A rather interesting article on the current state of the king of home consoles..

By Scott Hillis
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters Life!) - For all the buzz in the video game industry about high-definition and motion-sensing, you might never guess that one of the best-selling consoles uses decidedly old-school technology.
Sony Corp.'s (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research) 7-year-old PlayStation 2 is turning out to be an overachiever in the industry, quietly racking up impressive sales figures while sate-of-the-art machines from Sony, Microsoft Corp. (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) and Nintendo Co. Ltd. (7974.OS: Quote, Profile, Research) grab the headlines.
The PlayStation 2's comparatively low price of $130 and a games library of some 2,000 titles, including favorites such as "Metal Gear", "Final Fantasy" and "God of War," has given the sleek black machine a surprisingly long life.

Sony sold almost 300,000 PlayStation 2s in the United States in January, behind only Nintendo's Wii which boasts a motion-sensing controller and sold 436,000 units.
It beat Microsoft's Xbox 360 (294,000 units) as well as Sony's own PlayStation 3 (244,000 units), according to data from market research firm NPD.
"It shows that it's still a good value proposition with plenty of software," said PJ McNealy, an analyst with American Technology Research. "It's continued success has not only been a surprise to Sony but to other hardware makers as well."
Sales are so strong that Sony says it hasn't been able to keep up with demand. Continued...

"It's this industry's best-kept secret," Jack Tretton, chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment America, told Reuters in an interview. "And it's a multi-billion secret."
PS2 KEEPS UP WITH NEWCOMERS
Sony's continued support for its older technology contrasts with Microsoft, which stopped making the original Xbox and put all of its eggs into the next-gen basket with the 360. Nintendo is still cranking out its older console even as it rides high on the Wii's popularity.
"We are continuing to manufacture and sell Nintendo GameCube, which is an ideal entry-level value system and has a strong library of games," spokeswoman Beth Llewelyn said in an e-mail. "Nintendo GameCube still enjoys solid third-party support."

Microsoft was not immediately available for comment.
The PS2 has provided Sony with a steady stream of cash at a time when the Japanese electronics giant is losing money on the PlayStation 3, which is packed with costly features such as a high-definition Blu-Ray DVD player and hard-disk drive.
Sony's Tretton said the PS2 could stick around well beyond its planned 10-year life cycle, and the company expects to sell between 4 and 6 million units in the United States this year.
Demand for PlayStation 2 games is so strong that it still makes sense for Sony and other developers to make new games. Continued...

The PS2 boasted two of the top 10 selling titles in January, and next week Sony will launch "God of War II", a $50 action game that has already shipped 1.1 million copies.
"It far and away beats the other last-gen systems," said Jeremy Dunham, PlayStation editor at entertainment Web site IGN. "Brand loyalty is very important."
But could the PS2 be cannibalizing business that should be going to the PlayStation 3, Sony's flagship consumer device?
"Some who spends $129 on the PS2 isn't going to the store to drop $600 on the PS3," said McNealy of American Technology, adding: "It's a bit of a catch-22 for them right now. You want to give a reason for people to migrate to the PS3."

PlayStation 2: thriving or failing?

With all the brouhaha over the new generation of game systems, what's to become of the 100-million-unit-selling lord of the last generation -- the PlayStation 2? Well, it depends on who you ask.

On the one side is this Reuters report, which is positively bubbly about the system's enduring sales and impact in light of more powerful competitors. Indeed, the $130 system outsold the Xbox 360 and PS3 in January, and had two of the top ten selling games that month.

On the other side, you have this post on Dubious Quality which notes that the big-five publishers only have ten combined games announced for the system from June onward this year. Electronic Arts alone has ten games listed for the PlayStation 3 in the same period, despite the newer system's much smaller installed base.

So is the PS2's future rosy or ruinous? The determination really hinges on how many of those 100 million PS2 owners worldwide are still actively using their systems and how many have traded them in or boxed them up in the closet. The sales of God of War II, due to be released next week, will give a good indication of just how much oomph this aging system has left.

the failing part is a bit obscene as they only talk about developers who usually tend to make massively multiplatform games, where as there's still plenty of good games manhunt 2 etc they fail to mention.

