Sony PlayStation 5 : Play Has No Limits

PS5 Release Date, PS5 Games, PS5 Power vs Xbox One X, PS5 Price Speculation - All the PS5 Info lets discuss

Here are all the rumors and speculation surrounding the PS5, including a potential PS5 release date, power, and launch games of Sony's inevitable PS5. Is the PS5 releasing in 2019?

What we Want From the PS5 Speculation aside, what would we ideally want from the PS5? Backwards compatibility for PS4 games would be brilliant, simply because you'd be able to carry over classics like the Shadow of the Colossus remake to the next console generation. We've seen how well Microsoft is handling backwards compatibility with its Xbox One consoles (including getting amazing results updating Xbox 360 games to run in 4K on Xbox One X), and something similar on PS5 would be great.

In terms of pure power, the PlayStation 5 has to significantly exceed the power of the Xbox One X. This means featuring more games running in 4K at 60FPS. If the PS5 can deliver about 10 TF of power we'd be happy, as this would allow devs to create games that look a generation ahead of what we've got now.

But what would the dream launch lineup be for the PS5? Death Stranding and The Last of Us: Part 2 are hugely anticipated blockbuster games, with the former especially looking to push the performance of whatever system it's on to the very limit. We've also mentioned Ghost of Tsushima and a sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn, and the latter would be the perfect way to kick off a new console cycle from Sony.

$500 is a bad idea. I'd stick to the $400 sweet spot if I were them. Yes, people buy $1000 PCs and phones, but they have more utility than a game console.

Some of these times are ridiculously long (even for Skyrim) and I'm really glad I invested in a USB SSD for my Pro when I bought it, lol.
I probably should've done the same. The stock hdd load times can get pretty lengthy in open world games. Either way, I'm glad Sony's HW team is paying attention to this area. It should also help in reducing hitching/stuttering seen in certain games when loading a new area.

Team $399 to $449.99

I honestly don't think Sony will make a stupid PR blunder by making it $499.

Unless we have multiple SKU's. I can see the cheaper one's being $399 and higher end one's being $499

But the PS5 is probably going to cost $499. High speed memory and SSDs are not cheap.
I think that kind of a launch price would be a mistake akin to the PS3's launch (which Sony learned from and remedied with PS4). There's no point in trying to sell an expensive technical box when your competitor is selling something similar and comparable that is cheaper. As long as the PS5 boasts an upgrade worthy of a "generational leap" (which would be something advanced than the PS4, and something comparable to the competition), I don't think it is necessary at all to also come up with the most high-tech stuff available in the industry (this could be done with later versions like PS5 Pro).

The competitor is the next Xbox though not One X. I don't expect a blunder like PS3 pricing but $399 just doesn't seem likely based on the specs being hinted at even for next year launch. Unless Sony is prepared to sell at a huge loss and undercut MS.

MS is looking to break the convention by launching multiple models with different specs and pricing, so I don't think it would make sense for Sony to undercut them based on hardware. Based on what has been said by Spencer, these aren't likely to be simple SKUs with different hard drive sizes and I/O features.

Sony isn't in a financial position to bear a loss on ever console sold. They'll likely break even at launch.

This discussion about breaking even is such a moot point. Almost every console (except Nintendo consoles) are sold at a loss initially. They make it up with software, it's been like that since the PS1 days. With the things the Wired article mentioned (hardware based ray tracing, high quality SSD etc) I won't be surprised if Sony is banking on taking a hit in the first year or two to get a bigger install base out of the gate.

Up until 2010, Sony was selling PS3's at a loss on manufacturing price ($337) versus retail ($299 Slim at that time).

Even PS4 probably shipped at a loss but nowhere near that of the PS3. Cutting down on the loss is the reason both Sony and MS have partnered with AMD and opted to base their hardware on off-the-shelf components.

Current mid-gen refreshes were selling "4K" gaming. Next-gen consoles will actually be 4K ready. Keeping that in mind what will the next mid-gen refresh aim towards? Kind of makes sense to have a more capable machine ready at launch instead of another low to mid-range PC.

[h=1]PlayStation 5 sounds expensive, but Sony says it has an ‘appealing’ price point[/h]
[h=2]With great power comes a great pricetag?[/h]

Just as soon as PlayStation’s hardware architect opened up about Sony’s next console came questions of what that will cost. The Wired writer who first reported Sony’s plans put that question to Mark Cerny, and the answer is … it’s probably gonna cost more.
Cerny, PlayStation’s lead architect, did not say that directly. But yesterday on Twitter, Wired’s Peter Rubin shared an unpublished exchange with him:
Rubin: there’s always been a general range of launch pricing. Will the next console hew to that range?
Cerny: I believe that we will be able to release it at [a suggested retail price] that will be appealing to gamers in light of its advanced feature set.
Rubin: Meaning that it may cost a bit more, but what you’re getting is well worth it?
Cerny: That’s about all I can say.
Rubin’s article described a “PlayStation 5” (official name not official yet) sporting a solid-state drive, and a CPU and graphics hardware supporting ray tracing, 8K resolutions and a new “3D audio” technology. The unit will also be backward compatible with PlayStation 4 games and support PlayStation VR.

It stands to reason that, based on the components needed, if not also inflation, the next PlayStation will cost more than the PlayStation 4 did when it launched in 2013 at $399.99. Of course, that pricing was likely motivated by the widely mocked launch pricing of $599 in 2006 ($755 in today’s money). Cost was one reason the PlayStation 3 was slow out of the gate and lost the previous generation to the Xbox 360, and it was another big reason the $499.99 Xbox One was slow out of the gate and has so far lost this generation (in sales, anyway) to the PS4.
Currently, the most expensive base configuration of the PlayStation 4, a PS4 Pro with a 1 TB hard drive, is $399, the same as its launch price in 2016. Also, as if on cue, Microsoft yesterday announced the pricing and launch date for its all new discless Xbox One S. That’s May 7, and $249.99, and it comes with three games.

Also kinda excited that 4k will be mainstream now
4K adoption is still pretty slow where its an option (on PC) and for good reason. 1440p is the most popular resolution after 1080p. I'll gladly ditch 4K for lower or ultrawide variants with higher frame rates.

Currently AMD's flagship GPU i.e. Radeon VII, which costs $700, falls short of the RTX 2080 for 4K60 "ultra". Can Navi achieve 4K30 gaming with next-gen visual feature set or Ultra equivalent of today in a $400 console?
