The Post-Rock Thread!

:guitar: Welcome to the world of Post-Rock! :guitar:

A world unlike any other. Where Instruments reign supreme, and the sheer compositions of harmonics outweigh the concept of lyrics & vocals. You will find yourself drifting into a valley of serenity, as the tunes sink deep within. Catalyzing peace within your mind, body & soul.

Excuse the Melodramatic intro, I just felt like writing it. :p Anyways almost all music forums have dedicated threads for Post-rock, and considering we don’t have one, I thought why not do the honors of initiating one.

Well most of the people out there are alien to the ‘post-rock’ genre, as it never hit the mainstream radar. However the situation is much different in present times as the genre is gaining momentum; the post-rock community grows rapidly. As for what is post-rock, according to wiki-
Post-rock is a subgenre of alternative rock and progressive rock[1] characterized by the use of instruments commonly associated with rock music, but using rhythms and "guitars as facilitators of timbre and textures" not traditionally found in rock. Post-rock musicians typically produce instrumental music
Technical terms aside, this genre does an absolutely marvelous job when it comes to musical expression. Post-rock holds true to the core values of music. I believe anyone who has a diverse taste in music should definitely check this genre out. It does take some getting used to but once you’re in tune, your playlists will have nothing but post-rock on repeat. :p

The main purpose of this thread is to discuss anything post-rock. I’ll try my best to keep the thread updated with all the latest developments. There will be an exclusive list for PG’s top rated post rock songs & there will also be a song of the week category that will be updated in the OP on a weekly basis, based on the number of likes the song receives. Here’s to hoping the thread lives to see such updates. :D

Song Of The Week

I'm linking a couple of tracks just to start things off! These tracks are pretty good, but trust me Post-rock has a lot more to offer, the best is yet to be revealed:drummer:. I shall update the thread with some awesome tracks later on. Feel free to share any Post-rock songs you like.

Maybeshewill - Relative Minors

Dead Red Sun - Facility

Explosions In The Sky- Your Hand In Mine

PG's Exclusive Post-rock reviews!

Spoiler: show
sleepmakeswaves - reviewed by Ahmad498
Spoiler: show

Band: Sleepmakeswaves
Album: ...and so we destroyed everything
Country: Australia

Tracklist:

1. to you they are birds, to me they are voices
in the forest
2. in limbs and joints
3. our time is short but your watch is slow
4. a gaze blank and pitiless as the sun
5. (hello) cloud mountain
6. now we rise and we are everywhere
7. we like you when you're awkward
8. ...and so we destroyed everything

Review: I thought it was going to be awesome but it was amazing ...

Sleepmakeswaves are relatively not new to the Post Rock. Their debut, In Today Already Walks Tomorrow was a decent introduction to their style of Post Rock. Over the last years, many post-rock bands have followed a generic follow of soft/loud/soft/loud/explosion/soft. Treating Post Rock as Post Rock is just not right. It needs to be treated just like any other music genre. And the most appealing part was the exploration and limitless bounds. So if bands follow the formula to fit their music appropriately, well, they are just doing the same old thing that we have heard so many times. Predictability was the sole reason people blamed the new wave of Post Rock being stale. But that's changing dramatically. And one of the bands contributing to this change is sleepmakeswaves.

Famous for their hate of spell-check, the band drives the exciting music of Post-Rock. Sleepmakeswaves are very upfront in this album. Your ear will get caught from the first song. They have this ability to cross these lush ambient melodies with slices of loud dynamic sections. To be precise, they like to play around. And it's what captivates the listener.

What really impresses is the tone of their style. Like And So I Watch You From Afar they don't fall into post-rock mode. They do their own thing. Many past influences can be heard here, but they come together beautifully. The album simply never lets you go. There are segments where you dive straight in and then there are moments where you feel spaced out. The biggest change I found was the production. Every track has been given a blessing. Putting out so many instruments and in such a wonderful manner is really commendable. The title track is the best example for that.

The artwork, the song titles and the band name itself is what you would expect from a typical Post Rock band. But the music is anything but typical. Although it doesn't re-invent the Post-Rock we love, it simply rules over it. Provides an amazing soundscape in such a remarkable atmosphere.

I finally got the time to post some new post-rock releases, and I thought no one would pay attention to it. But to my surprise, I'm not alone. At last! I have a post-rock friend. This is the most under-rated genre of non-mainstream music. I'll post some of my all time favs. But soon! Prolly in 1-2 hours!

Recent Post-Rock digs.

