Production delays can strike any movie at any time, and for countless reasons. Sometimes, movies are delayed for financial purposes, like when studios go into the tank for more funds or look for cost savings in their existing budgets. Other times, delays occur in the face of more heartbreaking circumstances, such as the loss of a cast member or an utterly shocking national tragedy. And, of course, every now and again someone gets injured during shooting. Welcome to the biz; nobody said making movies was easy.

But every now and again a production pumps the brakes over positive turns of events, so chalk this up as a bit of good news/bad news: production on Resident Evil 6, Paul W.S. Anderson’s long brewing capstone entry to the most veteran video game adaptation franchise in film history, will be delayed until the ultra packed summer of 2015. But it’s not because anybody has been hurt, or because the money has run out, or because horrific world events dictate that any forward momentum on the project would be in poor taste.

Instead, Resident Evil 6 is being held off because Anderson and his wife, star and career badass Milla Jovovich, are expecting their second child. That seems like a much more positive reason for a movie to be put a movie on hold. Jovovich made the announcement herself via her Facebook account earlier today; apparently, she’d originally intended on posting about flying to Cape Town to begin filming, but having run into a slight case of pregnancy, she and Anderson have chosen to focus on family first instead of globe trotting zombie mayhem.

So Resident Evil enthusiasts will have to wait just a little bit longer to watch the continued adventures of Jovovich’s Alice in a world overrun by T Virus monstrosities. Their decision seems like a no brainer (terrible pun partly intended), but read on to hear it from Jovovich herself:

So after a lot of discussion, we thought it would be in everyone’s best interest to wait till the baby is born before we set out to try and tackle an RE movie. Between the stunt work and what will become my ever-expanding belly, we didn’t think pregnancy and zombie killing are the best combo! Lol! I imagine the only thing I’ll be killing in the near future is an endless supply of cupcakes. Yikes…

Sound logic. There’s more, too, including “thank yous” to the crew in South Africa that’s already put in work to get Resident Evil 6 rolling and, of course, to her fans for being patient and understanding. (Not that anyone should reasonably hold it against her for prioritizing motherhood over filmmaking.) The end result, though, is that the film is on ice for up to a year; for everyone who just wants the series to die, this is probably a pretty good turn of events, but it just delays the inevitable.

In the interest of fairness, Resident Evil 6‘s shooting schedule has been totally wobbly from the word go; Anderson initially planned a rough starting time of fall 2013 for production, which would have given him all the time necessary to get the film in the can for its original projected September 12th, 2014 release. However, a handful of roadblocks, including a glacial screenwriting phase and post production travails on Pompeii, saw him fall on the back foot just a few months ago. So Anderson’s professional developments from this past year suggest that Resident Evil 6 wouldn’t be making its premiere date, pregnancy or no.
With all of that said, we here at Screen Rant would like to wish Jovovich and Anderson all the best with the latest addition to their family.

We’ll keep you informed on Resident Evil 6‘s progress as more info comes in.

[h=1]‘Resident Evil 6′: Milla Jovovich Reaffirms Summer 2015 Filming Start Date[/h]

Resident Evil movie franchise screenwriter Paul W.S. Anderson – who’s also helmed most of the films in the sci-fi/horror video game-inspired series – had once planned to begin shooting his sixth and final installment (working title: Resident Evil: The Final Chapter) in 2013, then changed that to 2014. However, production got put on hold a third time, understandably, after Anderson’s wife and his Resident Evil movie franchise star, Milla Jovovich, became pregnant.

Jovovich broke the news to fans last year, while also announcing that principal photography on The Final Chapter would instead be getting underway in Summer 2015… most likely, anyway. However, she’s now provided a fresh update on her own personal health, while re-affirming that things are proceeding as previously expected on the next Resident Evil movie.

Here’s the relevant excerpt from Jovovich’s post to her official Facebook page:

I’m really proud of myself for not gaining the same amount of weight that I did with our first child (75 lbs.) because I have to be ready to start filming “Resident Evil- The Final Chapter” in August of this year and I will also be nursing an infant simultaneously (get ready wardrobe department for Alice’s new “easy mama access” costume;)) so I don’t want to be on any extreme diets to get ready to go back to “action hero” mode!