PS2 isnt dead yet..its still going strong and will remain here for a couple of more years probably...i mean it was the only console everybody seemed to talk about and get...and the 100 million sales is a really great achievment for this console!

exactly, all that aside the most important thing is that its still getting good games, and with the introduction of a new ps2-level console i-e the wii expect more wii-ps2 games.

ps2 also remained the top selling home console this holiday season.

And The Console King Is? The PS2. Still.

This holiday season, it wasn't the PS3, the Xbox 360 or the Wii that came out on top. Oh no, it was the six-year-old PS2, which moved 1.4 million consoles. Wired's Chris Baker has a piece up over at Slate detailing why the PS2 still is numero uno. Quoting the article:
Luckily for Sony, their old console is so popular—more than 100 million have been sold worldwide—that they can offset some of the money they're hemorrhaging with the PS3. By continuing to manufacture and support the PS2, Sony is keeping its old customers happy and offering a cheaper alternative for people who can't afford a next-generation machine. Sony did the same thing last time around and managed to sell more than 20 million of the original PS1 consoles between 2000 and 2004—after the appearance of the PlayStation 2.
This March, God of War 2 will hit the PS2 and looks to be a big time hit. The game's director, Cory Barlog, tells Baker: "At this point, we know the hardware intimately, we know all the tricks." Elsewhere, Nintendo and Xbox cut life support for its last gen owners. Sure, charging ridiculous prices for new machines isn't smart. But is killing off your old console? Brian Ashcraft

another one of those articles that radd oh so hates :p

SAN FRANCISCO (CNNMoney.com) -- While media and gamer attention might be focused on the PlayStation 3, Sony (for now) has higher hopes for the nearly seven year old PlayStation 2 video game system.

Phil Harrison, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, told CNNMoney.com the company has raised its sales projections for the older console this year. He stopped short of giving specific revised target numbers. The company previously had forecast shipping 13 million PS2s this year.

The enthusiasm for the PS2 comes as Sony prepares to launch "God of War 2," the sequel to one of the system's most popular titles. Early reviews for the game make it the PS2's best-ranked title.

"The PS2 is currently over 115 million units worldwide and there are still some incredible software experiences for it," said Harrison. "There's still a lot of life left in the system."

While it's no longer as sexy as it used to be in consumer eyes, the PS2 is a profit machine for Sony (Charts). The system, which still sells for $129 in the U.S. and €149 in Europe, is not sold at a loss (unlike the PS3, on which Sony reportedly loses more than $200 per unit). Additionally, since "God of War 2" was developed in-house, the company will pocket a larger percentage of each game sale.

While the PS3, the Xbox 360 from Microsoft (Charts) and Nintendo's Wii got the most media attention during the 2006 holiday season, the PS2 proved to be the best-selling home console, perhaps because of its lower price, perhaps because of widespread availability.

While it wasn't too hard to find an Xbox 360, the PS3 and Wii were scarce. Harrison said that while the supply situation is slightly better, he doesn't expect widespread availability for some time.

"I don't think it will be a stable situation for a while now," he said.

Harrison was more upbeat on the potential of microtransactions, particularly on the company's recently announced "PlayStation Home" feature. In the 3D virtual community, players will be represented by fully customizable avatars. Dressing those characters in new clothes or furnishing their private 'apartments' with new features will require players to purchase the items.

"It's very important for the future of this industry that we embrace new [economic] models," he said. "The business model for micro-transactions is well established in other parts of the world. ... Not only will it be a significant revenue source [for Home], in some cases [with other games] it will be the only revenue source."

Prices for items in home have not yet been announced, but Harrison said they would likely vary "from a few cents to a few dollars and everything in between." Source: http://money.cnn.com/2007/03/08/tech...ison/index.htm

burnout dominator and my sig
who ever said burnout dominator is a bad game ? The reviews only cut out points because of lack of online and crash mode, the core game is still awesome based on the responses.

Oh, and i raise you 10 dollars on that 2008 comment.

ok, seriously half of that makes no sense at all, i think the exams are still on your head or something lol..

anyway, from a pure arcade 'racer' fan's POV burnout dominator is a good game seeing as how it doesnt reward for mindless crashes. Thats me, thats why i preferred NFS most wanted over Burnout revenge to begin wtih etc.

and even then if you think a game receiving a review score of 8 out of 10 is bad, then thats just your negative thinking.

And even then, there's still plenty of games coming my ps2's way reguardless.
