Microsoft Update: The official page has been edited to remove mention of Windows 10 devices.

“It’s important to us that Xbox Game Pass provides an enjoyable and seamless experience,” a Microsoft spokesperson told Polygon. “Right now, we’re focused on launching Xbox Game Pass on Xbox One consoles and look forward to bringing the service to the broader Xbox community later this spring.”

Original story: Microsoft is moving into the world of Netflix-style game subscriptions with Xbox Game Pass, a monthly service coming this spring that will give you a selection of games you can download and play on your Xbox One for $9.99 a month.

The service will include “over 100 games,” including Halo 5: Guardians, Payday 2, NBA 2K16 and SoulCalibur II.

“One of the best things about Xbox Game Pass is that you can discover and download the full titles directly on your Xbox One,” the official post states. “That means continuous, full-fidelity gameplay without having to worry about streaming, bandwidth or connectivity issues. In addition, all Xbox One games in the catalog — and related add-ons — will be available to purchase at an exclusive discount for Xbox Game Pass members, so you can make the games you love part of your permanent library to play whenever you want. Every month new games will cycle into the subscription with some cycling out, giving you a constantly updating library of games.”

Any game you buy through the service will be sold to you at a 20 percent discount.

An alpha preview of the program begins today with “a very limited” number of games, and Xbox Live Gold subscribers will get first crack at the program this spring. It also sounds as if the service may be available, at least in part, on the PC.

“Xbox Game Pass will only be available on Xbox One and Windows 10 devices,” Microsoft stated. “While some Xbox 360 backwards compatible games will be included in Xbox Game Pass, those titles will not be available on the Xbox 360 console via your subscription.”

This is an interesting shift away from traditional premium gaming on consoles, although the viability of the service will likely depend on the quality of the games offered for download and play every month. Microsoft has stated that 2K, 505 Games, Bandai Namco Entertainment, Capcom, Codemasters, Deep Silver, Focus Home Interactive, Sega, SNK Corporation, THQ Nordic GmbH, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and Microsoft Studios have all signed on to provide games for the service.

if they're able to ensure day (or even month) 1 release for all future titles, this is basically a killer-app.

Imagine all new games for a measly $9.99 subscription per month.

Holy shit.

Your move Sony.

Except I very highly doubt new games will be offered with this service. I'm sure it will be slightly older games, different ones being added every month. Nevertheless, this is a great idea and what PS Now should have been. Streaming games is a big no no, and I hope Sony learns from this and lets us download games from PS Now rather than stream them.

Highly unlikely. The image that was posted by Phil has Halo 5 on top, no GeoW 4 not even Recore down the list so I'm pretty sure this is more or less on the same lines as EA Access which keeps on adding games to the vault once the immediate appeal goes down, a year or so after release.

Yeah sounds like EA access, I personally think it was worth the money

At 2 bucks a month, EA access is a steal IMO. Not too sure about XBOX pass at this point, especially given the fact that we pay 50ish bucks for an annual Gold membership already.

IMO this will primarily be a cheaper alternative to playing most Xbox 360 games you may have missed out on, with only a few OG XB1 titles thrown in. Impossible that they'll add new XB1 games to it in the same month.

There seems to be a defined pool of games and it will shift each month. Though what's cool is you can buy a currently catalogued game at 20% off if you wanna keep it permanently.

Also likely this will clash with the EA Access subscription since there's a ton of free games being offered by EA through that service. EA won't let MS add their games to this service then.

Thinking along the same lines, what if this is the beginning of the rise of subscription-based services ACROSS the board for video gaming? What if a year or two later we see MS come out with a $30/month subscription that covers ALL games being released for Xbox? Now that would be something I could get behind.

I dont know if its just me but the 10 bucks a month seems to be on the higher side at the moment especially for those already subscribed to GOLD. I think EA access does a pretty damn good job in terms of pricing. you can almost always get if for as low as 24 bucks for the 12 month membership and that's a steal right there. The few worthwhile games that i want from the game pass list at the moment, I'll be better off buying them instead of renting them.

Microsoft is adding seven games to its Xbox Game Pass program on July 1, including the Xbox One versions of Dead Island and Resident Evil 6. The monthly subscription service currently includes 112 Xbox One and backward compatible Xbox 360 titles.

Here are the six Xbox One games and one Xbox 360 game coming to Xbox Game Pass in July:

  • Dead Island Definitive Edition
  • Resident Evil 6
  • F1 2015
  • The Flame in the Flood
  • Guacamelee: Super Turbo Championship Edition
  • Bard's Gold
  • Monaco: What's Yours is Mine
Xbox Game Pass launched in June with a library of more than 100 titles. The program lets subscribers download and play select Xbox One and Xbox 360 titles for $9.99 per month.
