Just 10 Mbps? How are they going to compete with other ISP's? Even local area providers offer upto 30 Mbps nowadays. Why do I feel like this is going be a fail project like Qubee.

They are providing it under 2000 including all taxes. Which ISP provides unlimited 10 Mbps in 2k including tax?

Did not one of us mentioned here 2K price including tax? If not than my apologies

Got hold of their CS team using chat. Interestingly, they are offering upto 20 Mbps in just Rs.3000 including tax. But it will take a lot of time for them to expand. Not even a single street is covered. Just two appartments in the whole of Karachi. I was hoping they would start from DHA, Clifton first covering street by street first. Nevertheless, good to know there will be more competition in the broadband market.

Well than its good. Speed is not the issue because they can even provide 1 GB speed through same FTTH network later if they want. Main issue is expansion, because getting way of right in Pakistan is real PITA.

2 things.
1. How on Earth were you able to get hold of their chat agent? I've always waited and given up.

2. There's still no mention of taxes in the pic.

Fiberlink does.

I pay 24k including taxes yearly for 25mbps connection. 2k per month for 25mbps unlimited connection.

No one can beat Fiberlink so far in terms of packages.

Lol seriously. Fiberlink takes a year to provide connection after receiving advance. You could have been lucky but go check Fiberlink reviews online. I will even rate PTCL higher than Fiberlink.

It depends upon location, in hyderabad, most of the time it works great. There are some downtimes but not major.
Same applies for Ptcl, when i had ptcl's 4mb dsl, it was also better in terms of uptimes.

PTA and Govt is bullying Telecom operators over license renewal. Telecom operators should pull off from license renewal and ask all 2G users to get 3G/4G phones if they want to continue using their services. And they should invest renewal money to expand 3G/4G infrastructure.

Very difficult as millions of people still use feature phones in Pak shedding 2G will be very difficult, hell I have to use 2G only most of the time for voice calls to work

That is why PTA is blackmailing Telecom operators. What if they decide not to renew license? Govt can not force them, they can only block their 2G spectrum. Millions of 2G users will break Govt's head before purchasing 3G/4G phones.

DIRBS is a joke. The guys at PTA are also a joke (who now say social media should be blocked to clamp down on blasphemy...). The spectrum guys are a joke.

I'm sort of on the side of zafarabbasrizvi on this one - except, what they've done in some European countries is sunset the 3G networks and retained 2G and 4G, whilst launching VoLTE.

If our operators (all four of them) can start mas VoLTE, then problem solved. They don't need to renew the 3G license.

But wait, 3G is not in the question - it's 2G and 4G. And if the QoS standards were not revised, I'm pretty sure operators wouldn't have this issue - since later on in the article, it says the rollout obligations and costs are a double whammy ("In this respect, the licensees’ persistent stance has been that the issue of quality of service and rollout obligations is dependent on the value of renewal fee of the licenses. This is mainly due to the fact that higher the license renewal fee, lesser the amount operators will be able to spend on infrastructure to meet minimum quality benchmarks.")

Price per megahertz for 900Mhz: $39.5M. 1800Mhz: $29.5M

Jazz has Warid (4.8) and Mobilink (7.6Mhz).
4G: 3Mhz (from 4.8Mhz - left with 1.8Mhz for 2G).
3G: 5Mhz (from 7.6Mhz - left with 2.6Mhz for 2G).
2G: 2.6Mhz + 1.8Mhz = 4.4Mhz.

If they dump Warid's holding, and convert their 3G to 4G (and shrink 4G down to 3Mhz so 4.6Mhz is reserved for 2G), then they could save $189.6M... but they'd only do this if they're actually serious about their voice call quality and VoLTE.

Telenor has 4.8Mhz (900Mhz) and 8.8Mhz (1800Mhz).
I don't think they have a lot of wiggle room.

Zong has 7.6Mhz (2G) and 22.6Mhz (1800Mhz).
They've got 2.6Mhz spare for 2G on 1800Mhz, which I've read they can't use (it was given to them as compensation) since their 900Mhz band is "dirty", especially near Lahore, so they can sunset those frequencies (they do use 900Mhz in most other places, IIRC). Besides, they have the largest proportion of 3G and 4G customers (around 50%, perhaps - I've stopped updating the numbers for some months now to check) so they could sunset their 2G network (since in the few places they've using CA, it's with 2100Mhz, and not 900Mhz). They could save $300.2 M. I don't think they use their 900Mhz spectrum at all, so they could be the biggest beneficiary of this dump.

