i see many available online... there is the WD black for 30k and its green for about 20k... there is the seagate 128mb cache es constellation but it is about 40k... then there are a load of lacie and WD external usb drives so there is a plenty of choice here. But the external drives aren't as reliable and fast even with usb 3.0... but my main purpose is storage... so which one should i buy? i could get two greens for 41k as well... what should be the best choice for me? my first preference is longevity followed by price and then speed..

well i think this is the best budget hdd i could get... it is 5900 rpm though but still better than a green's 5400... so the only question remains is about longevity... how reliable is this model? wd never failed on me but all seagates failed but they do offer better speeds...
i have been using both brands WD and Seagate since ages and still going well none of them failed on me

Bro i dont have much experience with hdds but as far as reliability is concerned seagate wins hands down than any other brand .In my gaming life i have bought 2 seagates and one WD Green.WD started giving me problems within a year and half but Seagate gone as long as 3-4 years. So rest is upto u Best of Luck :)

Both concerned WD Green and Seagate 4TB are using 1TB per platter designs. The only difference is in their spinning speed. WD Green runs at 5400RPM while the other at 5900. The last time i checked, WD Green was like Rs.200 expensive than the Seagate. Being 5900, is reliability enough ... because its going to be more reliable than a 7200RPM (or higher) any way.

So i'd say pick whichever one is cheaper. Personally, i'd pick the Seagate for a little extra performance.

If you like to jump even higher, i'd say have a look at the new 6TB Drives by Seagate (not available in PK)

I don't want a wd green... i have one which is 1.5tb... it is reliable but it is not fast and i hate it especially when i have to extract big files with winrar etc... and big sized blueray files occasionally lag(not a problem though as i doesn't occur much).. if i wd then i would either buy an external or a black...

Extracting or decompression speed has more to do with your CPU speed than your hard drive speed

I'd have one old external Hitachi hd in time when i was using it with p4 pc extracting and copying takes so much time and I thought its hdd which is slow but since I'm using it with core i3 pc extracting takes only few seconds

Both the concerned 4TB Hard Drives have 1TB platters (a total of FOUR 1TB platters = 4TB). They will perform much better than your current 1.5TB hard drive especially when you'll move around large files. So like i said, the only difference is ... in the platter speed. Pick the one whichever you like. I won't mind having a little extra performance from that 5900RPM 4TB Seagate, personally.

so the last thing... what about the reliability issues of seagate... it is a fact that seagate in the past have failed a lot more than wd... i don't want something that works a year and then dies... e.g a wd black has a 5 year limited warranty and this one has two... should i buy these eyes closed without being concerned about long term viability?

nah man... it might have to do with that but not in the new computers... ofcourse the cpu has to do the work but the haddisk speed can be a choke point... with greens it is slower but with my 1tb black it is much much much faster...

i have purchased two seagates..st4000dm000 model
Congratulations.

How much did you pay for them?

Could you do the Unboxing with the following?
- Physical pictures.
- HDTune Random Read/Write tests (Write tests won't work if you have created partitions)

This thread has served its purpose, though.
