Report: BioWare’s Anthem delayed as studio ‘doubles down’ on make-or-break titleAmbitious open-world RPG now coming in 2019Anthem, BioWare’s ambitious action role-playing game announced at E3 2017, will not come out until 2019, according to a report from Kotaku, representing a delay past the launch window originally said to be the last quarter of this year.Kotaku’s report characterizes Anthem’s delay as a sign of increasing pressure on the Electronic Arts studio to come back with a big hit following the disappointing performance of Mass Effect: Andromeda last year. Unidentified sources connected to the studio told Kotaku that the fall 2018 window was never realistic; Kotaku speculates that BioWare cannot delay the game beyond March 2019, which is when EA’s 2019 fiscal year ends.An Electronic Arts representative told Polygon that the company did not have any comment on Kotaku’s story or the progress of Anthem’s development.“There’s a belief that if Anthem doesn’t live up to EA’s expectations, BioWare will look very different in the future,” especially after Andromeda’s performance, Kotaku reports. The report says that most of BioWare’s attention is now focused on Anthem, and away from a Dragon Age reboot and the MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic, which launched in 2011.Mass Effect: Andromeda was a troubled project before it launched in March 2017, and the aftermath ultimately led to a restructuring of the BioWare Montreal studio, with developers from Andromeda reassigned to support the BioWare’s Edmonton office instead of working on a sequel to Andromeda. Support for the game ended in August and no post-launch downloadable content was ever created, a departure from how past editions of the AAA franchise between 2007 and 2012 had been handled.Kotaku’s story goes on to say that BioWare has also reevaluated its approach to Dragon Age in light of publishing expectations about games as a service. That, combined with difficulties integrating the Frostbite engine originally built to serve shooters like the Battlefield and Battlefront series, has some in the studio anxious that its fate depends on the success of Anthem and its reception, according to Kotaku.Anthem, an open-world science-fiction RPG whose characters wear mechanized combat suits and battle monsters in a post-apocalyptic setting, received a splashy premiere during Microsoft’s E3 keynote last June. The next month, however, BioWare’s general manager and Anthem’s director, Aaryn Flynn, resigned from the studio. He was replaced by Casey Hudson, the longtime veteran of Mass Effect development.

BioWare’s Anthem delayed to 2019, EA confirms (update)But it’s not a delay, EA exec tells Wall Street JournalWhile denying an earlier report that development is behind schedule, Electronic Arts told The Wall Street Journal that Anthem, the open-world, multiplayer action game coming from BioWare, will launch in 2019 and not 2018, the window originally given for the game at E3 2017.Instead, EA will launch a new Battlefield game. Blake Jorgensen, Electronic Arts’ chief financial officer, told the Journal that the publisher figured Anthem would do better if it launched in a quieter period than the traditional end-of-the-year crush of big titles.“People are trying to create a story,” Jorgensen told the Journal, denying reports Anthem was delayed.Last week, Kotaku reported that Anthem would not launch until 2019, with unidentified sources at BioWare saying the fall 2018 window was never considered realistic. The news was couched inside a story portraying BioWare as feeling pressure to develop a big hit following the disappointing March 2017 launch of Mass Effect Andromeda, whose support was terminated relatively quickly in August.Anthem, an open-world, science-fiction RPG whose characters wear mechanized combat suits and battle monsters in a post-apocalyptic setting, received a splashy premiere during Microsoft’s E3 keynote last June. The next month, however, BioWare’s general manager and Anthem’s director, Aaryn Flynn, resigned from the studio. He was replaced by Casey Hudson, the longtime veteran of Mass Effect development.Jorgensen offered no other details on the Battlefield game coming later this year. The most recent entry in the series was 2016’s Battlefield 1, a critical and commercial success. That followed 2015’s Battlefield Hardline, a cops-and-robbers take on the franchise by Visceral Games, a studio Electronic Arts closed in October. Battlefield had been an annual franchise on consoles and PC from 2008 to 2014.Update: In a call with investors today, Andrew Wilson, the Electronic Arts chief executive, repeated that the decision to move Anthem to a later date was a scheduling matter.“Regardless of how it’s being portrayed, we’re not look at that as a delay, we’ve chosen to launch Anthem in [the fourth quarter]. The date is chosen by by portfolio balance, not product readiness,” Wilson said. “And we’re really excited by the way the new Battlefield is shaping up. It probably doesn’t make too much sense to launch Anthem right by it. As a new IP, it probably makes sense to give [Anthem] its own launch window.”Wilson said EA DICE is making the next Battlefield, but gave no other details, such as a title.

[h=1]Anthem leader promises more focus on storylines[/h]

[h=2]BioWare general manager launches a new blog[/h]

BioWare says it’s focused on delivering a big story for its next game Anthem, acknowledging that the developer ought to have spent more time on narrative in its last game, Mass Effect Andromeda.
The Electronic Arts’-owned studio’s general manager Casey Hudson delivered a blog postearlier today, in which he talked about the heightened importance of story.
Hudson has spent much of his career at BioWare, working on big role-playing games including the original Mass Effect trilogy. Following a stint at Microsoft, working on HoloLens, he came back to the company last summer, following the departure of previous general manager Aaryn Flynn.
In his blog post, Hudson wrote the following:
When I returned to BioWare last summer, Mass Effect: Andromeda had just been released and there was a significant movement among players asking for a story DLC that would answer questions surrounding the fate of the quarians. As you know, we were not able to deliver story DLC for Andromeda—this was as frustrating for us as it was for players, and it was something we knew we had to solve in future games.
That experience ultimately became a defining moment in refocusing BioWare’s mission. We need to delight players with new experiences and innovation, but we must stay focused on the importance of the world, character, and storytelling elements that players expect from our games. And our games must be designed to continue delivering new stories and experiences, in an ongoing relationship with players in the worlds we’re evolving together.
It’s in that spirit that we are working through production on Anthem–a game designed to create a whole new world of story and character that you can experience with friends in an ongoing series of adventures. It will be unlike anything you’ve played, but if we do it right, it will feel very distinctly BioWare.
Anthem is an open-world, multiplayer science-fiction RPG in which characters wear mechanized combat suits to battle monsters. The game was first unveiled at E3 last year and will be launched on PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One. Although originally tagged for release in 2018, it’s expected to be launched some time in 2019, as the company labors to salvage some of its damaged reputation, in the aftermath of Mass Effect Andromeda.
That game failed to meet the expectations of both critics and fans. It was plagued withsevere animation bugs at launch, which adds credence to reports that development was rushed. Plans for downloadable content, including new stories, were scrapped.
Hudson also wrote that he hopes to use the blog to keep fans updated with “stories about development as we head towards the launch of Anthem.” He added: “Next time I’ll talk more about how our updated studio mission is helping to focus our work on Anthem and the games that will follow.”

So much hate for Bioware after Andromeda. I know it wasnt a blockbuster but it still was a pretty good one. Have high hopes for Anthem too.

No lootboxes, cosmetic purchases only.

Completely redid Battlefront II's progression system, now BFV and Anthem won't have lootboxes either. Glad to see the trend is dead.

Depends. From the way they described it, it sounds like the game still has a lot of online influence, you can just play through the game solo too if you want to.
