C4eva vows to hack the new Xbox 360 lite-on drive

According to reports, C4eva has been quoted as saying "I have found some things that are not yet known about the lite-on, it will be done!" This will be music to potential hacker's ears...

For anybody who has been unlucky and landed themselves a LiteOn drive, here is a little tease from c4eva himself.

UPDATE 2 - More good news...Team Xecuter has decided to come out of "retirement" from making modchips and take a look at the new Lite-On drives. Their solution would almost certainly be a modchip that requires soldering as opposed to some sort of flash like c4eva does. Here's what Team Xecuter had to say:

As you are probably aware we retired from making Xbox modchips some time ago and have only made a few add-ons for the 360 here and there. However we have been barraged with requests regarding the new Liteon drive.

So we're being sent a couple and have agreed to at least have a look. We'd prefer there to be some flashing solution of course then the FW guys could do what they do best, however it looks like a read only masked rom. From what we can see atm there is nothing that looks any more complicated than the original Xbox hacking we did, so we'll see what we can do. The motivation hasn't been there for a long time but maybe this will kick us in the ass like the old days

Note: C4EVA may have made some progress so if he needs anything from us or if we will be wasting our time - just get him to drop us a line - thanks.

Lite-On IT has benefited from increasing sales of Xbox 360 consoles following Microsoft's lowering of prices and is expected to ship five million DVD-ROM drives for Xbox 360s in the third quarter of 2008, according to Lite-On's component suppliers.

Lite-On's monthly shipment volume of Xbox 360 DVD-ROM drives will exceed 1.5 million units this month, and the total volume for the whole quarter will reach five million units, the sources estimated.

Update from Geremia at the XBOXHacker forums..

Got a drive as gift for testing (thanks Raiden)

Some small update:

it's an embedded spi flash, exactly an MX25L2005 and dosflash1.6 can write it.
The bad is that you can access it only if it's completely erased, this seems to be the "check module" mentioned into the patent

About reading the fw, i can just get 3-4 256bytes chunks in a tricky way, but can't have a complete dump this way.

erasing flash: ok
writing flash: ok

hey guyz i heard that with spoofing a benq instead of lite-on makes online play possible...maybe they'd be looking lookin to by-pass this restriction on future possible lite-on hack....
