PRISONERS (2013)

"Its a War against God!"

Its just another kids-got-abducted-parents-worried thingy. As always, its dark, creepy, extremely suspenseful and disturbing, as much as it can be. The problem with this specific genre is that you can only do it so many ways. The feeling of an ominous and morally questionable atmosphere gets stronger in some, while it remains sub-par in the other. So what exactly does Prisoners make any different than the usual lot? Well, two things. 1) Same director as "Enemy (2013)", "Denis Villeneuve", whose direction literally beats Memento in Enemy (2013) ... and 2) Ensemble cast, dominated by characters like Loki (Jake Gyllenhaal), a determined, dutiful and motivated detective.

First hour builds up the tense atmosphere so well that our temptation grows stronger, and the hopeless feeling makes you start to care for its characters. Some more than the others, like Keller (Hugh Jackman). The only problem is, supporting cast becomes irrelevant to a point where they look like a-bunch-of-characters-crying, and nothing else. But, i think its Loki (Jake G.) who steals the show. Its revolting to see his erratic blinking, with a suppressed wolf hidden inside, waiting to nab some suspects. 'Look at his quietly angry face when he was arresting Bob Taylor'. And you can see his determination when ...
- He was rushing towards hospital emergency, bleeding from his own head. Thanks to the fantastic OST, which builds up our emotion. Mind you, that made me go in a 'nails biting' mode. What a frantic moment, and one of the best shots i have seen in a long time.
- "Why don’t you do me a favor Captain and GO FUCK YOURSELF."
I loved Holly's sick, cold and ruthless character. Melissa Leo was such a discreet psychopath. And she goes out with a bang too.

The ending of Prisoners, well simply incredible. Its often we see such material end with obviousness. But If you look around the predictability, you'll notice the awesome cinematography. Damn, this should've won an award for it.
Spoiler: show
Keller blowing a whistle in the background, asking for help ... and that look in Loki's face.

The thing is, it delivers nothing new. But it does it in a 'new way'. Some thought provoking questions about this justice system, and the morality of the affectees are obvious, but the movie doesn't pick them up ... and leaves it to its viewers to decide that. Like Keller becoming sadistic slowly, inflicting pain to get some answers. But the whole movie stands on Jake Gyllenhaal's shoulders. So personally, its him making the best character of them all. Honestly, the plot holds a value and the cinematography is near perfect. It'd be stupid to not like this movie, or at least be sucked in its crazy world. Its 8/10 from me.

The Purge: Anarchy.

"This is your Emergency Broadcast System announcing the commencement of the Annual Purge. At the siren, all crime, including murder, will be legal for 12 hours. All emergency services will be suspended. Your government thanks you for your participation."

I really dig the concept of this franchise. Loved it in the first part, loved it in this one too.

This time, we are shown how the Purge affects the more common folks and what is the situation on the streets in the big cities, which is miles better than showing a Rich family with stupid kids dealing with their screw ups. There are three stories which combine later on. A couple gets stranded just before the purge near downtown; A mother and a daughter being attacked during the purge; A badass father out for revenge. Aside from the father, I didn't really like the characters but he was sufficient enough.

Where this movie excels is depicting the horrors of the purge and how humans can easily loose their morality when something becomes legal. The legality of murder adds this weird creepiness in the movie. We also get to see some political stuff, resistances etc.

The movie did had some pacing issues. I felt the middle portion bogged down a bit. Also, the characters drama was meh for the most part.

I would love to see they expand on this world, show us a part about how corporations, the Government etc handles/deals with the purge etc. Much better than the first part.

