To that end, said Smith, "The Taken King was built with Quests in mind." And since Bungie didn't want to leave Destiny and its first two expansions out of the loop, the studio went ahead and "questified" everything in the game so far.

That starts with a new tab in Destiny's interface, the fifth one: "Progress." This screen tracks bounties — for which there will be 16 slots, not just the 10 that have been available since November — as well as quests. Destiny 2.0, which coincides with the launch of The Taken King in September, will allow Guardians to turn in completed bounties directly from this Progress screen; you won't have to visit the Tower or the Reef anymore. And Bungie is moving reputation icons from the Inventory page to the Progress tab.
You'll also be able to catch a glimpse of quest progress on the screen that appears when you bring up your Ghost, as you can see in the screenshot at the top of this article. This is a great way to utilize a screen that currently consists mostly of empty space. In fact, all of these changes look like smart upgrades that will cut down on some of the busy work that's inherent to playing Destiny.

Bungie said today that in the weeks to come, it will provide more in-depth glances at weapons, balance, progression, destinations, enemies and more in The Taken King. The expansion is set for release Sept. 15. For more details, check out the quest details screenshot below, and our hands-on impressions from E3.
Correction: Destiny launched with five bounty slots, not 10. We've edited the article to reflect this.

[h=2]Big changes are coming to Destiny's weapons with the game's 2.0 update[/h]

With the upcoming 2.0 update for Destiny, Bungie is making sweeping changes to the game's weapons — changes that will have a big impact in cooperative multiplayer, in PVP and on the effectiveness of your precious Gjallarhorn. In a lengthy news post today, Bungie designer Jon Weisnewski detailed how weapons will soon be changing, both from a weapon class standpoint and for individual exotic weapons, from the wildly popular Thorn, to the less popular No Land Beyond.
Bungie outlines the across-the-board changes that are coming to auto rifles, hand cannons, shotguns, pulse rifles, fusion rifles and rocket launchers in great detail. The pending tweaks to weapons appear to slightly reduce the effectiveness of hand cannons, while giving a boost to auto rifles and scout rifles, but many of the adjustments are nuanced. Weisnewski explains Bungie's goals for each class and the steps the developer is taking in the pursuit of balance.

There are also specific, important changes coming to existing exotic weapons.
"Some of these changes are intended to make you feel better while killing with the weapon, and some are intended to make you feel better while being killed by the weapon," Weisnewski says.
A few exotics that are either lacking or currently unpopular — Hard Light, Nechrochasm, No Land Beyond — are getting some attention from Bungie to make them more effective and ultimately more appealing to players.

Other weapons are taking a slight hit, including exotics like Thorn, Ice Breaker and Gjallarhorn.
"We want to preserve the functionality that makes Thorn such a compelling weapon, but its effective range and lethality are one of the most hotly contended items by the PVP player base," Weisnewski said when prefacing the incoming changes to the hand cannon. In addition to general hand cannon tweaks, Thorn users will soon find the Mark of the Devourer damage over time perk to be less lethal in competitive multiplayer.

Players who rely on Ice Breaker will find themselves waiting a bit longer for the sniper rifle to recharge. Bungie is increasing the time for a round to recharge from five seconds to eight seconds.
The highly coveted rocket launcher Gjallarhorn is getting a downgrade of its own. Wolfpack Rounds, the tracking cluster missiles that spawn upon detonation, will see their damage reduced by an unspecified amount.
"We definitely intended to have a high damage Heavy Weapon that was ideal for PvE destruction," Weisnewski said when discussing Gjallarhorn changes. "What we did not intend, and what we unfortunately saw, was pick up Raid and Nightfall groups gating participation based on whether or not players had this weapon. Gjallarhorn was so strong that for many people it had become the only answer to getting through tough encounters, and therefore they were less willing to spend time with other players that didn't have it."
There's a lot more detail in the full post, which touches on other Destiny exotics and weapon stats.
Destiny's 2.0 update is expected to hit alongside the release of the shooter's next major expansion, The Taken King, on Sept. 15.
Correction: The original version of this article indicated that auto rifles were being adjusted to make them less powerful with the 2.0 update. They are, in many ways, becoming more effective in PVP and PVE.

[h=2]Destiny's next expansion replaces Dinklage and makes elite weapons obsolete[/h]

Destiny's next expansion, The Taken King, will make some massive changes to the way the entire game works, including its progression system, missions and weapons, according to the cover story for Game Informer's September issue.
When Destiny debuted last September, its level cap was 30 — the first 20 were standard levels achieved by earning experience points, and an armor attribute called Light was required for all levels above 20. Destiny's first expansion, The Dark Below, increased the cap to 32 in December, and May's House of Wolves expansion brought it to 34.

Game Informer reports that The Taken King will raise Destiny's level cap to 40, and that the expansion will restructure the entire progression system as well. Leveling will no longer be tied to Light; instead, you'll simply reach new levels by earning experience all the way from the beginning of the game to level 40. As you rank up, you'll unlock the ability to use new weapons and armor, which will still provide power gains. In addition, Destiny developer Bungie is tweaking the game's loot algorithm to take your existing gear into account, so you'll receive fewer duplicate items and more gear that's better than what you have.

