Almost 25 years ago, the original PlayStation was introduced to the world. Developed by Sony Computer Entertainment, it was the first home console in video game history to ship 100 million units worldwide, offering consumers a chance to play games with real-time 3D rendered graphics in their homes for the first time.

Today, we are excited to announce that we are bringing back the original PlayStation experience in a new miniaturized version – PlayStation Classic! The console will come pre-loaded with 20 classic titles, including fan-favorites such as Final Fantasy VII, Jumping Flash, Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3, and Wild Arms.

The mini console is approximately 45% smaller than the original PlayStation, and it emulates the original’s look and feel by featuring similar controllers and packaging. Long-time fans will appreciate the nostalgia that comes with rediscovering the games they know and love, while gamers who might be new to the platform can enjoy the groundbreaking PlayStation console experience that started it all. All of the pre-loaded games will be playable in their original format.

Available for pre-order at select retailers across the US and CAN, each unit will also come with an HDMI cable to connect to their TV, a USB cable, and two controllers for local multiplayer within compatible titles. PlayStation Classic will be available for $99.99 USD (MSRP) / $129.99 CAN (MSRP) on December 3, 2018 – a historic date for all of us at PlayStation.

[h=1]See how the PlayStation Classic measures up to the original PlayStation[/h]
[h=2]The mini PS1 makes a cameo at Tokyo Game Show[/h]

The PlayStation Classic, the miniaturized console modeled after the original PlayStation that Sony Interactive Entertainment announced earlier this week, made an appearance at Tokyo Game Show this week. While the console isn’t playable on the show floor, Sony has it set up (behind glass) next to an original PlayStation so attendees can get a sense of how wee the PS Classic is.
According to Sony’s official announcement, the PlayStation Classic is 45 percent smaller than the company’s original console. And like the mini consoles released by Nintendo, the console hardware itself is rivaled in size by the controllers (which look identical to the original PlayStation controllers).
Here’s a look at the PlayStation Classic next to its 1994 inspiration:

And here’s a look at the Japanese packaging for the PlayStation Classic:

The PlayStation Classic will be released worldwide on Dec. 3. It will come with 20 pre-loaded games, including Final Fantasy 7, Jumping Flash, R4: Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3 andWild Arms. The retro console will retail for $99.99 in the U.S., £89.99 in the U.K., €99.99 in Europe and 9,980 yen in Japan.

They may have aged well as 'games', but yes, early 3D graphics do not look flattering today at all.

Unless they're doing some kind of real-nice up-scaling and smoothing in this .. these mid to late 90's games will not look flattering at all on 4K TV's.

I didnt mean graphically. You see I'm pretty excited for the Sega genesis collection announced for the switch and those games graphically are even worse than PS1 games. But they have this retro appeal to it while i think PS1 games lack that appeal to me. Although i never bought one but the NES classic edition for me has far more appeal than the PS1 classic. I also feel the 100$ price tag is on the higher side.

[h=1]5 reasons why the PlayStation Classic is missing classic PlayStation games[/h]

[h=2]Pop music, HD remakes and the DualShock controller may have prevented your favorites from making the cut.[/h]

Today, Sony revealed the complete lineup of games included in the PlayStation Classic. The 20-game collection has been met with a lukewarm reception. Where Nintendo’s recent plug-and-play retro consoles include best sellers, critical darlings and cult classics, Sony’s hardware has many glaring software omissions.
Sony was perhaps doomed from the start in curating a perfect lineup for the PlayStation Classic. Let’s walk through a few potential reasons why the PlayStation Classic is missing so many of the console’s standout games.

[h=3]MUSIC LICENSING[/h]Many PlayStation developers took advantage of the console’s disc-based storage by including licensed popular music. The soundtracks to extreme sports series like Tony Hawk Pro Skater and JetMoto spanned a variety of record labels and required complex licensing agreements.
Music rights are generally limited to a certain period of time, impacting how games are sold years after release. For example, a 10th-anniversary patch for Grand Theft Auto 4 removed songs with expired license agreements. More recently, Alan Wake returned to digital storefronts, but only after Microsoft renegotiated its music licenses. The need to renegotiate music licenses (or remove songs and receive backlash from fans) may have prevented a number of music-heavy titles from making the cut.

SCEA / Captured by Launchbox Games Database[h=3]ADDITIONAL LICENSING ISSUES[/h]Madden ’98 is arguably the best 2D football game ever made. It was was produced by a third-party publisher with license agreements with both the NFL and its players. Gran Turismowas one of the highest-rated and best-selling games on the original PlayStation, launching one of Sony’s most well-known franchises. It also features 140 licensed vehicles and a handful of licensed music, including songs by The Chemical Brothers and Garbage.
The only thing more difficult than negotiating with record labels may be negotiating with international car manufacturers and the National Football League, both of which have only become more powerful in the past twenty years.

Capcom[h=3]REMAKES, RE-RELEASES AND REMASTERS[/h]Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, Castlevania: Symphony of the Nightand Resident Evil 2 seemed like obvious inclusions when the PlayStation Classic was announced last month, but none made the final cut. All four properties are owned by third-party publishers, and all four have fresh remasters, re-releases or remakes on store shelves or in development. The publishers may have opted to keep the classic games off the PlayStation Classic to avoid cannibalizing sales of their stand-alone, upgraded software.
The strange exception to the rule is Syphon Filter, a game that, following a trademark renewal, has been rumored to receive a remake. In hindsight, that renewal may have simply paved the way for its inclusion on the PlayStation Classic.

Light Weight/Square[h=2]MOST OF THE PLAYSTATION’S BEST GAMES WERE THIRD-PARTY[/h]Nintendo has made most of the best games on its consoles. In the present day, that can be frustrating for folks who want to play big, third-party releases. But for retro titles, owning the majority of a console’s best games is an advantage for Nintendo. The company doesn’t have to make as many agreements (and share as much revenue) with outside publishers to include beloved games on their retro plug-and-play systems.
Square Enix publishedFinal Fantasy Tactics, Bushido Blade and Vagrant Story. Acclaim published Mortal Kombat 2. Capcom published Mega Man Legacy and Dino Crisis. Eidos published Tomb Raider and Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. Some PlayStation-era publishers no longer exist, with the rights to their games distributed to new owners, further complicating licensing.
Yes, third-party publishers like Square Enix have other games included on the PlayStation Classic lineup, but each game requires its own licensing agreement. Sony is more likely to fight for the inclusion of Final Fantasy 7 than Square Enix’s lesser-known Parasite Eve.

[h=3]THE LACK OF DUALSHOCK[/h]Most omissions can be explained away by these business challenges. Then there’s Ape Escape. Though the Sony-published series has been neglected for the past decade, it had a strong run from the late ’90s into the early ’00s. Plus, it didn’t include lots of licensed music or star pro-athletes. However, in 1999, Ape Escape was the first game to require the DualShock (or Dual Analogue) controller — a PlayStation controller with twin joysticks. The PlayStation Classic ships with a recreation of the original hardware’s joystick-less controller, making it impossible to play Ape Escape or any other games requiring the more advanced controller.

Alan wake 2 is yet to recover it's development costs. Due to no physical release and no steam launch.
You reap what you sow. This is what happens when you take away choice from consumers. Even with 88% split going to developers, they can't recoup costs. Meanwhile, Helldivers 2 is a massive hit for Sony thanks in big part to Steam.
