This tutorial will tech you how to give motion trail speeding effect to an object using motion blur. The tutorial is made in PS CS5.1 so you may find a few tools and effects in different place.
STEP 1
Choosing the appropriate stock image is important, it wont be correct to make a person having breakfast appear speeding away. i chose the image of a stationary car.
STEP 2
The next step is to duplicate the original layer, you can do this in many ways, select the layer to be duplicated in the layers pallet and press Ctrl+J or you can right click on the layer in the layers pallet and select duplicate layer or you can select the layer go to Layer>Duplicate Layer.
STEP 3
Now apply the motion blur effect Filter>Blur>Motion Blur to the duplicated layer.
The amount and angle of blur depends upon the image. For me these settings were right.
STEP 4
Your image appears to be all blurred but you want to apply the effect on the car.
Now apply a layer mask to this layer.Again there are different ways to apply layer masks but the easiest is to select the layer and click the apply layer mask button at the bottom of the layers pallet.
STEP 5
Now select the brush tool and select a brush, i used a soft edged brush but you can try different brushes according your needs (play around a bit with different brushes to get the hang of it). Make sure the layer mask is selected and the foreground colour is black (Black hides and white reveals, if you notice the layer mask is all white meaning the layer is all revealed). This method is very forgiving as you can use white as a foreground colour and retrive the blur effect you masked.
start brushing on the areas you dont want to be blurred and you will see black colour appears on the layer mask, you cange the opacity of the brush to achieve different result. i used 100% opacity for the scenery and 10% opacity near the wing mirror, wheel arches and headlamps.
As the picture was of a stationary car so everything else in the picture was stationary too so i decided to add blur to the wooden wall as well and here is the final result.
Hope you enjoyed this tutorial! Comments are appreciated.
