SNR
SNR means Signal to Noise Ratio. Simply put divide the Signal value by Noise Value and you get SNR. You need high SNR for a stable connection. In general, a higher signal to noise ratio will result in less errors.

* 6bB. or below = Bad and will experience no line synchronisation and frequent disconnections
* 7dB-10dB. = Fair but does not leave much room for variances in conditions.
* 11dB-20dB. = Good with little or no disconnection problems
* 20dB-28dB. = Excellent
* 29dB. or above = Outstanding

Note that most modems display value as SNR Margin and not pure SNR.

SNR Margin
You can think of SNR margin as the measure of quality of the service; it defines the ability of the service to work error free during noise bursts.

This is a measure of the difference between your current SNR and the SNR that is required to keep a reliable service at your connection speed. If your SNR is very close to the minimum required SNR, you are more likely to suffer intermittent connection faults, or slowdowns. You need a high margin to ensure that bursts of interference don't cause constant disconnections.

With traditional broadband, the higher the SNR Margin, the better. With MaxDSL the faster speeds are only available as a trade-off with what your line can reliably support. The Target SNR Margin is about 6dB. If your broadband is provided through an LLU (Local Loop Unbundled) network, this target SNR Margin may be as high as 12dB.

Line Attenuation
In gerneral, attenuation is the loss of signal over distance. Unfortunately, dB loss is not just dependent on distance. It also depends on cable type and gauge (which can differ over the length of the cable), the number and location other connection points on the cable.

* 20bB. and below = Outstanding
* 20dB-30dB. = Excellent
* 30dB-40dB. = Very Good
* 40dB-50dB. = Good
* 50dB-60dB. = Poor and may experience connectivity issues
* 60dB. and above = Bad and will experience connectivity issues

Line attenuation also affects your speed.

* 75 dB+: Out of range for broadband
* 60-75 dB: max speed up to 512kbps
* 43-60dB: max speed up to 1Mbps
* 0-42dB: speed up to 2Mbps+

need some advice; I DC'ed ptcl interet in July but theyre still sending bills with charges since last two months. I gave the helpline guy an earful last month and told his supervisor to call me personally when broadband is switched off on my connection. He called and confirmed nad that was that. This month Ive again gotten a full fledged bill, useless to call the help line now, was wondering if anyone can offer any ideas? Im gonna visit the exchange in a day.

Internet working like shit again! :mad:

Called 1218 for complaint. The guy confirmed the internet speed and modem details.

Registered a complaint with complain number 78 since my Speedtest gave the following result on my 4MB Line:

Funny thing - the PTCL personal stated that he is NOT aware of such problems that customers are facing (i.e. shitty internet speed during afternoon & evenings) nor is he aware of any maintenance being done.

I made it very clear to him that this is something that a lot of users are facing and I'm stumped to hear that he isnt even aware of it. He said he will have someone come over to have a look at it. I made sure that it is stated on the complaint that only in the evenings this problem occurs so i dont wont some fucker coming in the morning and saying its ok!

Lets see... its very annoying that PTCL has no answer to why this is happening... heck they act like they dont even know its happening! :mad: cock munchers!

I have faced no speed issues or disconnection issues over the last 2-3 days.

It has also not rained in the last 2 days.

Coincidence?

After 3-4 days of rock solid connectivity, I have noticed that my SNR has started to fluctuate again, even though, at least as of yet, I am not getting disconnected every 2 minutes.

Has it rained in some parts of Lahore?

Im considering switching to a GPON connection for my internet service. I currently am at an 8mbps package on a fiber optic line. Download speeds I currently get are satisfactory, but It's mainly for hoping to get better latency. But does anyone have any experience with their GPON service and whether it's worth it? Does the latency even improve at all?

4mb internet connection and that 250 package which have unlimited call used to be for approx 2600 (including All taxes)

and now since they have applied the tax on DSL
its now 3.07k

and now... to PTCL...

WTF is this :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

You won't get better latency since the public IP's have variable routing from region to region. Your best bet is to get a static IP in the 203.135.x.x prefix, that has by far the best routing everywhere.

SNR fluctuation and disconnections from 5PM to 8PM. Connection has stabilized, but this is really getting on my tits. I don't get why it happened and that pisses me off more than anything else.