No additional cast and/or plot details have been reported for The Final Chapter, other than it will finish the story of Jovovich’s Alice. Anderson, back when he was at 2012′s San Diego Comic-Con to promote Resident Evil: Retribution, said that Retribution is “the beginning of the end” to the tale he wants to tell in the Resident Evil universe. Even by then, though, Jovovich was acknowledging that the Resident Evil movie brand will live on (e.g. a reboot), after she and Anderson have stepped away from it.

The Final Chapter, assuming it’s not pushed back again, could arrive by September in 2016, as did the last two installments (Afterlife and Retribution) did in 2010 and 2012, respectively.

When it does, most of the fans who have stuck it out with Anderson and his pop action movie take on the Resident Evil property over the years (through the good and bad alike) will, no doubt, turn out for this sixth movie… if only to see how this whole thing gets wrapped up.

We’ll bring you more information on Resident Evil 6 (a.k.a. Resident Evil: The Final Chapter) when we have it.

[h=1]‘Resident Evil 6′ To Begin Filming Soon For Fall 2016 Release[/h]

Paul W.S. Anderson has written all five Resident Evil movies to date (and directed three of them), but he is planning to finish his run on the video game movie series with the upcoming sixth installment. Tentatively titled Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, the movie will once again star Milla Jovovich as creature-fighter Alice, who must prevent the Red Queen (the supercomputer that now controls all T-virus monsters) from wiping out humanity – and thus stop the evil Umbrella Corporation, once and for all.
The fifth Resident Evil film, Resident Evil: Retribution, ended on a cliffhanger that set up the plot for The Final Chapter, but the latter ended up being delayed from its original September 2014 release date; first, because Anderson took longer to write the script than originally expected, then again when Jovovich became pregnant. However, as promised by Jovovich in her last major update on the film’s progress, it appears production on The Final Chapter will begin at last before Summer 2015 draws to a close.

Jovovich has long kept fans of the Resident Evil movies up to speed on the franchise’s developments via her social media channels, and for her latest update she revealed herself getting a face cast for The Final Chapter (before filming starts in South Africa, with Anderson calling the shots once again). Check out the photo from Jovovich’s Instagram account, below:

The last four Resident Evil movies have opened in theaters in September and The Final Chapter isn’t expected to break from that tradition. After all, these Anderson-led video game adaptations have never amassed a strong enough following to compete with the usual summer blockbusters, but have found their niche in the ‘tentpole off-season’. The Final Chapter should finish the series on a solid note at the box office (since fans will want to see how Anderson ends Alice’s story), if it snags the September 2nd, 2016 release date that’s rumored. This would also give it room to breathe after films like Suicide Squad hit the theater scene, too.
Resident Evil: Retribution may have been guilty of overcomplicating the mythology laid out in previous installments (among other things), but The Final Chapter has a pretty straight-forward task: deliver a satisfying final boss climax for this video game-based movie franchise. All things considered, Anderson should be able to clear that (not exactly high) bar and craft a fairly shiny, action-packed conclusion that pleases this series’ fans. If you’re not a fan of these movies, well, don’t worry, the end is near…
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is expected to reach theaters in September 2016. We’ll let you know if that changes.

[h=1]‘Resident Evil': Ali Larter Returning For ‘The Final Chapter’[/h]

Video game adaptations have a poor track record of success at the box office overall, but the Resident Evil franchise has continued to buck that trend. In fact, the first five movie installments account for half of the top 10 highest-grossing video game films worldwide.
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (which looks to arrive by Fall 2016) faces the dual challenges of ending the series on a strong note and wrapping up the ongoing story in a way that will satisfy fans that have stuck with the films since the first installment hit theaters in 2002. Paul W.S. Anderson – who has written the whole series and directed the first, fourth and fifth films – will assume the director’s chair once again, with franchise star Milla Jovovich back as Alice.

Deadline is reporting that Ali Larter – who last appeared as Claire Redfield in the 2010 release Resident Evil: Afterlife – will return for what is reportedly planned to be the last film in the franchise. Resident Evil: The Final Chapter will center on humanity’s last stand against the Red Queen, resolving the cliffhanger set up in the previous installment, Resident Evil: Retribution. Filming begins in September, with Jovovich herself recently confirming that pre-production has begun.
Larter, outside the Resident Evil movies, is perhaps best known for her dual roles of Niki Sanders and Tracy Strauss on the NBC hit Heroes, though she is not returning for the series’ upcoming revival, Heroes Reborn. More recently, she has been co-starring alongside Sean Bean on the TNT drama series Legends, which starts season 2 in September.

