25 Pictures Will Make You Re-Evaluate Your Entire Existence

The universe, man… THE UNIVERSE.
1. This is the Earth! This is where you live.

2. And this is where you live in your neighborhood, the solar system.

3. Here’s the distance, to scale, between the Earth and the moon. Doesn’t look too far, does it?

4. THINK AGAIN. Inside that distance you can fit every planet in our solar system, nice and neatly.

5. But let’s talk about planets. That little green smudge is North America on Jupiter.

6. And here’s the size of Earth (well, six Earths) compared with Saturn:

7. And just for good measure, here’s what Saturn’s rings would look like if they were around Earth:

8. This right here is a comet. We just landed a probe on one of those bad boys. Here’s what one looks like compared with Los Angeles:

9. But that’s nothing compared to our sun. Just remember:

10. Here’s you from the moon:

11. Here’s you from Mars:

12. Here’s you from just behind Saturn’s rings:

13. And here’s you from just beyond Neptune, 4 billion miles away.

To paraphrase Carl Sagan, everyone and everything you have ever known exists on that little speck.
14. Let’s step back a bit. Here’s the size of Earth compared with the size of our sun. Terrifying, right?

The sun doesn’t even fit in the image.
15. And here’s that same sun from the surface of Mars:

16. But that’s nothing. Again, as Carl once mused, there are more stars in space than there are grains of sand on every beach on Earth:

17. Which means that there are ones much, much bigger than little wimpy sun. Just look at how tiny and insignificant our sun is:

18. But none of those compares to the size of a galaxy. In fact, if you shrank the sun down to the size of a white blood cell and shrunk the Milky Way galaxy down using the same scale, the Milky Way would be the size of the United States:

19. That’s because the Milky Way galaxy is huge. This is where you live inside there:

20. But this is all you ever see:

(That’s not a picture of the Milky Way, but you get the idea.)
21. But even our galaxy is a little runt compared with some others. Here’s the Milky Way compared to IC 1011, 350 million light years away from Earth:

22. But let’s think bigger. In JUST this picture taken by the Hubble telescope, there are billions and billions of galaxies, each containing billions and billions of stars, each with their own planets.

23. Here’s one of the galaxies pictured, UDF 423. This galaxy is 10 BILLION light years away. When you look at this picture, you are looking billions of years into the past.

Some of the other galaxies are thought to have formed only a few hundred million years AFTER the Big Bang.
24. And just keep this in mind — that’s a picture of a very small, small part of the universe. It’s just an insignificant fraction of the night sky.

25. And, you know, it’s pretty safe to assume that there are some black holes out there. Here’s the size of a black hole compared with Earth’s orbit, just to terrify you:

Oh man.

Great stuff. Have seen most of these pics as I'm into this stuff.

Scale of the universe, the feeling of helplessness and loneliness, the fear of its incomprehensible size. Mind blowing stuff that mesmerizes me.

There are several videos also telling the same stuff but i posted this as it looks better on a forum :p

I really became interested in this stuff when i started watching sci fi series like Battlestar galacticca, babylon5, andromeda, firely, farscape, dr who and my personal favorite stargate etc. Those documentry series like like "the universe", "how the universe works", "cosmos: a space time odyssey" are really interesting. I am an engineer but now if i "did it all again" then i would have been a physicist for sure.

As Sagan said, "Pale blue dot" indeed.

Has anyone read "Brief history of time" or "the first 3 minutes"?

Absolutely breathtaking. That's why Astronomy and Medical sciences are mentioned in Quran. If we pay attention to our surroundings especially astronomy any sane person will feel, how small we are and how arrogant we try to be ;s

I have an absolute love for space. Everytime I look up into the night sky (even with all the effin pollution) - it just reminds me how insignificant we are.

Just imagine, we sit here guarding our houses and land thinking we own so much. That piece of land we own is just one little spec in this vast country, which itself is only a small portion of this huge planet earth. Most of us have not even been around the earth and just thinking of the grand scale of our mountains and the depths of our oceans or vastness of the empty sky brings shiver down the spine. Yet all of that is insignificant when compared to the grand scale of the universe.

We as humans, we have pride, we are proud of our little land, we fight and kill for it. We make enemies and start wars, people spend life time in courts trying to gain a small portion of land in this little planet.

So I ask everyone - what are we so proud of? Look up into the sky, that little dot we see is billions of time bigger than us, and yet its only one small dot. Imagine what we are when it comes to the grand scale of the universe, imagine what we are when it comes to Allah (swt). It's frighting to say the least, and yet he is most forgiving and merciful. Who are we to hate and not forgive others when He, who is bigger than the grand scale of the universe, who is the creator of all of this can forgive...

I could go on forever - how it baffles one mind thinking about universe. It's sad that this is not taught in schools here. Folks in PK are oblivious to anything further than the moon. We should spread the knowledge of the universe to everyone. Cosmos should run on our TV instead of idiotic dramas - heck even Carl Sagan's Cosmos is still informative in this day and age.

@HAMMER of THOR - you should download a software called SpaceEngine - it will let you explore the universe. They have a directory of most discovered stars, solar systems, galaxies, etc. and the rest is computer generated by logic. You can go from galaxies to the smallest asteroid. It's probably the best space simulator (if not only) out there.

and yet we humans cannot get of the mentality 'meri qoum teri se behter ha' etc
we are nothing as compared to the scale of the universe yet our 'mein' ni khatam hoti

a brilliant post OP

I yearn for the day when people on earth will start to think of their-selves as humans rather than what we think of ourselves today.

The observable universe is 93 billion light years.

Just sit back and let that sink in. Somehow makes me think all these earthly problems are moot. We fight with each other over religions that came what.. 2000 or less years ago? The universe has existed for around 14 billion years. That's the kind of number the average person can't even comprehend.

Did y'all see the new Assassin's Creed trailer? They finally made a AC set in Japan & then they put a negro as the male protagonist. Ubisoft is taking cues from Disney, and it isn't gonna end well for them, just like Disney. Go woke, go broke!

if we are moving towards more and more popular trash across platforms that make billions for companies, I'm happy with all the barriers and exclusivity because at least that brings some pressure to create good stuff.
