I searched for an English source, but I couldn't find one. This press release just came out today, so an English source may take some time.
Basically it says that "We [Square-Enix] have acquired the Unreal Engine 3 middleware from Epic Games to help in the development process of video games"
They go on to explain who Epic is and what the Unreal Engine 3 is and how it is usually used in the United States. They say that they will be using the latest version of Unreal Engine 3 which is known for its excellent balance of quality and development efficiency.
They go on to say later in the press release that they are licensing this engine to help them develop games with higher efficiency and higher quality. They say that with the way new platforms work (multi-core CPUs etc...) they have to take a different stance on game development than before and the Unreal Engine 3 will assist them in keeping "up to date" and will also help in the development of their own game development tools.
Thanks to Neogaf
