should i upgrade??? for maya

should i upgrade to gtx 470 from 460 atm + 2gb or 4gb ram??

My cousin is starting a course was something like maya or cs4 dont know what bla bla. i am joining him he said that i must have to upgrade my pc for it.

another thing.. my gpu bottle necks with my low resolution 19" lcd 1440 x 900 so, 470 will bottle neck more??

This hardware rush is a fad. If you're serious about your profession and learning; 2GB RAM and GTX 260 is more than enough.

Atleast you should buy more ram, these programs love Ram More Ram smooth they will perform.

If you use 64 bit Windows then get as much ram as you can, if 32 bit Windows then 3 GB is enough.
just overclock your Calibre around 900 MHz core, i will catch GTX470 with lower temps and power consumption, then why you forgot GTX 560 Ti and GTX 570? price of both GPUs similar to GTX470/480

@OP, You're going to "begin" learning the tools. Most of the people talking about hardware and 3D technologies are all "talk". They don't have any hands on experience with tools. I used to render huge scenes in 3DsMax with 2GB of HyperX, and EVGA GTX 260 SuperClocked for 2 years. All programs like Maya, 3dsMax and SoftImage etc, worked flawlessly.

Your monitor is enough as well, and the card is way better than what you may need as a beginner. The RAM is something you may want to upgrade depending on your usage.

I have 8600GT with 2GB Ram and latest version of Maya ran fine. May be your cousin is making an excuse to avoid you. Sorry my personal opinion because thats what I would do.

thanks for your help guys but i met a student who is doing cs4 he told me to buy laptop and said i3 is enough for me .. what you guys say now? what would be better for me??
i am thinking to downgrade my symtem add some cash and buy a core 2duo lappy as crazy pathan said it ran fine on 8800 so it may perform well too on this.

By CS4 if you mean Adobe Creative Suite 4 which you might need to create textures in Photoshop for models in Maya, then I am pretty sure you will do JUST fine but I wouldn't recommend a lower end Laptop without a good GPU and enough RAM if you are gonna go for 3D.

Just a tip, a little extra RAM won't hurt your system performance.

I think your cousin has gone bonkers. He is just making you waste your money. The specs you have are outstanding for CS4 and Maya.

normal 8500GT and 2gb ram is enough to run smooth Maya and 3DS Studio Max. if you are into rendering then quadro series will do better.