7/10

V/H/S: A fount footage collection of multiple horror/weird stories, this movie was a hit and a miss overall. Some stories were good, while others lame, which made the overall experience uneven and not that good. Still, the found footage style with some good stuff really made for good creepy moments here and there. My favourite segment was the last one, the "Haunted House", it was actually great.
6.5/10

V/H/S 2: Following the same formula as the first part, we get some more different fount footage stories. This time, the stories were more fast paced and shorter which I kinda didn't like since the slower pace and the longer stories made some build up in the previous part. However, one story in this part named "Safe haven" just blew me away, it was awesome. I was WTF-ing the whole time when shit started to hit the fan, weird, scary and just plain creepy.
6.8/10 (1 for the awesome segment)

Oculus: It felt more like a creepy mystery thriller than a horror movie. The movie, being slow paced in the start, kept me interesting thanks to its plot. I was always wondering what will happen next and how will they do this and that and WTH is that mirror etc.
7/10

Earth to echo: E.T meets Super 8 but lower in quality and with found footage style. Still, it was an enjoyable movie and movie had a good focus on friendship and how important it is. The kid actors, while not being that good, weren't bad either. The alien, Echo, was adorable. Got a bit boring in the middle but it made up for it in the last act. Some really cool scenes near the end.
7/10

THE BREAK-UP (2006)

"Rainbow Connection"

Classic case of a break-up. Gary (Vince Vaughn) loves Brooke (Jennifer Aniston) very much but 'doesn't really take his guard down to do what the person he loves would want to do'. She feels unappreciated, to a point where she'd 'not want to spend her life with an inconsiderate prick' ... and offers a break-up first, which they take. Then see them fighting for material things like children, playing the annoy-game. Whoever annoys more, would win. And this is where it gets really really interesting, amusing and at many points hilarious.

We see them argue over petty issues, talk about 'sexual habits of family members', 'fight about condo space ownership'. She gets him 'kicked off of the Couple's bowling team'. He 'buys a pool table' puts it in his loving room, and plays with his Band of Brothers. She brings guys over for a date to make him feel jealous, but his 'cool-guy' play pays off ('Her new date joining Gary in Video Game' was actually a very lul-worthy moment). But then he brings hookers over for a Strip-Poker party. She pushes him for a change, but it gets worse, and the condo has to be sold ... until both of them realize their mistake.

And now we enter the typical emotional phase. They confront, they condole. They cry, and make promises. They complicate stuff, she doesn't feel the same way for him, he understands ... and they leave. She goes on a trip of Europe, he sorts his sh*t out. We move to a mature ending ... which frankly, i loved the most. 'happy-ever-after' stuff but so discreet.

Yes it doesn't have a special comedic value, but the moments Vaughn and Aniston spend together, are gold. I loved their little fights, and arguments. Heck i can attest to some of them myself :p You won't understand if you have never been though such type of phases in your life, so forever-alone dudes! Keep Distance. Basically all attempts to make each other jealous do bring a smile on your face. (Don't forget the 'PG-13 moments of Aniston's ass'). The whole break-up phase is lightweight, which is good because it doesn't make you cry, while still provoke enough emotions to make you 'feel the moment'. Vaughn's energy keeps you active. Jason Batement and Jon Favreau have small but (literally) friendly roles. Justin Long loves to play gay, i wonder why. 7/10. Very good entertainment. Aniston is a terrific actress.

Like I stated. 021 is not for the masses,it's not a crowd pleaser. It has a slow pace/build up but everything makes sense in the end.If you like political spy thrillers like Body of Lies,Syriana and Spy Game. Then 021 is your cup of tea.People have been comparing it with WAAR. Infact it's quite the opposite. It's an intelligent film. Not mindless eye candy.

THE ACCIDENTAL HUSBAND (2008)

~ "You don’t have to be so right all the time."

When you are giving Love Advice to people you don't even know personally, chances are you are piss off a lot of hurt souls. Dr.Emma Floyd (Uma Thurman) does exactly that while preaching about Real Love vs Romantic Love. Patrick's (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) girlfriend breaks up their marriage and leaves him. Ouch. So Patrick follows the Tit for Tat, hacks into public records, and 'marries with Emma'. Nice idea to take revenge from 'it'. -.-

Little did he knew, that trying to knock her down a peg, should would 'grow on him'. So the following series of events are nothing short of silly, and amusing. Emma gets drunk in a bar with his accidental husband Patrick, and crashes at his place. Her life becomes ... well, challenged. Meanwhile he takes her to an indian party to have a good time, where her 'thing for firemen' takes over. Basically, thats a slow process of them falling in love, because being her husband and she his wife, he had a vested interest to see her happy.