[h=5]Must Read[/h]
Hands-on with Destiny: The Taken King and Bungie's return to its Halo roots

The Taken King will recast Destiny's Ghost, replacing the much-maligned Peter Dinklage with veteran voice actor Nolan North, according to Game Informer. North plays the role of Ghost in The Taken King's missions, and Bungie had him re-record all of Dinklage's existing dialogue, too — the expansion completely replaces Dinklage's performance with North's, eliminating the Game of Thrones star from Destiny entirely.
Game Informer also reports that the legendary gear players have come to know and love — items that Bungie is referring to as "Year One" weapons and armor — won't get any stronger than it is now. The Taken King will kick off the second year of Destiny, and while Game Informer says Year One gear will suffice for the early part of the expansion, "dozens" of new Year Two weapons and armor pieces will quickly eclipse the existing items. Say goodbye to your 365-attack Fatebringers and Found Verdicts, Guardians.
"There are definitely some weapons that you are going to find better versions of — there's going to be something that replaces that sniper rifle that you love," said Luke Smith, creative director on The Taken King, in an interview with Game Informer.

Destiny: The Taken King will be released Sept. 15 on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. For more details, check out Game Informer's full cover story.

[h=1]‘Destiny': Nolan North To Replace Peter Dinklage As Ghost’s Voice[/h]

Bungie’s Destiny has been a divisive game since its launch for a variety of reasons; its random loot generator and leveling system chief among them. But during Destiny‘s first year, the game’s developers have generally been mindful of players’ complaints and have tried to respond in ways that help the ever-growing community continue to enjoy playing through the game. (Though, those fixes themselves are at times controversial, proving Bungie still very much is on a learning curve with Destiny.)
The next major chapter of Destiny kicks off this fall with the release of The Taken King, Destiny’s largest batch of new content to date.Ahead of its release, the new expansion has already earned the ire of some gamers over the pricing of the forthcoming DLC, and surely once The Taken King launches it’ll have its own set of bugs in need of a hotfix (as has sadly become the trend among gaming’s most anticipated properties). However, what won’t be included in The Taken King is Peter Dinklage’s oft-ridiculed performance as every Guardian’s stalwart companion, Ghost.

Replacing Dinklage as the voice of Ghost – a hovering A.I. who provides players with direction as well in game commentary and story – is Nolan North, an actor most are familiar with as Nathan Drake in the Uncharted series. North is a prolific voice actor, lending his talents to a variety of video games, most notably franchises like Assassin’s Creed, Batman: Arkham, Call of Duty, the LEGO games–the list goes on.
When speaking with Game Informer (whose September issue’s cover story is all about The Taken King), North said of the role:
“I was really excited to do this role. You want to give him as much personality as the world will allow, without making it unbelievable. There’s a fine line to walk there, and I think we found it.”
Some fans will likely laugh when they hear North say he’s interested in giving Ghost “as much personality as the world will allow,” as Dinklage’s performance came across as if he had been given the complete opposite direction. Then again, to his credit the script is just as equally to blame for Dinklage’s poor showing. As is Dinklage’s inexperience as a voice actor, something perhaps the developers should have considered instead of simply looking to book a big name for their hit video game.
Going forward, North will be providing all of Ghost’s dialogue, something he’d like to do for years to come, adding that he hopes “we can evolve Ghost as we move forward over the years.” But that’s not all, because Bungie is also having North re-record all of Ghost’s lines from the previous Destiny game (Ghost was already noticeably absent as a character from both The Dark Below and House of Wolves), effectively erasing Dinklage from the game entirely.
Destiny‘s creative director, Luke Smith explains:
“We wanted Nolan North’s version of the Ghost to wake you up at the start of the journey at level one and follow you all the way to level forty.”

So long, Dinklebot. We hardly knew you. And that’s probably for the better. If there’s anything at all to learn from this latest Destiny hiccup (which frankly, this new casting promises to do a fine job of fixing), it’s that not every actor can automatically be a successful voice actor. Recording voice work – and particularly for video games – is a grueling job, often with the actor in a booth, alone, reciting the same lines over and over again, each time with the same amount of energy and inflection.
For his part, Dinklage has proven himself a talented actor on screen – where he has other actors to play off of and likely smarter direction and scripts – but North is clearly far more experienced when it comes to bringing life to video game characters – and doing so to great acclaim. You can let us know how you feel about Nolan North replacing Peter Dinklage as Ghost in Destiny, in the comment section below.
Destiny: The Taken King will be released on September 15, 2015.

[h=2]Destiny: The Taken King includes a level boost to let players skip to the good stuff[/h]

Destiny players who purchase the game's upcoming expansion, The Taken King, can take advantage of a character boost that will help them bypass some grind and jump into the game's new story arc.
That boost — players only get one with their copy of the expansion — is a one-time use consumable, Bungie's David "DeeJ" Dague told Polygon at Gamescom today, and will level up a Guardian to the point where he or she is "poised on the starting line of The Taken King." Dague couldn't say exactly what that minimum level is or whether Guardians will also be automatically outfitted with level-appropriate armor and weapons, but we've asked for more details on the boost.

Bungie says the boost can be used by new and existing characters.
Destiny: The Taken King will raise the level cap from 34 to 40, among other sweeping changes. The expansion is coming to PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One on Sept. 15.