Bingbing Li is expected to reprise as Ada Wong in The Final Chapter, while she and Larter ought to end up being joined by a number of other existing franchise players – including, one presumes, Wentworth Miller (seen recently on The Flash) as Chris Redfield. We anticipate further news concerning which still-living characters from Resident Evil movies past are coming back for the sixth (and the climactic) film installment, ahead of Anderson starting principal photography on the project.
The Resident Evil films have, in truth, never been critical darlings, under Anderson’s watch (case in point, read our Resident Evil: Retribution review). Regardless, this franchise has more than it fair share of fans – who enjoy its mindless popcorn entertainment value – and they will no doubt ready for The Final Chapter, in the hope that Anderson, Jovovich, and their collaborators (fingers crossed) end their run on the Resident Evil series with a bang.
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is currently expected to reach theaters in September 2016. We’ll let you know when the film gains an official theatrical release date.

[h=1]‘Resident Evil': Ali Larter Talks ‘The Final Chapter’ & Female Action Movies[/h]

Writer/director Paul W.S. Anderson and star Milla Jovovich (who’re also married in real life) will finish their time working on the Resident Evil franchise in early 2017, which is when Resident Evil 6 a.k.a. The Final Chapter is set to open in theaters. Principal photography on the project starts in South Africa in September 2015, with Jovovich’s former costar Ali Larter – who debuted as zombie outbreak survivor Claire Redfield in Resident Evil: Extinction back in 2007 – confirmed to return for this new installment.
Resident Evil 6 will follow through on the cliffhanger ending from Resident Evil: Retribution, as Alice (having regained her super-human abilities), Claire, and their allies stage their final stand against the Red Queen in order to save humanity from extinction. Larter has confirmed that this film will indeed be the last of Anderson’s Resident Evil films – marking the end of an impressive fifteen-year run, since the first Resident Evil opened in theaters in 2002.

Larter was asked by IGN if Resident Evil 6 will, in fact, be ‘The Final Chapter’, to which she responded “I know it is.” She also expressed her gratitude for being part of the series, as well as her admiration for Resident Evil as the rare action franchise driven by (multiple) female characters:
“… I love that it’s not seven men and one woman. I mean, these are two women [Alice and Claire], and they’re not competing with each other. You know, there are such easy clichés these two could fall into, but this is definitely a female power movie… It’s baffling [female action movies aren’t more popular], but I do believe it’s changing. I mean, look at things like Lucy and other things. I do believe it’s happening.”
Anderson’s Resident Evil films have long been criticized for being stylish yet vapid action movies (based on a video game franchise that’s far more rooted in the horror genre), but one of their strong points is their portrayal of female characters in ways that are not so stereotypical for the action genre (as noted by Larter). The only similar film property that’s achieved near as much longevity is fellow Sony Pictures franchise Underworld – long headlined by Kate Beckinsale – which has a fifth installment arriving in late 2016. So, on those grounds alone, Anderson and his cast’s run on Resident Evil is to be commended.

Larter, for her part, also promised that The Final Chapter will provide a satisfying conclusion for fans of Anderson’s Resident Evil films:
“We are not allowed to say one thing. I am held to secrecy, but what I can tell you is that the script is amazing. They’re really wrapping up the whole series, so that just makes it a little more poignant. To be able to come back and reprise my role as Claire and my relationship with Alice, with Umbrella Corp. — you know, I’m excited to get back in it. I think the fans are just going to be beyond excited.”
Resident Evil 6 will tie up both Alice and Claire’s overarching story threads from Resident Evil films past and should do likewise for other yet-to-be-confirmed returning characters; that includes Ada Wong (Li Bingbing), Leon S. Kennedy (Johann Urb), and presumably Wentworth Miller as Chris Redfield, Claire’s older brother. If nothing else, at least fans will get a definite answer, regarding what was going on with the Redfields during the events of the fifth installment, Resident Evil: Retribution (since neither Claire nor Chris were featured in that movie) and how that affects Claire’s relationship with Alice, in the face of the Red Queen apocalypse.
As for the future: it remains to be seen if the Resident Evil movie property gets rebooted after The Finale Chapter, but as a video game film adaptations renaissance might be upon us, that increases the probability of life after Anderson and Jovovich for the Resident Evil cinematic franchise.
Resident Evil 6/Resident Evil: The Final Chapter opens in U.S. theaters on January 27th, 2017.

