Hey guys,

So, I'm trying to play games on my general purpose PC and I noticed that the CPU temperatures get extremely high when I'm gaming. I have only tested Resident Evil 6 at high settings on my machine, and the temperature was hovering above 85C. The game ran fine for hours, though. No noticeable issues whatever.

I think my stock Intel CPU cooler might be the problem. But, I'm an amateur with computers, and there are three problems I need to deal with before I can get a cooler:

1. It must be small enough to fit in my case.
2. It should be easy to install. There is no way I'm gonna remove my entire motherboard for this.
3. Where the hell can I find such a cooler + a good thermal paste in Karachi?

My PC is something like this:

Processor: Core it 650
Chassis: ?
Mobo: Intel DQ57TM
Budget: 3.5k

Pls help guys. Much appreciated.

Gracias.

To filter out the recommendation, we need to know your Processor model, PC chassis and finally, the budget.

Intel's stock heatsink fan is more than adequate for non overclockable CPUs like yours. Instead of buying a CPU cooler, clean your PC by a blower, take out the heatsink fan and clean it thoroughly. After that, you need to remove the old thermal paste on the CPU and reapply a new one (just a pea size amount will do) then reseat your heatsink fan and you are good to go. You can also install some case fans to lower your overall PCs temperature.

So in short you will have to buy thermal paste and maybe a case fan (depends on how many fans you have installed in your case)

The whole method is very easy.. I followed a YouTube video the first time I had to do it.

Good luck : )

What Iampasha posted will most probably work for your processor. Intel Stock fan is good enough to handle and control the temperatures for the processor (Core i5 650) having almost similar specs as Core i3 530.
I have used a couple of Core i3 1st generation processor, and I don't remember using an Aftermarket cooler. Yes, get a quality thermal paste from market.

Thanks a lot guys. Very helpful.

Any ideas where I can find a good quality thermal paste and any specific brand I should look for?

Also, what should I use when removing the old thermal paste on the CPU? Some video I saw suggested Isopropyl Alcohol. Wth is that in desi terms, so I can ask the shop guy without him giving me a weird look? :D

Thanks again, guys. Really appreciate it.

I think cleaning can be done using a cloth but I do with Pads. If you want to use them, then just go to Medical Store and ask for "Alcohol Pads". The pads are saturated with Isopropyl Alcohol about 70%. Just get the box it will cost you around 200rs. for 200 pcs or 100rs. for 100 pcs. Clean the chip and heatsink base nicely with Alcohol pad.

For thermal paste, get cooler master one in the below link.

I'd not get any of these, but since you're at i5 650, one of them will just do well. Cooler Master MasterGel Maker Nano and Arctic Silver 5 are one of the best but they would cost you around 1200 Rs. Since you're not into overclocking, you do not need to spend high on Thermal paste.

Thanks, guys. I'll try squeezing in fresh thermal paste. Hope that works.

Btw, I forgot to mention that my idle CPU temps are not that bad (around 44C). The jump from 44 to 85C+ during gaming seems like a lot.

Okay, so I was totally not confident about taking off the stock sink and reapplying new paste, so I just tried blowing away the dust inside first. It was a total mess. All the fans were clogged up with layers of dirt and fur.

And with that my temps have come down from a max of 94C to a max of 58C.

Problem solved.
