shrinking new laptop hdd

salam. i bought a new laptop yesterdsay it came with 1tb hdd and all the space is used by C drive. i want to give C drive 50GB and rest for D drive, i tried the usual metho of shrinking the drive but its not going beyond 450GB, i tried a software dnt remember its name but it started to give errors on startups..so now i was thinking to use windows xp cd and format the whole hdd,which will delete the recovery partition too, but i dont need it since windows 10 is free. so i want to know is this xp method a good idea or bad idea? any other easy way of doing it?

Walikum Salaam.

Windows 10 is not free if you don't upgrade it first.

Upgrade to Windows 10 via the official tool from MS and select the iso download method, once you are done upgrading Windows will be activated. Then just do a clean install, Windows will activate itself. Skip where it asks for a key.

i upgraded windows 8.1 to windows 10 home and its activated now so i assume its all good now? and no yaar i dont want to install windows xp i just need its setup and format the hdd completly and make 2 new drives and then ill install winodws 10, and at present its win 10 home, can i install pro version and activate it normally?
and laptop its dell inspiron 15 5548, 5th gen i5, 1TB, 8Gb ram, touchscreen etc etc

No, to stay genuine you have to clean install Windows 10 Home, the exact edition you were upgraded too. If you want to go with Pro, you can activate that using the KMS tools available online.

Great so ill get xp setup to format my hdd and then use win10 home usb to clean install win10.
Btw anybproblems or regret i might have after formatting the whole hdd?it will delete recovery partitions.which im not sjre i need it or not

Wait, can't you do the format thing using the Windows 10 setup? Just delete all the partitions make one for the Windows, and make the rest when you are done installing Windows.

Also you can try through command prompt using the diskpart commands and all.

That is just for recovery AFAIK, not sure if you will need it in the future.

You can install win 10 home with RTM ISO available on internet, no need to download from microsoft slow servers.

And try to shrink C drive with this software if you have not already, EaseUS Partiton Master.