[h=1]Resident Evil 6 Cast Revealed: Albert Wesker Returning[/h]

Despite the ongoing stigma against Hollywood adaptations of hit video games, the Resident Evil series has happily proven itself to be an exception to that rule. Over the course of five films, star Milla Jovovich and filmmaker Paul W.S. Anderson – who has directed three entries in the series to date – have carved out a reliable fanbase that continues to come out to theaters to support each new release.
The sixth chapter – fittingly dubbed Resident Evil: The Final Chapter – aims to tie up all the franchise’s loose ends in one fell swoop. When we last left Alice (Jovovich), she was tasked to lead a last stand against the Red Queen, the powerful and villainous AI at the heart of the Umbrella Corporation, who is planning to wipe out all of humanity using bio-weapons.

Screen Gems has confirmed the supporting cast for the new film, and longtime fans should be pleased with the news. We’ve previously heard that Ali Larter — who previously played Claire Redfield in the third and fourth films — would reprise her role for the film, alongside Jovovich. However, now we know that Iain Glen, Shawn Roberts, Ruby Rose (Orange Is the New Black), Eoin Macken and William Levy will also be joining the film’s cast.
Shawn Roberts in Resident Evil: Afterlife

Of those names, only Iain Glen and Shawn Roberts are returning to the franchise. Glen – who has also appeared on Game of Thrones and Downton Abbey – played Dr. Sam Isaacs in both Resident Evil: Apocalypse and Resident Evil: Extinction. Meanwhile, Shawn Roberts took over the role of Albert Wesker from Jason O’Mara starting with Resident Evil: Afterlife. Considering the way the last film ended, it’s likely that his character in particular has an integral role to play in the series’ final entry.
No details just yet on what characters Rose, Macken and Levy will be taking on, but the film is only set to begin filming this month. There’s still plenty of time for news to leak about the new additions as well as for other returning faces to join in the final battle. Stay tuned for more details on writer/director Anderson’s film as its production continues.

[h=1]Resident Evil 6 Set Photos Highlight Cast Members & Costumes[/h]

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, the sixth installment in Paul W.S. Anderson’s film franchise adapted from the best-selling video game series, is about to begin filming, with a planned release date set for early 2017. The final go-round on the Resident Evil set will see mainstay lead Milla Jovovich reunited with Ali Larter. In addition, Alice and Claire Redfield will be joined by returning cast members Wentworth Miller, as Claire’s brother Chris and Iain Glen, as the insidious Dr. Isaacs. The film will also feature Shawn Roberts, Ruby Rose (the break-out star of Orange is the New Black season 3), Eoin Macken, William Levy, Fraser James, and Japanese model and celebrity personality, Rola.
As all of the pieces continue to fall into place, regarding Anderson’s final foray into the chronicles of the Umbrella Corporation, fans can now get a behind-the-scenes look at the film, courtesy of the stars’ Instagram accounts.

Reportedly, Anderson’s conclusion will return to the roots of the film series, with viewers picking up with Alice following the events of Resident Evil: Retribution, as she attempts to put an end to the Red Queen’s plans for eliminating all remaining human survivors. Production is getting underway in South Africa, and below you can view photos the cast members have posted online.

The official plot synopsis for the film reads as follows:
“Picking up immediately after the events in Resident Evil: Retribution, humanity is on its last legs after Alice is betrayed by Wesker in Washington D.C. As the only survivor of what was meant to be humanity’s final stand against the undead hordes, Alice must return to where the nightmare began, Raccoon City, where the Umbrella Corporation is gathering its forces for a final strike against the only remaining survivors of the apocalypse. In a race against time, Alice will join forces with old friends, and an unlikely ally, in an action packed battle with undead hordes and new mutant monsters. Between losing her superhuman abilities and Umbrella’s impending attack, this will be Alice’s most difficult adventure as she fights to save humanity, which is on the brink of oblivion.”
For fans who have followed Jovovich throughout the years in her battle against the evil Umbrella Corporation, there’s plenty to get excited about in these new photos. Featuring both new and old cast members alike, Anderson and crew have hopefully pulled together for a worthwhile Resident Evil swan song (and, at the very least, appear to have had a good time while doing so).
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter will see theatrical release in the U.S. on January 27th, 2017.