"Girls are way into honesty". So to cover up all the lies, a truth is needed. And when she finds out, we see some complications arise, thankfully light hearted and not overly dramatic. She eventually makes a choice, leaving his boyfriend Richard (Colin Firth) 'who loves her but is clever enough to know when I am lost'. Glad to see him not act like a typical ass hole, as usually happens in such movies. Patrick finally 'drives into the sunset', with the 'Passed out lady that he carries around sometimes'.

Its a silly, but is mildly amusing, and fun. How does Uma Thurman generates so much energy? :S She is electric in every scene. Jeffrey Dean playing a loveable cool guy was relaxing. Colin Firth has his ultimate charm with him. Greta (Isabella Rossellini) had such a fantastic personality  6/10. Its mild entertainment. Apart from some awkward Indian Party moments or bad voice overs, I enjoyed it fully.

BAD COUNTRY (2014)

"This ain't about business"

1980 settings, tremendous mustaches, cheese, and a Hell with the lid off. A Louisiana cop Bud (Willem Dafoe) busts contract killer Jesse (Matt Dillon), turns him, his employer finds out and sh*t goes haywire. We have some FBI bozo 'federally' f*cking-up the entire operation, and there is a wife Lynn (Amy Smart), 'something for Jesse to come home to'. Basically nothing what we haven't already seen in many other similar movies. Typical of buddy cop movies.

I like the consistent 1980's setting of Bad Country, all styling, cars, infrastructure, 'Sand niggers'. Action scenes are organized good, but were poorly shot and managed. 'The near-finale scene where Bud and his team raids that hotel to capture Lutin', you can feel the intensity of the thrilling situation, but the weak cinematography holds it back.

Matt Dillon isn't doing his best. But his worst is doing just fine. Take a look at his straight face when 'cops are taking his wife to hospital', or when
Spoiler: show
'he is dying'.
I for one think those are 'discreetly' priceless shots. Amy Smart looks better in sexy roles. Holding an infant in her arms, trying to make faces didn't help much. But her 'exit' was as much powerful as Jesse's.

This couldn't been a GREAT movie, but i guess the death of Director in post production sequence had a little impact on the final product. Still, the end result isn't so bad to fret over. It has a strong & good plot, which works every time, with a slightly twisted but satisfying ending. I still liked it, and enjoyed it very much. 6/10

EDGE OF TOMORROW (2014)

"Full Metal Abuses will lead to ban"

"An enemy who knows the future, can't lose." And what if the enemy is Alien Mimics? Well, then you are destined to get f*cked ... *kevin-hart-style* All Day. Every Day. Just you, by yourself. At the beach, holding down, Trying to race, straight face. NOT A GAME Gentlemen. Aliens Cheat. Resetting the day every time they are about to lose. Alien Niggerz. Like a gawdamn Thug.

Live.Die.Repeat tag line is enough to explain what Edge of Tomorrow exactly is. I am not gonna talk about the Rules of the game here, or how a 'Major' Deserter (Tom Cruise) steals the Mimic's hive mind Omega's power, and resets the day. But the way he turns the tide following countless resets, to defeat the enemy, Countless resets, watching his companions die, Countless resets, in failure, Countless resets, of Sorrow, watching someone 'he'd-wished-to-not-know, but did', die ... Even for a movie, this is a Magnet, to start caring for its characters. And if Emily Blunt is the 'Full Metal Abuses will lead to ban', then you better have some love in your eyes because nothing can stop the high-powered romance discreet romance between the two.

