A 12-year-old boy from California reportedly ran away from home after his parents took away his World of Warcraft video game. “We were so worried about him. We couldn’t find him anywhere,” said mother Dorothy Rollins about her son’s disappearance. “We called everyone, our neighbors, his friends. Nobody had a clue about where he could be,” she said. According to Stanton Weekly, the parents of 12-year-old Damien Rollins decided to take away his World of Warcraft video game after they say he became addicted to it. That night, the 12-year-old apparently left his room and vanished.

9+ million people pay $15 every month to play it.
Their are specialized clinics in USA/Europe which "cure" you from WOW.
Chineese government has official rules regarding playing wow.
So far 5 people have died from continuously playing wow non-stop.

Yes its that good.

No, it isn't. If I want a good experience I would just play an RPG. Atleast they make you think about a few things in the end.

Even before we begin our discussion lets make one thing clear.

A. For how long have you played WOW?

I don't want it to be like the last time where i post a rant and turns out the other poster thinks WOW is a RTS game and doesn't has an iota of knowledge what it is.

Yes, Blizzard could buy out Sony and Microsoft gaming divisons if they wanted to, lulz.

@ why do people pay $15?
Ans: Its a very addictive game, its pretty much like living in a medieval LOTR-esque world. Blizzard keeps on adding stuff the game updates week with new quests.

(1) No, I haven't played wow and neither I plan to. I have read alot of artices/threads about it on various sites and I have seen my friends playing it. Suffice it to say that the whole MMORPG thing and the wow universe just don't appeal to me. But I think regardless of everything else, the real thing is whether you value and enjoy the achievements put in the game. I don't because these achievements seem very artificial to me. If you do enjoy these achievements, by all means, have fun playing it.

(2) But the question that really needs to be answered to prove that wow is THAT good isn't about how many people play it. Addiction is not necessarily related to quality. I can elaborate this point further if you want (not doing it to avoid a long post). It should be whether it brought any real improvements to the previous MMORPGs or was it just another MMO that got famous because it got to the masses and had a virtual world that so many people are familiar with. Admitedly I don't know the answer to this question because I have never played (or researched) about MMORPGs enough. You could enlighten me on this one.

That's what i thought before i started playing, suffice to say that's not the case. WOW has a story, there are hundreds and thousands of NPCs in the world who give you quests its just like a RPG with a huge open world. I could describe it to you but that would take too long. You can try the game without spending a SINGLE rupee, you can sign up for a 10 day free trial if you don't like it its OK with me but anyone who likes games like Oblivion, Kotor, FF12, diablo will just LOVE this game.

I think a better source would be reviews i am admittedly biased towards blizzard games but WOW is one of the highest rated games of all time so i think it did bring improvements to MMORPG genre.

Yeh I kinda get the picture of gameplay. Something similar to FF12 but more epic and more teamwork involved. Its the time commitment thing before raids and few other things which I don't like. I prefer to play games at my own pace. Anyway, that trial thing sounds good. Too bad I have heard frightening stories about people starting wow ..... just for fun ^_- . Luckily my internet sucks ^_^.
