Hey guys. So the laptop in my signature (the specs on the rigth I believe) is almost 5 years old. Following are the specs:

  • 2nd Gen i5
  • Radeon 6770
  • 1TB HDD
  • 8GB RAM

Now.. my desktop has a 120GB SSD which is full. I was thinking I should move that to my laptop, replace the laptop's DVDRW with the 1TB HDD (in a custom bay) and order a Samsung EVO 850 500GB for my PC.

Question is, will installing an SSD in the laptop help?

It's issues:

  • Gives a system fan 90b error on almost every startup (any suggestions in this regard?)
  • Windows boots at an OK speed
  • After boot, opening Android studio or dropbox takes like 2-3 minutes minimum - often more

Give me some suggestions. Should I do the above, or sell this laptop and get a new one?

Yes, It will change your life. trust me. Go for it.

I bought a new laptop and immediately changed the 500GB HDD to 120 GB SSD. you should buy an SSD and you will be at peace. In future if you change your laptop, you can still use your SSD with your new laptop.

Ok I'll definitely consider it.

Also do you have any idea what do about the fan error? :D
No Idea. For this you should go to some shop and get it checked. Considering your laptop fan is not working ?

Yes, it will. You wont beleive how much just a 16gb ssd cache drive gives improvement over normal hdd, let alone a standalone 128gb. Fan can be replaced easily for around 500rs.

In modern world, there is very negligible performance gain when upgrading CPU and RAM etc. but what the difference of night and day is with upgrading from HDD to SSD. However I would suggest going with 250GB, you can always reuse such items. Very productive and good investment.

It is working, definitely. I can feel some air being blown out the top-left corner. None from the back side though. The issue is I don't think it revs up with the temp. Constantly running in a low-RPM state.

I know but.. I'm already buying a 500gig one for my desktop. Unless I can find a used one for cheap, I'll stick with the 120gb for the laptop for now.

Anyway, thanks for the tips guys. Will get the fan checked today hopefully, and order the SSD.

Well I did it myself, ordered replacement fan from aliexpress. I think most repair shops would offer such services, can't pinpoint anyone though.

to add to this..I am in exactly the same boat.

I have a Lenovo Y50 UHD ..Its has a core i7-4720HQ, gtx 960m, 8gb...now the HDD is 1TB but it doesnt have a SSD..and it honestly sometimes feels to me that the HDD is causing a massive bottleneck, since the specs should mean that the laptop is blazing, but windows loadup, windows overall performance and data transfers arent what I expect from this machine.

Yours is a much better machine. Add the SSD.. Move the HDD to the DVD bay (using that thingy from AliExpress).

Funny you'd mention this today haha. I went to media international to get my fan checked. They had these 3rd gen laptops with 250gb mSATA ssds. Snappy machines. Refurbished obviously. His asking price was upper 20s.

I made up my mind. Selling this. Getting a newer machine. I'll check out this place you mentioned.

Even 3rd Gen laptop with SSD blows 4th and 5th generation laptops without SSD. SSD is best thing you can do to any laptop today. If you do any kind of development SSD is must.

Have you had it serviced in the last year or so?? If not, then there is a chance that will do wonders too... Just make sure to be there when they are servicing.. & get an SSD.