Ufone have a lot of 3G sites on 900Mhz, but they're also choked in 1800Mhz (because of 4G) so they won't necessarily benefit. I've also noted that I tend to see more 3G sites on 900Mhz for Ufone than on 2100Mhz... so they could CA 2100Mhz and 1800Mhz for 4G? But then, why is Ufone still relevant?

Zong could benefit the most from this saved money and actually use it in their network. Or give it to me instead. Jazz could also benefit. But the other two operators are starved for spectrum.

---

In other news... wait, I'll make a separate post for that.

After trialing Telenor at my work and on the highway and at my home, I decided not to take it.

- Calls don't generally fall back to 2G. In one route (the main route I take), there are two spots where the call falls down to 2G. It's not at the same spots as Mobilink's drops are, but they exist. In the other route, there was one spot. And ironically, for both operators, the calls drop when the signal levels are strong.
- Mobilink, on my floor, drops onto 2G like a gangster during a call. Telenor used to drop to 2G on my PREVIOUS floor (one floor up) but not on this floor (significantly lesser). On Mobilink, it falls down within a minute of the call. Telenor? It takes its own time.
- 2G voice: really, no rhyme nor reason. Both are crap indoors. Outdoors, both are similar. When a call falls down from 3G to 2G, the chances of garbling are higher (though there are moments when it doesn't garble). So on this aspect, both are similar. But since Telenor falls less to 2G during calls, the chances of getting bad voice quality is less (and more for Mobilink). In short: all operators are alike unless they disable 2G permanently. Some fall down to 2G much faster than the others.
- 3G on both operators: where DC HSPA is working, speeds on Mobilink are naturally higher. Telenor's 3G isn't that bad now. Mobilink also suffers from slow 3G speeds - it all depends on the antenna and the concrete/line of sight.
4G on Telenor has been giving me a minimum of 4Mbps, averages between 10 and 20Mbps, and peaked up to around 45Mbps. Mobilink's average is 20-30Mbps or so, and minimum has been around 6Mbps (not on poor signal, but on piss-poor signal). Telenor, on piss-poor signals, varies - sometimes, it's 6Mbps, sometimes it's 1Mbps. Can't really say - but it's usable. Just not as fast as Mobilink despite the carrier aggregation.
- Telenor doesn't cover the whole city. Case in point: Bahria Town isn't completely covered. Sector E, F (and onwards), Abubakar Block, Japan Road (the road behind DHA Sector F, going to DHA 3) has either poor coverage or no coverage. F-8/4 is another spot (weak indoors, or nonexistent on the ground floor) The others cover. there

And it's literally the last point for which, I've decided to not move to Telenor. Otherwise, I know I won't get super fast speeds everywhere, but it's definitely usable speeds, and calls are relatively stable (unlike the mess Mobilink has become).

I initially restricted myself to Telenor because (1) they have indoor antennas at places, and (2) they've generally got a fairly well-managed network so connectivity is present (and sometimes, even on weak 3G signals, their speeds are fairly decent). But since their coverage is shoddy within the urban centers (in some spots, it's not that it's weak - it's just not there!), you really can't depend on getting connectivity everywhere within a city (not even 2G).

So it's either Mobilink or Zong (the latter don't have indoor antennas, as far as I know). But Zong's postpaid packages are expensive for my use case (12GB, ~400 off-net minutes) vs. my current plan on Mobilink or what Telenor would give. Or if I hold on and see Telenor improve their coverage, then I probably will shift.

So in essence - Telenor seems to have reduced the clogging in their network given the spectrum, but they now lack coverage in all parts of a city. Otherwise, I don't think people would have a problem with Telenor if they could fix their coverage holes or make it dense (it's spread out - in an attempt to cover more geographical areas - but not dense).

Given the spectrum renewal issues going on, I wonder what will happen. Lots of variables are at play.