Chillness on a whole new level. These songs are my daily fixes. You can really appreciate the effort. Post-Rock maybe all instrumental, but it dominates exploration of creativity. First song by Maybeshewill just puts a smile on my face, and that's just great. Second song is based on such a simple rthym, and builds up so profoundly. Finally the last song covers an epic landscape. Defines what I mean by post-rock.

Couldn't agree more. As under-rated it maybe it certainly is a gem of genre. It gives a new blood line to music in the recent wake of commercialization, where the core essence of music has deviated & succumbed to more superficial means. Post-rock is true to the core of music, and delivers on so many levels.

I too have been hooked to Red Paper Lanterns for quite some time, in fact the whole album is awesome! The rest two songs you've linked are down right Epic, loved them.

Creativity is the best aspect of Post-rock, you aren't limited by any particular frame of reference and that's just awesome. Endless possibilities = constant evolution = no stagnation = Post-rock will live forever! :D

Glad to know you're a fan! :)

The albums you've listed, are definitely some of the great ones in the genre. I've been following Explosions of the sky rather closely, the rest I've just bumped into occasionally. Never went through the complete albums, but I shall be checking out all the albums you've linked in due time.

Necro posted the classics. The only band he's missing is Mono. :D

Oceansize's Effloresce is one hell of an album. You should really check that out.

BTW the new album by Explosions in the Sky was really disappointing. But a LOT, and I mean A LOT of bands have fortunately saved post-rock this year. So far here's best of 2011 Post-Rock:

Vessels - Helioscope

Kokomo - If Wolves

ASIWYFA - Gangs

Grails - Deep Politics

I've heard great things about Vessels. Will definitely be checking it out with the rest.

So Ahmad, any plans for some detailed reviews? I'm thinking of creating a separate section for Post-Rock reviews in the OP, PG exclusive of course. So your input is essential, since this is pretty much your department.

And you're very right about how the relatively newer bands have kept the Post-rock scene alive. They've done a splendid job.

:guitar: GIANTS :guitar:

Giants is a 5 piece post-rock instrumental band hailing from Cedar Falls, Iowa. They deliver melodic, instrumental, and slightly atmospheric rock that is reminiscent of contemporaries without sounding derivative. Their sophomore album, "Old Stories" was released by Cavity Records.

This song is Epic, shows just how much potential there is to the genre. With every new band springing out there, you can very well hope to see Post-rock breaking through the mainstream barriers.

I had no idea about those album's status in their genre. Like I said, I only listened to some selective bands long time ago. Good to know I didn't miss the best :)

@Ahmad: Will get those albums soon.

Yea I will. I'll start with Vessels. Just need some proper time for it. Summer vacations can be tedious you know. ;)

Never thought I'd see a post-rock thread on a forum as massive as PG haha.

Either way, I used to be a big post-rock fan when I started listening to it around '04, but have slightly gotten bored with a lot of the genre. Not in the sense that there's no good post-rock out there anymore (there is) but just that for some reason I think I dove too heavily into it. Anyway, some great bands here! And I actually loved Take Care Take Care Take Care.

Also, I make music :p Not post-rock per se, but it's ambient/instrumental stuff. Do check it out! http://asfandyarkhan.bandcamp.com and http://soundcloud.com/asfandyarkhan

Lemme know your thoughts and all boys.

Props to Total Overdose for creating a Post-Rock thread. I had only been introduced to the genre when took the 'music break', so I haven't properly listened to the genre to make a proper verdict. But I did like GBY!BE and Explosions and Sigur Ros (sp?).
I agree with Ahmed on Post-Rock being one of the most under-rated genre in non-mainstream music.

Anywany, Sorry for this utterly useless post. Just wanted to show you guys some respect for your awesome tastes in music! :D

Oh come on now Benighted, your post is not even remotely useless, it's great to have your input in the thread. (y) Here's to hoping that you overcome your an-hedonism soon, and get right back on track. Your return is quite overdue now. :p

Moonlit Sailor

Moonlit Sailor is a four piece indie-postrock band from Borås, Sweden. the band started out as an indie rock band in late 2006 when the members were only 16-18 years old. the band had a new interesting indie rock sound, often described as melodic, emotional and powerfull.
Moonlit Sailor - Weekday Escape

This song is from their latest album, Colors In Stereo. The track is truly amazing, everything about it is awesome. If you have an ear for Explosions in the sky, you'll definitely like it.

You reap what you sow. This is what happens when you take away choice from consumers. Even with 88% split going to developers, they can't recoup costs. Meanwhile, Helldivers 2 is a massive hit for Sony thanks in big part to Steam.
