Properly/Safely Dumping Old PC Hardware?

How exactly does one, in Pakistan, go about dumping old, broken PC hardware that doesn't work any more? I have a few broken CD-ROM drives, an amplifier and an old 478-socket motherboard that I'm not sure how I should dump, apart from throwing them away in the garbage. There have to be ways in which these can be recycled or a way where someone can salvage the working parts off these components right?

What have you guys done with your old and broken hardware over the years?

Karachi.
You should give them to dookan wala. They can unscrew the nuts and bolts of the HDD drives, can take out its chip for IDE slots etc...

managing e-waste is a huge problem at Pakistan as manufacturers don't take back the goods you no longer need, plus recycling of e waster services are virtually non-existent in our country.
Moreover import of these 'branded' old desktop systems which are dumped on containers in ships which come through the sea route is the 'best' way of getting rid of that e-waste by the developed countries of the world. If that's not possible then landfills are the only option left.
Invariably whatever can be salvaged by the shopkeepers or yourself would be nice and the rest would find its way to the same garbage dump where it d spread pollution and degrade the fragile environment.