Spoiler: show
Basically, Kill the Blue Mimic, and Omega will reset the day, because this alien has access to Omega's nervous system. And Cage (Cruise) does kill one accidentally, with a claymore 'in his face'. Blue Mimic's blood transferred its ability to him, and Omega resets the day ... for the first time, with Cruise (a new host for it). After that, 'movie' happens. The ending is whats confusing some. I am just gonna copy a random comment from internet to ease your pain ... "When he absorbs the Omega's blood in Paris it's the night before the big assault so, following the established rules, he jumps back a day which would be during the helicopter ride to meet the General". There is no "tricks" involved. Its as simple as it is.

A couple of key moments, and some i loved the most:
Spoiler: show

- The moment where Cage does shoot himself while confronting that Blue Mimic but nothing happens, so he dies by drowning himself.
- Everytime Cage meets with the J-Squad, and he was a new man every time. Awesome FUN seeing him 'try every possible attitude'.
- I have having the laugh of my life everytime she shoots Cage in the head, or takes out her gun to do it.
- "Have you tried 'all' the options"? How many times?
- "Never been with 2 girls at same time" argument. Hm, Logical.

Beach scene is such a lively, intense, and stimulating experience. It makes sense because we visit that area many times after a Reset. Not only that, the 'feeling' that whole world is at war seemed authentic. The 'threat' could be felt packing maximum danger. Thanks to those scary Mimic Punks. Have to say Mimic are well thought out, and well made. Its not often when we see the threat so ... intimidating and frigging dangerous. Praise the CGI involved, which made them ... well, READ. YIKES. Also, all the metal Exoskeleton action was just bad ass, especially when the AW3200 guns come into action. Fantastic CGI, plus satisfying battleground setting. "No courage without fear".

Its a Perfect blend of dark humor, romance and science fiction. The actors deserve the most praise. Tom Cruise is so brilliantly committed to his characters, as he has been in Oblivion (2013), Jack Reacher (2012). His consistency is admirable. Emily Blunt was as powerful and strong as Cruise. I can respect that both actor struggled hard waring those metal suits, and Emily for one trained for 3 months to get in shape. Not to mention, the beautiful chemistry and engaging relationship both share together on screen.

The very idea of Edge of Tomorrow is fascinating ... and above all its made SO SIMPLE to understand and digest that you don't waste time in "trying to figure it out". No tricks to make it unnecessarily complex. End Result is nothing but EXTREME FUN. There was a grin on my face ALL the time, and after seeing the end, which thankfully wasn't overly dramatic, but had good emotional side to it ... i had nothing but a round of applause for it. FRIGGING LOVED IT. L.O.V.E.D. IT.

Deep down, i still hate the use of Shaky Cams, and that is what stops you from having steady orgasms while watching Edge of Tomorrow. I also didn't like the fact that the movie becomes "darker", I mean Literally. Due to 'night time', it was difficult to 'clearly' see what was happening. Apart from these two minor ... hiccups, i don't have any complaints. Because the fun was still Tremendous.

Last but not the least, this movie gives me hope that PG13 rated movies can still be hell of a fun. It doesn't have to be vulgar, overly erotic/sexy, or memento/inception level difficult to be THIS awesome. This is FUN. This is ULTIMAT Entertainment. This is ... REMARKABLE. 10/10 Its a movie that I'd watch again and again for many months, and would still not get bored.

See No Evil 2...............(6/10) well it was a pointless sequel after a gap of 8 years, bad acting, bad storyline, just for time pass! The girl who played Tamara did some funny acting!!

The Purge 2................(7.5/10) a much better sequel of first part, focused more on other people instead of just one dumb family, btw I really dig the whole concept of this series!!

Saw waar 5.5/10.

I dont remember watching a complete pakistani movie. I was disappointed and a bit shocked because I read a lot about it being one of the best movies but it wasn't that good. Poor script and poor direction.

I dont think i will be watching a pakistani movie anytime soon... (O21 may have a chance, i maybe disappointed again).

They should hire Psychologist for better movie making.
